LOVING MY CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR
First Interaction
Liam Shin
Now go to your instructor, while those student assigned under me, follow me
Inside the ward. The students under Dr. Liam are standing near the nurse’s station. Sandy tries to calm herself, clutching her pen and notebook. Dr. Liam, holding his clipboard, looks at them with sharp eyes.
Liam Shin
(firm) You are my group. While you’re under me, I expect nothing but discipline and hard work. Do I make myself clear?
Dr. Liam’s eyes scan the group again. Then, he stops at Sandy. Her stomach twists as his gaze lingers on her.
Liam Shin
You. Miss Roquez, right?
Liam Shin
(steps closer) Take the patient’s vital signs in Room P01 Bed 3. Report them to me in five minutes.
The other students glance at Sandy, some looking nervous for her. Myenia gives her a tiny “good luck” smile.
Sandy
(swallows hard) Yes, sir.
Sandy walks toward Bed 3, hands slightly shaking as she prepares the BP cuff and thermometer. She keeps reminding herself not to mess up. After finishing, she writes quickly in her notebook and goes back to Dr. Liam, who is waiting.
Sandy
(soft but clear) Sir, here are the results: BP 120/80, pulse 82, respirations 20, temperature 36.8.
Dr. Liam takes the paper from her hand, reading carefully. He doesn’t say anything for a few seconds, making Sandy more nervous. Finally, he looks at her.
Liam Shin
(calm but strict) Not bad. At least you know how to use a sphygmomanometer properly. Most students mess that up on day one even though it was thought to them countless times
Sandy blinks, a little surprised. Did he just… praise her? Even just a little? Her heart races faster than before.
Dr. Liam doesn’t smile, but his eyes soften for a second—just a second—before he turns away to check another student. Sandy feels her cheeks warm as Myenia quickly sneaks beside her.
Myenia suerez
(teasing, whispering) Bestie… did you see that? He looked at you differently.
Sandy
Shhh! It was nothing…😶
But deep inside, she knows it wasn’t nothing. It was the beginning of something she could not explain.
