It was almost 12 Noon and everybody was going home. August finished packing his teaching materials and was cleaning the board.
There was a knock on the door and August turned his head to look over. Callahan Kane stood there leaning against the door in all his glory.
August felt his heart skip a beat. He just smiled and then looked at Dax who looked like he was busy coloring pictures.
"Hey, Daddy's here to pick you." August told the boy, but he also noticed the slight redness on his cheeks.
"Mr. Sage, I don't feel well." Dax pouted and had tears in his big doe eyes.
August frowned. He touched the boy's face, and it was burning.
"Cal, come in here quick. Gather his things for me, will you?" August asked and Callahan raised his eyebrow but did as told.
"Alright, my sweet boy, look at me." August tried to wipe his tears and kissed his cheek.
"Daddy's here, okay? I will go with you to the doctor, yeah? We will get you medicine, and you will feel well. Is that okay, honey?" August spoke very softly and looking at the little one's red face, Callahan's eyes darkened.
"What's wrong with Dax?" He asked, but he didn't get any reply, but he continued to walk behind the duo.
"He's having fever, somehow. I'm not a doctor, so I don't know why. But he looks like he's in pain as well. Probably stomach ache. Get your car, I'll carry him. I doubt he'll even let you touch him right now. My poor baby." August explained and then cradled Dax's head between his neck and shoulders and then grabbed his own bag on the way.
Callahan walked ahead and opened the door for the duo. August sat in the back, Dax now on his lap. Callahan immediately dialed his brother's number.
"Cal, what's wrong? Didn't you go to pick up our baby?" Declan asked.
"Go to the hospital, and ask Jake to hold that Nanny down, don't let her go. Dax is not well. We're taking him to the hospital. Inform Mase and be there." Cal spoke hurriedly and then hung up.
"Cal, do you think the Nanny…?" August asked, but his eyes never left the boy in his lap.
"I'm not sure… But if she's done anything, then I promise I won't spare her. Don't worry." Cal spoke calmly, but only he knew that he was on the verge of setting the whole world on fire.
Callahan had married a girl which his parents had arranged. It was a business transaction. But who knew, she was planning to rob them, and run away.
Dax was 2 days old when that irresponsible woman left him all by himself in the hospital room and ran away without any care. The hospital gave Callahan a call and informed them.
Of course, they were raging with anger. But the baby was more important. But soon after the baby turned two, the woman came back demanding for custody in hope of trying to drain the Kane brothers of some money.
Callahan straightaway divorced her and given the situation, even the court didn't bother listening to her false pretense.
Which is also why the brothers never married and divided the work between themselves while one of them stayed back home to care for the little peanut.
Back To Present.....
The car stopped and Cal got out and opened the door for August, who got out with the little one in his arms.
He saw Mase and Declan, but didn't bother sparring a second glance. His eyes were red and glistening and his jaw clenched.
"Get me Dr. Rachel, the pediatric consultant." He barked at the junior doctor who was looking at the four men who had brought the baby with them.
"O-Okay," He said and ran.
Meanwhile, August found an empty bed and laid Dax carefully on the bed, while carefully taking out his shoes and the small jumper he was wearing.
The boy's face twitched. August frowned. He caressed the boy's face with his knuckles.
"Hey, look at me honey." He said softly, and the boy turned on his side facing him and clutching his tummy.
"H-hurts" he sobbed silently while big drops of tears flowed down his cheeks.
"I'm sorry, so, so, sorry baby. But it won't be long, yeah? The doctor lady will quickly check you and give you medicine for your boo boo, okay?" He coaxed the little boy, but his own heart was in some need to coax.
"August, darling when did you have a baby?" The doctor, ran to him with wide eyes.
"Can you please check up on him, pretty quick. Also, although I'd love to be a father someday, that day isn't any closer. He's the father and them, uncles. I'm his homeroom teacher." He explained while the doctor started her check.
"He's got fever, 39° for now. Did he say he was in pain?" Dr. Rachel questioned and August nodded.
"His tummy, he is clutching his tummy. Do you think it could be food poisoning?" August asked, and he heard three different sharp intakes of breaths.
"Possibly. Hold him, I will inject some pain meds for now, and then we will check him. He's too little to bear that much pain." Rachel frowned and sighed looking at the little boy.
"Okay, I will hold him. You can continue." August said, and he immediately picked up Dax in his arms.
Dax buried himself in August's chest while Dr. Rachel held his hand for inserting an IV line.
"You're okay baby, I won't let them hurt you, yeah. Just a little pinch okay, sweetheart." August held his head close to his chest with one hand and other around his body.
As soon as the doctor inserted the needle in his tiny hands, the boy screamed, but August held him tight.
"It's okay, honey. It's all going to be fine soon. Come on, aren't you my big boy? Big boys don't cry. Big boys are strong." He kept talking to the little one who instantly stopped crying.
Meanwhile, all the three brothers had a very bad look on their face. They observed the way August held their baby, coaxed him, talked to him sweetly. All three had tears in their eyes, especially Callahan.
Nobody had noticed that he had trembled and Declan had held his hand tightly assuring him. Mase was fuming, but he knew better.
"All done, August, this medicine will go on for a while." Rachel said and the next second, Dax vomited all over August's chest.
"Okay, okay, baby, it's fine. Don't be scared." August spoke again, his own tears flowing now.
"What did you give him? Why is he vomiting?" Callahan snapped finally losing his temper.
"Sir, we have only given him pain meds. Fever, stomach-ache, diarrhea and vomiting are signs for food poisoning. I was only praying that it won't be, but now it's confirmed. Don't worry, we will treat him for that now. Rest assured." Rachel calmly explained with a smile.
"I understand it's hard, but you're lucky, you have August here today. He's always here one or two times with children from his school. Don't worry, it's all okay. Your boy is really very strong." She added further.
Meanwhile, August had wiped Dax's face and placed him on the bed. He took off his turtle-neck which left him in a plain loose white shirt underneath.
"Cal, is it possible to get him some clothes? He'll catch cold or else." August asked even without looking at the person he was talking to.
It all felt very natural to all four them. Declan bit his lip to avoid smiling.
"Mase, you stay here. I will go get some from my car. I always keep a pair there just in case." And he ran away.
August took a few wipes and tissues and wiped his shoes off and his pants. Some cleaning staff hurried over and cleaned the floor and others changed the sheets on the bed.
Declan was very quick. "Here, can I help?" He asked and August gave a nod.
"I will hold him up. Careful of that IV line. It will be trouble to get another one in if that comes out." He reminded and Declan made sure not to touch it.
Just then August's phone rang. It answered without looking.
"August Sage speaking... Sorry who?.. Yes, I don't need any alimony. I've made it clear to him already. He's just supposed to pay for the apartment I will buy. That's all. Don't listen to his nonsense. I've had enough. I should've left him long ago, but who knows you go dumb when you fall in love. Furthermore, I'm even surprised myself, that I once loved him... That's fine, I just want to get out of that whatever thing it is, and then he can do whatever that little bitch boy of his…. No worries. Thanks, Andy… I will see you soon, yeah." And then he hung up.
"I'm guessing he's asleep. The pain meds also have sedative properties which help patients to relax. He needs this rest. I have some work to do, I won't be staying, although I really want to be there when he wakes up. I will apply for a week's leave. Let him rest properly." He explained to the three who nodded.
"Thanks a lot, Mr. Sage. It really means a lot. Dax is like our own son for both of us even though he's Cal's. His birth and the days after weren't easy, so we are always cautious with him. Don't know how." Declan stopped and looked at the little boy.
"That's fine. It happens. You can be 100% sure of anything. But don't let that nanny go off easily. And henceforth, keep an eye on his food. He's still small and growing up. He doesn't understand what's good and bad for him. Also, is it okay, if I visit him tomorrow morning before I leave for school. My heart won't be at ease without knowing if he's doing fine. I won't stay for long, just make sure he's okay. Of course, if you guys don't mind." August looked at the three in an unsure gaze.
"You won't be a bother. You can visit tomorrow morning. Here's our contact. Give us a call once you're there. Thanks again, it means a lot." Callahan spoke up this time.
"Anything for the little bean. See you then, kiss him for me when he wakes up." And then August left.
While the dad and the uncles gathered around their baby with teary eyes and heavy hearts.
