Episode 13

Narrated by Elizabeth

In one week, it will be my birthday, and Vicenzo is prepping the basement to keep me confined for a full week until the full moon vanishes. He's uncertain if it will help, but they plan to use silver-coated chains. They're installing bars on the windows and doors because I become uncontrollable and no one should enter or come near, or I might end up killing someone.

These last days, I haven't been able to be around anyone. With only a few days left, I am already under the moon's influence; I can't control my strength or my rage. Little Matheus tried to come into my room, but I locked the door. I don't want to hurt him accidentally, nor do I want him to be scared of me.

According to the books I've read, the forced transformation by the moon will bring much pain, and I will remain a wild wolf even during daylight for the seven days of the full moon. I wish I didn't have to go through this, for after I return to normal, I will be regarded as an adult by the pack.

"Hey, little one," Vicenzo draws me out of my thoughts.

"Hi, Vicenzo," I respond, still unable to call him dad.

"Don't worry, I won't let you hurt anyone, nor yourself," he always stands by me, yet I can't trust myself. The good thing is that as soon as the moon disappears on the last day, I won't turn into a wolf ever again.

"I trust you; I just don't trust myself." He embraces me, and I feel calmer.

I return to my room, lock myself in, and sleep.

Dream on

Athos is smiling, coming to embrace me.

"Hi," I greet with a touch of despondence.

"Eliz, I know I distanced myself from you, but I thought it best to give you space," he says with a sorrowful look.

"I'm still not sure how I feel," he assures me, placing his hands on my shoulders and looking into my eyes.

"I'll wait as long as it takes for you to decide, and I won't give up on you. I haven't given up until now; having a rival won't make me either," he speaks and holds me in his arms. I know it's only a dream, but it feels as though I could touch him.

He considers me his future wife because of a bond he shares with me, but I'm a half-breed with no such bond. Anyone wishing to be with me will have to earn my love. But still, I'm not quite sure what my feelings for Athos and Samuel are. It's as if I love them both equally.

"I have to wake up now, Eliz, but remember, I love you." As he speaks, I wake up.

Dream off

Waking up, I lean on the bed guard and hear Matheus crying at the door. What has happened?

"Matheus, what happened?" I ask without opening the door.

"You don't love me anymore; you won't let me in." He can't understand why I'm acting this way.

"I love you, that's why I can't be near you right now." I want to open the door and comfort him, but if I lose control, I might frighten or hurt him.

"I'll behave, I promise. I won't do anything to upset you." I give in to the young one's whimpering and open the door. He rushes in and embraces me. Opening the door was a mistake—he's sobbing uncontrollably.

"Hey, stop all the weeping. I'm not going anywhere. But you know I'm under the moon's influence, and I just want to protect you." He snuggles into my lap and, after much crying, falls asleep. I place him in my bed and watch over him as he sleeps. When Mel enters my room as always, her gaze is cold. She takes my brother away without uttering a word.

Today I will be confined to the basement for a week. Everything I've learned from books does not set my mind at ease. Samuel comes to escort me from my room to the basement. Tomorrow will be my birthday; by midnight, I will become a killing machine.

I enter the cell and Vicenzo chains me by the ankle, then quickly exits and locks the barred door.

"I'm sorry, my love, but it's necessary for you to be confined," he says.

"I don't want anyone to see me," I reply. He nods in agreement, and soon everyone leaves, stranding me alone. It's not long until midnight, and I'm already feeling pains throughout my body. I lie down on the mattress, curl up in hope that the pain will subside, but it only grows worse. I feel my skin tearing, my bones breaking, and I can't breathe, as if my lungs were being crushed. Unable to bear the pain, I start to scream and soon lose consciousness.

Narrated by Mel

Today, I am definitely going to put an end to that bastard. I hear her howling and screaming from the basement—this is my chance to get rid of her. I grab a pistol with silver bullets and proceed, trying to stay hidden until I reach the basement. I'll let her escape, and as soon as she exits the house, I'll shoot to kill under the pretense of protecting the pack from the monster she's becoming.

I reach the room that's been turned into a cell to contain her. The sight before me is terrible; she's still in the midst of her human-to-wolf transformation, looking more like a cursed werewolf than anything. Her transformation into a full wolf will come soon, and I must release her before it completes, lest she kills me.

I forcefully break in the doors without leaving evidence that she was deliberately set free. Carefully, I enter, observing her writhing in pain. I approach the foot where the chain is attached, grab it to break it free, suffering a slight burn from the silver, and finally snap it. I quickly leave, leaving the basement doors ajar, and lie in wait to ambush her once she exits.

After some minutes, I see gleaming yellow eyes in the darkness before the door.

For a moment, fear paralyzes me, but I can't let her beastly form and the anger in her eyes overwhelm me. I await her shattering the glass door of the kitchen and exiting before I start shouting.

"ELIZABETH HAS ESCAPED!" I yell repeatedly, to alert everyone.

I dash outside, draw the pistol, but she is too swift. I make eight shots; all hit, but I'm unsure of their exact impact. She was entering the woods but turned to me as the bullets struck her. I hear my son screaming.

"ELIZ... ELIZ..." Her gaze turns to him with such ferocity, truly a wild wolf driven only to kill. I am too far to prevent the attack... I close my eyes to avoid witnessing the gruesome outcome and the high price my son will pay with his life due to my fault.

Narrated by Athos

I stand in front of the house, unwilling to listen to Eliz's torture any longer. Samuel exited with me, likely already concerned for his little sister. Hearing Mel's screams alerting to Eliz's escape, we exchange looks and rush towards the back as I hear shots fired. Exiting, I'm presented with one of the worst scenes: Eliz is nearly killing her brother. Without hesitation, I step in front, taking a bite at my shoulder meant for him. I know Eliz would never forgive herself if she killed him, even unconsciously. I watch Samuel shift into his wolf form and engage her in a struggle to keep her from killing me. Mel approaches, props me against a wall, and takes the boy to safety. Seeing the pain in Samuel's eyes as he contends with Eliz breaks my heart—he's trying to calm her so she can be placed back in the basement. Despite my injuries, I transform into my wolf form to aid in rendering her unconscious. She's so powerful that even together we struggle to subdue her. She bites my injured shoulder and flings me against a wall. Samuel grips her from behind with a fierce bite and throws her down. Though staggered, she stands, her eyes filled with rage. Samuel attempts to reason with her.

"ELIZABETH, STOP!" But it's useless; she doesn't understand she isn't just a wolf now. Aiming another violent assault at Samuel, he collapses unconsciously, one leg clearly broken from her powerful jaw. The Alpha emerges with a weapon in hand, possibly intending her death.

I can't move.

"Don't kill her; she doesn't know what she's doing," I murmur weakly.

He fires six shots, and she begins to falter, collapsing to the ground. I lack the strength to even weep; I yearn to be by her side before the end. How did things take such a tragic turn? My vision blurs, and soon, I lose consciousness.

Narrated by Vicenzo

20 minutes before the escape

"I'm stepping out; I can't stand to see her screaming in pain without being able to help," I announce, leaving. I know there's a chance she might escape, but I hope the cell withstands her fury. At Alec's house, I had requested a curfew so no one would be on the streets should she get out, to avoid her injuring anyone.

"Alpha, I have something prepared for Eliz in case she escapes,"

What is it?" I ask skeptically. He brings a shotgun with six rounds out.

"You must be mad if you think I'll kill her!" His smirk conveys a mix of assurance and madness.

"I'm not insane enough to believe you'd do it," he replies, bringing out six cartridges and loading the shotgun before me.

"I had this tranquilizer made in case she breaks free, but you will need to use all six at once, or she won't sleep." I don't anticipate needing it but take it anyway.

Sitting on Alec's porch, I hear Mel's frantic cries for help on the street.

"What's happening?" I spring up, alarmed.

"ELIZABETH HAS ESCAPED!" she yells, clutching Matheus.

"Alec, take care of them." I grab the gun and sprint home, hoping she hasn't gone far. Then I hear a commotion at the back of the house.

The scene unfolding is horrific; I pray she remembers none of it. I pass Athos, who's near fainting, and when I see her throw an unconscious Samuel on the ground, I raise the gun and fire six shots. She staggers and collapses. I'm relieved we stopped her before she killed someone. I call my pack to assist the boys and order more chains. With eight of us, we manage to haul her back to the basement. This time, I restrain each limb separately, allowing little movement, and place another coil around her neck. There are six more days until the moon disappears. When we finish securing her, it's 5 a.m., and I send some wolves to investigate her escape. We need to figure out where we went wrong, especially since we'll face a similar situation in 12 years with Samuel's sister. I understand why the old law exists—if she reached a town, she could expose our world.

I pass the room where the boys are.

"You did well preventing her from leaving the property," they'll be recovered in a week, by which Elizabeth will have returned to normal without a single scratch. And since she'll have no recollection, the situation is under control.

Mel lies in bed asleep, hugging Matheus. I'm tired but spot a small burn on Mel's hand. It hasn't healed—only silver could cause that.

With the day's events weighing heavily, I cast aside concerns about the burn; I'll discuss it with her later. I shower, get dressed, and head for bed. I just want this week to pass as quickly as possible. Thankfully, she'll never have to go through another transformation. Sleep claims me...
