CHAPTER 3 : THE NIGHT HER VOICE DIED

AUTHOR'S POV

The past still screams inside her But her lips remain sealed

At Midnight

The walls of her new prison were silent—but her dreams weren’t.

Serene curled into the corner of the grand bed, legs pulled tightly to her chest, eyes shut in restless sleep

And behind her lashes, the nightmare played again

Flashback – Two Years Ago

A stage. A spotlight. A trembling mic in her hand

She was seventeen. Her first solo performance.

Her mother had dressed her in white

You look like an angel , she'd whispered before the curtain rose.

And then… the song began

Her voice was soft. Angelic. Pure. The audience fell into reverent silence

Until — Gunshots

Screams. Blood. Her mother’s hand reaching out from the crowd— Then dropping

She never made it to the end of the song

All she remembered was running. And silence. Her silence.

Present – Knight Estate

Serene jolted awake, breath shallow, skin slick with sweat

She reached for her throat out of instinct.

Still nothing. Always nothing

A faint knock echoed on the door. Before she could stand, the handle turned.

He stepped in wearing black silk pajama pants, his chest bare, hair tousled like he hadn’t slept

His Bedroom – An Empire in Black

He placed her on his massive bed. Dark silk sheets. Cold air. No escape

She tried to sit up, to run, to scream—but he slid in beside her, strong arms wrapping around her waist.
