Chapter 20 - Demanding
Liam Nightly
You were with him yesterday.
In Liam's office, with the door locked, I stood in front of him, wondering why I had been summoned.
Chloe Cage
I seriously wonder if you send someone to stalk me or not.
Liam Nightly
Answer this question then. Do you like him?
Chloe Cage
Of course I do! He's Shade! Everyone likes him.
Liam Nightly
Everyone except for me. Stay away from him.
Chloe Cage
Why? I'm not having sxx with him, Liam.
Liam Nightly
But do you love him? Do you want to be in a relationship with him?
Chloe Cage
Why would you care? If that's all, I'm leaving.
I turned around and just as I went to leave, he ran and grabbed my wrist, his face clearly annoyed.
Liam Nightly
I won't! Answer the question. Do you love him?
I snarled at him, annoyed.
Chloe Cage
Yes, yes I do like him! So what?
He slightly backed away, his eyes visibly hurt.
He seemed visibly shocked. He wasn't expecting such an answer. He at least wanted me to deny it.
Chloe Cage
I've liked him ever since he was a child. I've loved him like family. We only had each other. Abandoned by our parents, forced to-
I couldn't say the rest. My arms chilled, making me hug myself.
Chloe Cage
It doesn't matter.
Chloe Cage
You wouldn't understand anyway...
Liam Nightly
THEN TELL ME SO I CAN!
He grabbed onto my hand, pulling me into his arms.
His sudden warmth made my cheeks flush as I smelt the scent of pinewood on his expensive clothes.
Chloe Cage
I told you, even if I recited everything that happened in my past, you wouldn't-
Liam Nightly
Trust me, Chloe. Open yourself up to me.
I wanted to. I really did want to.
Chloe Cage
Fine but don't say I didn't warn you. This is a story about a boy who thought he was on top of the world and a silent girl who beat him no matter what he did.
The scent of paper flew up from the floorboards while Shade Stevens performed a miracle unlike any other.
Shade Stevens
And that's why x is equal to positive 4 and negative 4.
At only 4 years old, he solved complicated algebra equations like they were a walk in the park.
No one could compare to him and he liked it that way.
He was never lonely because he always had many people around him, telling him good job and well done for what he did right.
He felt on top of the world until one day, when one of his caretakers brought in a little girl.
Her hair was silky and smooth, just like a chestnut, and her eyes were as blank as an empty notebook.
That's when he made the acquaintance of Chloe Cage.
Despite what he thought at first, Chloe was anything but dumb. Her intellect surpassed him by miles and never lost a game, no matter what it was.
However, she only muttered words when she needed to.
Shade started to hate her since all of the attention which was supposed to be on him suddenly was on her, an empty doll.
One day, he was so angry that he ran to his special place to hide.
As he crouched there, frustrated and angry, something hit his head.
As he looked up, he saw Chloe there with two lollipops in her hand.
She extended one to him and just like that, a friendship was made.
Don't of them studied together and once they were at an age of 10, they got to leave the institute that they were in.
They performed at social event parties, playing each other. And every single time, Shade lost over and over again.
Never could he win one chess game or chequer game no matter how hard he practised.
And the winner always got fawned by the public and got given little caramel sweets from the ladies purses. However, no matter where he hid in the party, Chloe would find him and they'd share the sweets equally.
Shade Stevens
I think that I want to dye my hair when I'm older. Maybe a flashy red. But maybe blond...
Shade Stevens
What about you?
Chloe shrugged her shoulders while eating her last caramel.
Shade Stevens
I don't think you should. You have such pretty hair already! It's so smooth!
Touching Chloe's hair for the first time, he smiled and then picked it up to smell it.
Shade Stevens
Yep and it smells great too!
Then, Chloe threw yet another caramel at his face and turned around, blushing.
Both of them only had each other yet after some time, entertaining these rich people like animals in a circus became scary.
Then, one day, both children got news that the other one was dead.
Devastation was one word to describe their feelings. And sadness.
Chloe Cage
And that's how I spent my childhood.
Chloe Cage
Can you understand why Shade means so much to me now?
Then, Liam hugged me tightly and I gripped onto his shirt tightly.
Liam Nightly
I won't let anyone do that to you ever again. I promise.
Hope you enjoyed this long chapter.
