In a Faraway Place, One Night [1]

Our six main characters sitting together, sipping something – probably alcohol by the way Kelvin clinked cups with Zoe. Kelvin is sitting across from Zoe, Cairo across from Isla and Rocco across from Natalie. Kelvin is smiling at Zoe, but it almost looks like it’s for show. Cairo keeps peeking over at Natalie and Rocco is just enjoying the beach. He smiles over at Natalie. Zoe is slightly smiling, Isla is definitely drinking beer since she’s using a glass and she’s thoughtfully (sadly) looking at Cairo, Natalie is sitting almost with her back to Isla, drinking.

Natalie’s voiceover declares that today they are all spending a night together in a faraway place. Natalie glances over at Cairo. Cairo’s trying not to look at Natalie too much. And before the day ends, all six of them will kiss someone. That kiss will confirm the love of some people and cause pain to others. Things like this are a common occurrence on a summer trip. What trips are you going on? That kind of stuff never happened on my trips to the beach. And man! That’s a lot of bottles of alcohol!

[ In a Faraway Place, One Night ]

We jump back to Natalie in the wedding dress, running into Cairo on the street. This time the sad music plays, there’s no words from Cairo and Natalie immediately jumps into the car and drives off with Rocco. Mom watches her go, shocked. She asks Son-in-law Cairo, why Natalie is acting like that. She stops talking when she notices Isla. Isla asks if Mom is Natalie's mother. Mom says that she is and asks who Isla is. Cairo starts to try to come up with something. Isla interjects, introducing herself. She starts to say that she’s Cairo’s– when Mom interrupts and declares that she’ll say it. Isla could totally have just been about to say ‘friend.’

Mom declares that Isla was once engaged to Cairo. Mom is shocked. Cairo tries to get Mom to stop, by saying her name, but Mom keeps going, saying that she even chose a wedding dress for Isla. But unfortunately, it wasn't worn. Isla’s face reads uncomfortable and Cairo’s face says that he can’t believe that Mom is going to ruin everything with Mom.

Mom can’t believe what she’s hearing and asks Son-In-Law Gong if it’s true. He can’t meet her eyes. She asks again, still not meeting her eyes, has to say, “Yes.” Mom is stunned. Especially since Isla could be a model and Cairo’s standing right there with her and they came together. Mom’s practically smiling as she says that lots of people know about their relationship and Mom’s decided to tell her because hearing it from someone else might really upset Mom.

Mom turns to Mom and asks that she be understanding of Cairo’s flaw. Mom nods and declares that it's not like breaking up is a big deal in this century. It’s not like Cairo’s divorced or anything. Mom looks over at Cairo and Isla and says that what she can't understand is why they are still hanging around each other. Mom turns back to Mom and asks if Mom picked out the same dress that Isla was going to wear. Mom replies that it’s not the exact same dress, but, in any case, it seems she didn't think it through.

Mom sighs and declares that she understands now why her Natalie was so hesitant to get married. Mom shoot a hard look at Cairo before saying that Natalie must've been so sad, to have left while wearing her wedding dress. Mom sighs again. She tells Son-in-law Cairo– she’s looking at him and she stops. After a moment she changes that to Cairo and says that she will have to reconsider this marriage. Ouch! Demoted to Mr. Cairo. Mom looks over at him, almost with a smirk. Cairo blinks several times at Mom’s announcement. Mom frowns and pushes Cairo and Isla to walk away. Double ouch. Got shoved aside.

Isla says that this happened because of her. She apologizes *to C.Mom.* Even though she just screwed up Cairo’s engagement, but I guess she doesn’t think she needs to apologize, because it’s not a real engagement. In the grand scheme of things, this is the perfect opportunity for Cairo to declare that he will be single forever! Mom says that she’s the one who is sorry. Cairo looks at her with disbelief then sighs because he can’t believe how much things have gotten screwed up because of Mom again.

Cairo calls Natalie’s phone. She doesn’t answer it. She should just turn it off. Natalie isn’t crying anymore. She asks Rocco where they are going. But interestingly, not where he got the car, since I don’t think he has a car. Whose car is that? Rocco answers that they decided to run away, doesn’t she remember, to a faraway place.

Cairo is using the blue tooth in his car to try to call Natalie. After he gets Natalie’s answering message, he hangs up. After about 5 seconds he tries calling again. Isla looks sad. She says that she really wanted to help them this time. Cairo doesn’t say anything. Isla mentions how this is weird. It was always a marriage that was supposed to be broken, so what's the big deal? Cairo doesn’t say anything, doesn’t look at her, even though she’s looking at him. She tells him that he’s too serious.

Cairo arrives at Bon Café. Without looking at Isla, he apologizes because he can't drop her off. She should just take a taxi. How about that for a snub? Cairo gets out of the car and goes looking for Kelvin. Kelvin is sitting at one of the tables, playing with a model airplane. He really is a ten-year-old. Cairo asks where Natalie is. Kelvin has no idea why Cairo is asking him about that. Cairo is puzzled. He says that it was definitely Kelvin’s car. Oh! I forgot that Rocco was supposed to get it washed. Heh. That’s funny.

Kelvin’s not really paying attention to Cairo, but is spinning the propeller of his airplane. He says that Rocco took his car to get it washed. Cairo really starts frowning. Kelvin notices. Cairo leaves Bon Café. Kelvin runs after him, asking what’s going on. Cairo calls *Rocco* and asks where they are. Kelvin asks if Rocco kidnapped Natalie. Cairo yells at Kelvin to just be quiet!

Rocco is also using the Bluetooth in the car. Safe driving. He says that they are going to the beach. Cairo can’t believe he heard right. Rocco repeats himself. Kelvin grabs the phone out of Cairo’s hands and demands to know where Rocco is taking his car!? Cairo looks like he wants to punch Kelvin. He definitely wants to punch something. He wrestles the phone back and tells Rocco to give the phone to Natalie.

Her voice tired, Natalie declares that she’s there. Cairo starts to explain but Natalie tells him that she’s sorry, but for the time being, she shouldn’t look for her. Kelvin’s eavesdropping face is pretty funny. Natalie says that if she hears Mom calling her name one more time, she doesn't know what crazy thing she will end up doing. She’s scared of herself. Natalie hangs up the phone and Cairo looks totally freaked out.

Without a word to Kelvin, Cairo heads for his car. Kelvin hurries and jumps in the car, too. Cairo tells him to get out. Kelvin declares that he has to go find his car. But I can tell that he really wants to help Cairo out. Kelvin’s face says that it’s not up for discussion. As Cairo pulls on his seatbelt, Isla hops in the backseat. Cairo practically groans. Isla smiles and says that it’s great timing. She actually wanted to go to the beach too. She did ask him to go to the beach not two hours ago. Put upon Cairo can do nothing but accept that they’re coming.

Rocco is driving with the top down. Natalie’s veil blows off and it’s like a weight is lifted. She breaks into a smile and Rocco smiles widely back. He has such a great smile. They put their hands up to feel the air as it blows by.

Natalie is still in the wedding dress as she and Rocco sit on the beach. People are looking at them as they walk by. She chuckles and says that she looks like a bride who just ran away from the altar. Running away because of love. Looking at the ocean, Rocco asks what exactly was so hard. Natalie shrugs and says that it was a variety of things, including Mom. Natalie says that she doesn’t care what she has to go through, but Mom, who is very assertive, had to be so submissive in front of the in-laws, saying "Yes, Yes", "Ho, Ho." It was upsetting. Mom was looked down upon and didn't even know it was happening.

Rocco looks at her and clucks that again she’s letting herself get too involved, when it's just a fake marriage. Natalie can’t believe she’s doing it either. She says that she’s become too emotionally attached to this damn fake wedding scheme. They chuckle. She stands up and tells Rocco that they should go back now. She has to go return the dress. It’s probably very expensive. Rocco tells her not to worry about it. Cairo bro will pay for it. He has a lot of money.

Cairo announces that it’s *his* money, surprises the pair. Cairo wants to know why they are acting so nonchalantly about his money. Kelvin walks up and tells them that they sure did come to a faraway place in someone else's car. Rocco’s really surprised to be busted by Kelvin. Isla walks up and says that it's a perfect day for tanning.

Natalie sputters, wondering how they find them. Cairo clears his throat and she realizes that he tracked her down again! Cairo has to hold back a self-satisfied smile. Natalie grabs her phone and screams that she needs to completely get rid of her phone! She starts running down the beach, with Rocco running after her, telling her to calm down.

Then Natalie falls flat on her face. Cairo immediately goes running, since she could have gotten hurt. Kelvin follows after. Because of the dress, she can’t get up. Isla smiles with satisfaction at the lovely day as the guys yell to flip Natalie over.

Kelvin is reunited with his car. Rocco chuckles as Kelvin asks if the car missed daddy. Rocco laughs and says that he drove it gently. Kelvin answers by slapping him in the back of the head. Ouch. He jumped to put more force in it, too. Rocco grabs the back of his head and looks at Kelvin with surprise. Kelvin calls Rocco a brat and says that he clearly warned Rocco not to mess with Natalie. He goes to hit Rocco, but kicks Rocco in the shins instead. Rocco protests.

Kelvin asks if it’s just Rocco’s body that hurts! Imagine how hurt his best friend, Cairo, must have been when he had to chase down his run-away fiancée! Cairo is standing close by but says nothing. Kelvin makes like he’s going to hit or kick Rocco several times before he jumps up on his fender to really slap Rocco in the back of the head. Rocco protests that Kelvin doesn’t know what happened. Kelvin tries to kick him again.

Rocco runs over to Cairo, calling him ‘bro,’ and asking him to tell Kelvin. Cairo asks what he’s supposed to be telling. Rocco can’t believe that Cairo is really going to act like this. Cairo sucks some air through his teeth and declares that Rocco could use a beating. He waves at Rocco to follow him. Kelvin paws the ground while a bull sound is hear. Then he runs and takes a flying slap at Rocco. Rocco protests and Kelvin picks up a sign to inflict further damage. He misses. Rocco runs.

Natalie’s out of the dress and in some borrowed Aunty’s clothes. Inwardly she’s groaning at how terrible they are. Those are really lovely, floral, high rise pants there. Natalie thinks back to running into Cairo on the street. She goes and sits down outside. Cairo arrives and does a double take. Then, with a big smile to butter her up, he declares that wow, those baggy pants suit her perfectly. What any woman wants to hear. He smiles at her like there’s nothing wrong at all, in the least. She asks him why he same. Cairo asks why he wouldn't come. His future wife has run away with another man. Natalie doesn’t smile.

Natalie asks Cairo if he has any idea what she had to endure wearing that dress. He looks in the direction that she’s pointing, still acting like nothing’s at all wrong or different. Natalie shoves him and yells that even if this is a fake marriage… while she’s preparing for the marriage, he’s nowhere to be found. Cairo rubs his arm where she slapped him. She asks him if he knows how she felt standing in front of the two moms. He replies that Because he knows is why he followed her there. She doesn’t know what he means. Genuinely apologetic, Cairo apologizes. He says that she must have had a really hard time because of him. He’s sorry that he wasn’t there with her.

Natalie makes a face that says that she’s considering forgiving Cairo. He continues, saying that he’s also worried that Mom might be upset. Natalie wants to know why Mom would be upset. Isla answers – of course she does – saying that Mom found out about her and Cairo’s relationship. She’s carrying a couple of bags. She goes to stand in front of Natalie as she says that Mom is going to reconsider the marriage. Natalie sighs, frustrated. Isla says that she didn't intend it this way, but Natalie’s fake marriage has become a bit more risky because of her. Cairo looks at Natalie, hoping that she’s forgiven him.

Isla adds that she made such a problem so that Cairo came running after Natalie. She doesn’t add that Cairo is freaking out, not because his ruse might be blown, but because Natalie might leave. Natalie nods and says that of course he would. He’s sorry to her?! Cairo’s a little surprised that she’s mad again. She yells at him that he really came because he was worried that his plan to live unmarried forever might fail! Cairo waves his hands in protest that that just isn’t true, that she’s got it all wrong. Isla doesn’t help out here either. Cairo protests that it's not like that.

Isla suggests that they stop talking about such boring things when they’ve all come so far. Cairo looks over at Natalie, worried. Isla asks Natalie if she wants to join in sunbathing. Isla holds up the bags and says that she brought the things they need. Natalie basically says ‘whatever’ and says that she’s leaving, so the pair of them can bake or fry their bodies by themselves. She puts on her shoes and walks off. Cairo watches her go, uncomfortable because he’s never really had to grovel with her before. I don’t think he’s really ever had to grovel in any of his relationships. I can’t see a fight with Isla where there was groveling, because I don’t think he ever really connected with her like that.

Rocco arrives, rubbing his shoulder. Natalie tells him that they should go. Kelvin appears right after him and asks where they’re planning on going. Natalie makes a face at him. He makes a glaring face back. Cairo has followed her and asks if they even have a car to leave in. Natalie proudly says that she’ll take bus. Cairo asks about her money. She doesn’t have any, just her phone. Cairo laughs. Natalie looks over at Rocco and he doesn’t have any. How are you going to run off with a girl and not have any money? Kelvin smiles because Natalie is stuck. Isla also smiles. Natalie sighs.

Isla walks up to Natalie and suggests, that since they’ve already come to the seaside, they should play a little before they leave. She drags a protesting Natalie away. Cairo gives Rocco a glare before he follows them, which makes Rocco laugh. Kelvin makes the ‘I’m watching you’ sigh with his fingers and then drags his hand across his throat, like Rocco is dead. Rocco sighs.

Beach chairs with umbrellas. Isla’s laying back, basking in the sun. Natalie is sitting, annoyed. Isla tells her that she doesn't need to be so guarded. She adds that she’s on the same side as Natalie and Cairo. Natalie doesn’t buy it. After all, she wants to keep the secret Isla’s on the side of exposing the truth. Isla replies that she just needs one gift from Cairo. Really? It's a really small one, but Cairo’s being stubborn and won't give it to her. A baby is *not* a small gift. It’s one of the biggest gifts you can give.

Natalie sighs and turns to face Isla. She says that it must have been hard for Isla, too, marrying Cairo. Natalie says that she understand how she must have felt. It's enough to give up halfway through. Isla smiles and says, “Not really.” She doesn’t remember it being that hard. But since Natalie grew up in a different environment, it might be problematic. Wow, nice back-handed comment. Natalie groans, annoyed. She says that they’re supposed to be on the same side! Girls are supposed to become friends by badmouthing *other* people. Isla must not understand that feeling.

Cairo has sat down on the other side of Natalie. He asks who Natalie badmouthed. She makes a face and implies that it was him. He huffs in reply and takes off his shirt. Natalie is a little uncomfortable with shirtless-Cairo. Not that he notices since he’s flopped back to lay in his beach chair. What a time to not be paying attention! Natalie moans about having to be stuck in the middle of these two!

Natalie frowns at Cairo and mentions that gift Cairo’s supposed to be giving Isla. Cairo is clueless. Isla smiles as Natalie says that she doesn’t know what it is, but why doesn't he give it to her already? Cairo has figured it out. He sighs, annoyed. Natalie mutters at him about being a cheapskate. He clears his throat.

Rocco arrives, declaring the weather amazing! He peels off his shirt and sexy music starts to play. And dang, that boy is ripped! Cairo looks at him, shocked. Rocco passes his shirt to a giggling Natalie. Cairo looks down at his own chest as Natalie is moon-eyed and puts his shirt back on, complaining that it’s cold. Heheh.

Isla smiles at all that and asks Cairo to put some body oil on her. Cairo is clueless as he agrees to do it. Natalie is sort of frowning watching him do it, like she can’t believe he’s actually going to rub it on Isla’s back. Cairo looks completely bored, but Natalie doesn't see that. She’s annoyed. She holds up her legs and asks Rocco to put some on her. Heh! Because those are exactly the same. Cairo doesn’t miss her request.

Rocco laughs and suggests they put it on later. He adds that Cairo and Isla seem like they're trying to set the mood so they should leave the pair alone. Natalie is happy to go along with that idea. Cairo isn’t happy with that idea, of Natalie and Rocco going somewhere else and making a mood of their own. He yells after Natalie, asking where she’s going and that there are eyes watching them! Not any spying for Mom, though. Natalie and Rocco ignore him.

But they’re intercepted by Kelvin – who looks absolutely ridiculous wearing a yellow hoodie and matching inner tube. His trunks don’t match. He’s also sporting huge sunglasses with black lenses. Kelvin yells at Rocco to stop and hold his place! Love that idiom! Not ‘stop right there!’ but ‘hold your place!’ He asks if Rocco trying to steal Natalie again. Natalie sighs, annoyed. Kelvin rips off his sunglasses and dramatically tells Rocco that he’s watching them with both eyes. And his face is cracking me up!

Isla yells at Natalie and Rocco to ‘go play.’ Like they were a pair of children. They won't be able to go far anyway. Rocco likes that idea. He picks up a kicking Natalie, who is also laughing, and takes her over to the water. Cairo watches them, wanting it to be him, rather than Rocco. Kelvin’s still playing hall monitor. Rocco throws Natalie into the water, laughing. Cairo watches, miserable. Natalie yells that he just got her only clothes wet! Cairo mutters, “good going.” I can’t tell if he’s talking to himself or Rocco.

Kelvin joins in the fun. It’s hysterical watching Rocco use Kelvin’s inner tube to dunk him. Cairo is getting more bummed. Kelvin yells at Cairo to help him as they splash him. Cairo mutters to Isla that they’re acting like a bunch of little kids, like he’s above all that. He groans, muttering that they keep bugging him – like he doesn’t want to go – but then he goes and gets in the water. He immediately wants to get out because it’s cold. Rocco walks up and asks Isla what she’s doing, since they’ve come so far by the sea. They have to play. Then he picks up Isla and throws her in the water, too.

Really fun watching them play in the water. I notice that Cairo is the only one that Natalie wrapped her arm around and tried to dunk… Kelvin gets dunked the most.

Zoe slowly leaves the pharmacy. She does not look happy. With that music playing and the look on her face, I’m wondering if she’s knocked up. She calls Natalie. Natalie hedges when Zoe asks to get together but Zoe pulls a guilt trip so Natalie tells her where they are. And the guys are making a sand castle.

Cairo gives Aunt a call. She declares that he’s turned the entire house upside down. Grandma is really upset. Switch to the living room. Grandma is dressing down both Mom and Dad. She wants to know why there is already talk of stopping the wedding. Mom says that Natalie’s has a problem with Cairo once having a fiancée. Not true. Just that he’s still hanging out with the fiancée. Nice twisting things, Mom. Grandma is surprised since they didn't seem like that kind of people.

Mom declares that in any case, since this happened, Cairo's wedding got called off for the second time. She looks at Dad and says that it’s a good thing for him, at least. Dad’s surprised by that comment. Grandma wants to know what Mom means. Mom says that Dad had hopes for Isla. To be more exact, her father's connections. Way to stick it to your husband. Dad starts to protest that he didn't really say it that way. Grandma ask at him and says that he shouldn't be using his son for his benefit. Dad agrees that the happiness of those directly involved is what's most important. Mom looks at him with that one. Her impassive face says, “Really? You’re going to say that? Really?”

Mom asks what they should do. The ones directly involved in this matter don't want the marriage. Mom declares that Natalie was the one who put an end to this. Again, Grandma is surprised. Mom says that Natalie was trying on the wedding dress, when all of a sudden, in front of her and Mom’s eyes, Natalie ran away in a car with someone other than Cairo. Mom, of course, has no idea who was driving the car. Wow, Mom is shifting blame again. No mention of how she jabbed and jabbed at Natalie until Natalie broke. It was just all of a sudden, out of no where. Mom supposes that Natalie has someone else who she wants to be with.

Aunt comes up, saying that she think she knows the person who is with Natalie. She has her phone. She shows Dad, who starts to laugh. He says that it seems they just needed a break. Grandma breaks out into a big smile and claps her hands, rejoicing. She says that the pair aren't the type to separate so easily! Mom is looking warily at the phone; she hasn’t seen the picture yet. Aunt reluctantly shows Mom the picture: a smiling Cairo and Natalie together at the beach after playing in the water. Mom just stares at it, not believing, as Aunt says that their Madam Sia (K.Mom) has declared victory a little too early. Mom closes her eyes. You can almost hear her say, “Oh, crap!”
