Episode 11

Narrated by Vicenzo

Today, on my way back to my pack, I came across a young wolf on the road accompanied by a girl. She seemed very familiar so I turned around and stopped beside them. I chatted briefly with the youth but was most intrigued by the girl, who looked sad and clung to him. Her scent was familiar, but it was mingled with that of three different wolves making it hard to place. I tried to see her face, but she barely turned, and with her eyes shut, I couldn't get a proper look. After bidding them farewell, I continued on my way, still puzzled by the girl.

Returning home, I was greeted by Matheus—three months apart is quite lengthy.

"Daddy, daddy!" He ran to embrace me—I bent down and lifted him into my arms.

"How are you? Have you been good?" He clung to me tightly, reminding me of Elizabeth when I had to leave.

"Yes, very well." I set him down and he dashed ahead of me. I headed to my office and called Alec for an update on the new pack.

When Alec arrived, we discussed how the new pack was still unnamed and lacked an alpha. I would have to personally see to this, selecting the strongest and most responsible among them, a task that could take a week. Our conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door.

"Come in," I said somewhat irked.

"Excuse me, Supreme," Athos entered.

"Speak," I replied, irritated by the need for another trip.

"Sir, we have news regarding Eliz." The moment I heard her name, my irritation dissolved.

"We've found two couples with matching names, both of whom own farms."

"What are we waiting for? To these places we must go!" I nearly shouted.

"The first, a human couple, lives about 170 kilometers away, unlikely as there are no schools," he said.

"Alec, send five scouts to this property," I ordered, and he nodded and left.

"Sir, the next property belongs to a pair of exiled wolves," Athos informed. Remembering the young wolf on the road, I wondered, "In which direction is this property?"

"About 480 kilometers north." Could it be I had passed her and not recognized her? It couldn't be her scent.

Damn! I can't believe I might have met her without knowing.

"Athos, refuel my car and prepare my belongings; I'll go myself," I wanted to see this girl with my own eyes.

After he left, I quickly showered, got dressed, and ran into Mel. I refrained from telling her of the potential encounter with Elizabeth today.

"Where are you rushing to?" She asked, needing a good excuse, I knew.

"The new pack is in turmoil; I need to hurry before it leads to war," I lied, her expression dimming, still upset from our last argument.

"Mel, we'll talk when I return," I kissed her goodbye and left, taking Alec and Athos with me, planning to arrive by nightfall. My resolution firm, I needed my daughter with me.

Around two hours in, a noise from the trunk startled me. I stopped the car and to my amazement found Matheus hidden there.

"What are you doing here?" I glared reprovingly.

"I heard you talking about Elizabeth and wanted to meet her, so I hid," he said. While furious, I was also glad he'd come along.

"I'll call your mother and let her know you're with me," I couldn't go back for him.

"Athos, look after him—"

"Yes, sir."

Upon retrieving my phone, there were thirty missed calls from Mel.

Call connected.

"Hi Mel," She answered in panic.

"MATHEUS IS MISSING!"

"Mel, listen. He snuck into the car," her sobbing came over the line.

"Is he really okay?"

"Yes. I'll bring him back tomorrow."

"Until then."

Call ended.

Returning to the vehicle, only an hour and a half remained to reach our destination. I handed the wheel to Alec, fatigue taking over. With thoughts of Elizabeth, I drifted off to sleep.

He barely made it home before leaving upon receiving news—he truly loves her like his own daughter.

"Dad, Matheus needs the bathroom," Athos's voice jarred me from my thoughts.

I halted the car, and Athos stepped out with Matheus, while I surveyed the night sky.

"What if it's not Elizabeth?" I whispered, dreading the Supreme's and my boy's potential disappointment.

"Where are we? And why are we stopped, Alec?" The Supreme awoke, disgruntled.

"Your son needed the bathroom."

Once they were back, I drove on. Spotting the sign for "MOON GODDESS FARM" at the entrance, I stopped, awaiting instructions on whether to enter uninvited...

My aunt attempted to discuss today's events with me, but I refused to speak to her or my uncle. Instead, Samuel, with whom I felt more at ease, was summoned. We played video games in my room, which took my mind off nearly harming a classmate.

"Samuel, do you think I'm an aberration?" I questioned the ease of lifting someone with one hand.

"Not at all, you're just stronger than most," he reassured me with a smile.

"You're not afraid of me?"

"I have my secrets too, which I'll share with you in time," he replied cryptically.

"I won't return to school; Manuela's frightened visage is seared into my memory, surely she believes I'm a monster," I said, a tear trickling down my cheek.

"If that's your wish, I'll support you and remain by your side," he graciously offered, and to my surprise, gifted me a peck on the lips, leaving me speechless.

"I love you, and I'll wait for you," his declaration affecting me.

"I...I don't know what to say," I managed, feeling his gaze fixate on my hand.

"Just promise to always stand with me," I responded, eyes to the ground.

"I pledge my unwavering side, and will await your heartfelt answer," his eyes sparkled with hope.

"I'll strive to win your heart, and one day, I aim to marry you," I laughed, but was cut short when a car stopped outside our house, Samuel peering out the window, annoyed.

"That's the same car from this morning, what's it doing here?" Who was that man? I hadn't looked closely, but he seemed powerful.

His voice boomed at the door, "EMMY AND JOAO DRUMMOND, COME OUT NOW!" What did he want with my aunts and uncles? I heard someone call my name.

"Elizabeth, Elizabeth," a familiar, but distant voice called.

My aunt entered the room, "Samuel, protect her with your life." Protect me from what, from whom?

"What does he want with Eliz?" Samuel appeared unsettled.

"I don't know yet, but don't let her leave the room," my aunt said and departed quickly. Before the door closed, I glimpsed my Uncle Joao clutching his shotgun.

"Samuel, what's happening?" I asked, anxious about the unknown.

"I'll offer a rapid explanation: what you thought was merely fantasy is real—we are real," he explained, but his words were like a riddle.

"What do you mean?" I was baffled as he hugged me and whispered in my ear, "I'm a real wolf, assuring you in my embrace." I froze, disbelieving, only for him to back off and, incredibly, transform into a wolf before me. And though it was unbelievable, I felt only confusion, not fear.

"That man downstairs is the Supreme; he must be here for your uncles," Samuel concluded.

A loud crash from the living room prompted me to dash out. There, below the now shattered staircase, Uncle Joao struggled to his feet. But as a massive wolf bore down on him, fury consumed me, and I shielded him, hurling a nearby table at the beast. It halted, staring back at me, taking a step forward just as Samuel stepped between us, shouting defiantly.

"I WON'T LET YOU TOUCH HER!" The wolf morphed back into a man, one I was sure I'd seen before.

"What do you want with my family?" I demanded, unafraid of the imposing figure before me.

"Your eyes are not green!" His voice wavered, Samuel glancing into my eyes and whispering, "Your eyes are yellow."

"What do my eyes have to do with you invading my home and assaulting my family?" I was still lost amidst the chaos, but I was certain about one thing: this was my home.

As Athos entered, I realized just how unreal this all seemed. Losing consciousness, the last thing I heard was Samuel's voice.

I awoke in my room, Samuel sitting by my bed.

"I knew it, just a nightmare!"

"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but yesterday's events were real," he said, the gravity in his voice causing me to sit up abruptly.

"And my uncles, where are they?" I turned to him, seeking comfort.

"I don't know how to say this, but they've been detained on kidnapping charges," he touched my face gently.

"They kidnapped who, and why?"

"It seems they 'kidnapped' you, according to the man downstairs," disbelief washed over me as he spoke.

The door opened to reveal a beautiful young boy.

"Hi Elizabeth, I'm Matheus, your brother," his words struck me—they couldn't be true; I had no brother.

"I don't have a brother," I replied, confused as he looked at me sadly.

He sat on my bed, studying me, "Your scent is different."

"Matheus, do you know where my uncles are?"

"They're in their room, prisoner, unable to leave until my father interrogates them," Samuel and I quietly moved towards them, seeking the truth.

Entering their room, Samuel checked the hall.

"Aunt Emmy, Uncle Joao," they greeted me with tired smiles.

"My dear, we regret the chaos. We hoped to keep you with us forever," their words left me frustrated and clueless.

"Please explain what's happening, why do they want me?" I pleaded for answers.

"My love, it won't be easy, but listen to everything we say," my aunt began without meeting my gaze.

She revealed that she was paid to take me in, initially only agreeing because she owed a debt, that a wolf like my father was involved, unknowing of his identity, and how they regretted deceiving me. I collapsed, weeping from all the revelations.

Samuel rushed in, "We have to go, someone's coming," grabbing his hand, we returned to my room. I wanted to flee from it all, away from the person who snatched me from home and took me from my newfound happiness.

The man from last night entered my room, his presence causing me to seek refuge behind Samuel. His eyes, though, conveyed something tender.

"Hello, little one," he tried to approach, his effort met with my silence.

"Come now, don't you remember me, your own father?" His face was vaguely familiar, but memory failed me. Samuel intervened.

"She doesn't recall anything before six," he stood protectively.

"And who might you be?" The man regarded Samuel with disdain.

"I am Elizabeth's future husband," Samuel's statement was met with visible anger from the man, and the imaginary friend behind him looked on with sadness.

"I need to understand what's real, I'm tired of the conflicting stories. I'm starting to think I'm insane, maybe I never left that hospital," I laughed weirdly.

"We'll go slowly, okay? Your ‘uncles' told us about your life, but not who took you from us," Vicenzo, who claimed to be my father, approached. I recoiled from his touch, only trusting Samuel for the moment.

"Pack your things, you're returning home with me today. I've searched too long, and now that I've found you, nothing will harm you again," he announced, leaving with Athos in tow.

"Samuel, do I have no choice?"

"It seems not; he is the Supreme, and I can't defy him. If that weren't so, I'd tear out his throat and escape with you," Samuel's admission brought a shy smile to my face.

"Will you come with me?"

He shook his head, "Alphas must grant me permission to enter their pack, or they might kill me," I gasped, appalled at the thought. Alec appeared, fetching my bag.

"Miss Elizabeth, ready to go?" His query was met with a glance at Samuel.

"I won't go without Samuel," I stated firmly.

"I'll check with your father," he left, later returning with permission for Samuel and his family to join the pack. Samuel called his father, explaining the situation, and we got into the car—with Matheus dozing on my shoulder and me huddled with Samuel, we set off for the pack lands. Worry for my uncles swelled as the journey unfolded in the quiet of the car.
