Episode 4

Narrated by Elizabeth

Six months have passed since my father returned, and my relationship with Mel is improving. I'm almost trusting her—she's been treating me well—but I have this feeling that I shouldn't trust her.

I'm in the kitchen waiting for them to join me for breakfast when my father walks in, all smiles, accompanied by Mel.

"Good morning, dear, I have some wonderful news to share!" What could it be?

"Elizabeth, you're going to have a sibling!" my father tells me with a broad smile. I never expected this day to come so soon; I don't even know what to say.

"Don't you like the news?" Mel asks.

"It's not that. I just don't know how to react," I reply and leave the table. "See you later," I bid them farewell and leave as quickly as I can.

I rush to my room, grab my knife and my crossbow; I feel like I'll feel better if I go hunting for a bit. I call Athos to join me.

"This crossbow that your father gave you for your birthday is quite beautiful," Athos can't stop looking at it in admiration. It was indeed a thoughtful gift; he knows what I like.

"Hey Athos, soon my father will have an heir with his blood running through their veins. I feel like my days as the favorite child to the supreme are numbered!" I confess and then fall silent.

"Look at me, Eliz. Whether or not you become the Luna, I will always be your Beta, and I won't let anyone hurt you or make you suffer," his declaration buoys my spirits.

"And if it makes you feel any better, as the older sister, you could teach them a few things—it could be a way to connect with him or her." If I look at it this way, it could be fun to have someone to talk to and play with, given that I'll be almost 8 years older.

When I return home, Mel calls me aside for a talk in the study. I follow her calmly. As I enter after her, I close the door.

"Elizabeth, I would like it if you came with me to the town to shop for the baby's things." Something inside of me screams not to go with her, but having never left the village, I think it might be a great idea.

"Of course, I'd love to go with you."

"Get ready; we're leaving in 20 minutes." As soon as she speaks, I dash to my room to bathe and change. When I return, Mel stands by the door waiting for me, extending her hand for me to take—a first for us.

As soon as I get in the car, I smell something strange, like medicine.

"Are you sick?"

"Why do you ask, Elizabeth?"

"Nothing. I just thought I smelled medicine." I'm feeling strange, like I shouldn't be here.

"Ah, those are the prenatal vitamins I had to pick up." It doesn't smell like vitamins, but I'm not one to quibble.

After 40 minutes, we arrive at the city amusingly named "The Howl of the Wolf"—my father told me it's because they always hear wolves howling. It's my first time here, and I'm enthralled.

"Dear, you must be hungry since we left before lunch. How about a hot dog and a milkshake?" I respond with a huge grin—they never let me eat anything off-diet.

"YES!"

After eating, we sit in a square with a beautiful fountain in the middle. I approach, sipping my drink.

"Look, Mel, what a beautiful fountain." Mel comes over to take a look. I start losing consciousness; my balance falters. Mel ensures I don't fall.

"Sorry, but you won't be interfering with my life anymore," she whispers in my ear. I can't see anything, but I still hear noises in the distance. Someone is carrying me—I don't know who or where. I hear Mel's voice far off.

"Take her, and leave her as far away from a wolf as possible." I fall asleep and hear no more.

Narrated by Mel

My plan is going smoothly so far, with no one aware she left with me. My plan is perfect. Now I've entrusted her to an institute for seriously troubled children; even if she talks, no one will believe she's a wolf's daughter.

After sending her away, I return to shopping, getting everything my child needs. I'm certain it's going to be a boy. I buy a complete nursery and plenty of clothes. Then I take the car for a wash, erasing any trace of her scent and head home.

When I arrive, I see the village is in an uproar.

"My love, what's happening?" feigning ignorance of the commotion over the bothersome girl.

"Mel, my love, it's Elizabeth—she's missing. No one has seen her since before lunch!" You'll only need time to forget her and will devote yourself completely to our legitimate heir.

"Calm down, Vincenzo. She'll show up; she's probably just trying to attract attention since she's no longer the only child in the house." Don't count on it, dear. She won't be emerging from where she is anytime soon.

It's time to shed tears like a worried mother, while inside, I smile, thinking of the happy future in our wolf-exclusive household.

It's late at night, and the search continues. I feign weeping in my room. When people pass by in the corridor, I let even real tears fall—tears of joy for getting rid of the girl who would've ruined my baby's future.

"Mel, my love, you need to rest. Staying up late will harm our baby." He's so sweet; of course, I will lay down, but not before a bit of theatrics.

"Don't hesitate to call me if there's any news about her. Goodnight." Knowing they'll find nothing, I sleep peacefully.

Narrated by Vincenzo

I'm desperate over my little girl's sudden disappearance. I go to look for Athos—he always knows what's going on with her.

"Good evening, Alec. I know it's late, but I'd like to speak with Athos."

"No problem, I'll call him right now." My patience is thin; I want my girl back.

"Good evening, Mr. Vincenzo."

"Athos, do you have any idea where Elizabeth might be?" His eyes are welling up with tears.

"I'm sorry, I left her at your house this morning and returned to mine. She said she would try to be a good older sister and went inside." His gaze seems honest.

"Thank you, and goodnight. I'll let you know as soon as we find her." I turn around and head towards the woods, transforming into my lupine form, attempting to catch her scent, but it's so faint in the air since this morning when she went hunting.

If anyone has harmed her, I swear I will kill whoever it is. I remember the prisoner—the one who killed my sister; he might have escaped and gone after Elizabeth. I race to the prison.

"Open the door!" I hear the guards' voices.

"It's the supreme; open it quickly! This must be urgent!" As soon as I enter, I head straight for the killer's cell. He's still shackled and looks weak; I decide to end his misery right then and there. Then I return to the woods to find my daughter. It's been 24 hours since she disappeared, and I'm beginning to fear the worst.

Exhausted from hours of running through the forest and finding nothing, I decide to go back and rest a bit before resuming the search. I suppose she might have left the village; I'll have to report her disappearance to the police.

Narrated by Elizabeth

My head hurts, and I’m slightly dazed. I wake up in an all-white room with padded walls and floor, and I'm bound in a straitjacket.

"Is anybody there?" Fear grips me; I don't know where I am or why.

"DADDY, DADDY, DADDY!" In desperation, I call for my father.

"Hello, little one, feeling better now?" Someone speaks from behind the door.

"Who's there?" I focus on the scents—like the last time—and by the strong smell of medicine, and other odors, I deduce that I’m in a hospital.

"I'm Dr. Wilson, your physician. I'll be taking care of you." But there's nothing wrong with me. Why am I here?

"I want to go home." Now that I think about it, I left with Mel.

"Where's Mel? Why did she bring me here?" I don’t know, but the phrase she whispered remains lodged in my mind, deceiving me to get rid of me. I didn’t deserve this.

Panic sets in, and I start screaming, "AHH!...AHH!...AHH!...DADDY, GET ME OUT OF HERE!" I don’t know how, but I break free from the straitjacket. The room is suddenly stormed by six men in white, one of them holding a syringe.

"NO! NO!" Once they restrain me, he injects me, and a deep sleep overtakes me.

Dreaming

I'm at home, seeing everyone coming and going, looking tired and worried.

"What's going on?" It seems like they can’t see me; maybe they are ignoring me because I’m spoiled.

I follow Athos into my room.

"Hi, Athos, what are you doing in my room?" He seems not to see me until our eyes meet, and suddenly he does. He starts crying, hugs me tightly, but his words are silent; he writes on paper, "Where are you? Everyone's worried." As I try to write back, the only thing I manage is, "Save me, Athos. Beware of Mel," before everything vanishes.

"ATHOS!" I wake up screaming his name.

End of dream.
