(skipped up beside Noah, holding an iced latte in one hand and a folded piece of paper in the other)

Sophie

Dylan wrote me another note today. It’s cheesy, but cute

Noah

Yeah? (Smiled at her grin)

Sophie

He said I reminded him of the sunrise. Isn’t that sweet? (Laughed, unfolding paper to read out the note)

Noah

(Watching her, forcing a smile)

Sophie

Hey… are you ok? You look kind of pale

Noah

Yeah, I’m fine, just didn’t sleep well last night (Forced brightness into his voice)

Sophie

Oh, ok. You should try some of those melatonin gummies!

Sophie

Anyway, Dylan asked me to meet him at the cafe in fifteen minutes. And he’s walking me home later. Wanna come?

Noah

Got some errands (shook head)

Sophie

Ok then. Rest up, sleepyhead (gave him a quick hug before leaving)

(Smiled at the hug)

(sat down on the bench after she left, staring at the empty space beside him.)

(pressed his hand to his ribs, where the ache had been growing deeper each day.)

(Twirling her straw in her drink)

Dylan

(Reached across the table to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear)

Dylan

You’re glowing today. That dress brings out your eyes

Sophie

You think so?

Dylan

Absolutely. I’m the luckiest guy here

Sophie

(smiled. It was not her polite smile, but the real one, the one Noah loved.)

Noah

(Standing across the street, unnoticed, tulip in hand)

Noah

(He didn’t cross.)

Noah

(He turned the other way and left for Sophie’s house)

Noah

(Laid the tulip on the doorstep)

Noah

(Tear dropped down onto the petal)
