𝕊𝕖𝕠𝕦𝕝 ℂ𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕣𝕒𝕝 ℍ𝕠𝕤𝕡𝕚𝕥𝕒𝕝, Midnight.
The hallway was cold and silent. Bright lights above flickered slightly, casting sharp shadows on the floor. Nurses moved quickly, their footsteps echoing against the quiet walls.
Outside Room 309, two families waited. On one side sat the Choi family. Madam Choi held her expensive purse tightly, her face hard. Her son, Choi Min-jae, checked his watch again and again, looking annoyed.
Across from them, the Kim family sat still. Chairman Kim walked back and forth. Madam Kim stared at her phone, not saying a word.
No one wept. No one prayed.
Because no one here came for love. Only formality.
The clock ticked toward midnight when the door creaked open.
A nurse stepped out — young, pale, and trembling, cradling a small bundle wrapped tightly in a snow-white blanket. Her face was ghostly, lips dry as she opened them.
Nurse.
Congratulations, *she said softly.* The baby has been delivered. A healthy baby boy.
No cheer.
No celebration.
Just the scrape of chairs as the families stood in unison.
Then came the words that changed everything.
Nurse.
…But the mother… *she swallowed, her voice is low* ... she’s in critical condition. Massive internal bleeding. We’re trying everything, but…
Nurse.
…She might not make it through the night.
Gasps echoed — but none out of heartbreak.
Only scandal. Reputation. Inconvenience.
Madam Choi’s pearl necklace trembled slightly.
Mrs.Choi.
What are you saying? She was fine just yesterday! How could she—?
Nurse.
Her body was fragile. The pregnancy was high-risk. She… she fought to keep the child.
Min-jae scoffed from behind her.
Choi Min-jae.
She should’ve listened. I told her again and again — she wasn’t strong enough to carry it.
The entire hallway froze.
Nurse.
She’s your wife. She’s dying—
Choi Min-jae.
She did this to herself, *Min-jae cut in sharply.* She was warned. She insisted on keeping the baby. I told her I didn’t want this. She’s the one who forced it into our lives.
Chairman Kim stopped pacing.
Mr.Kim.
Mind your tone, Min-jae. You’re speaking of my daughter.
Choi Min-jae.
Your daughter was reckless, *Min-jae said flatly.* Now look what she’s done.
Mrs.Kim.
How dare you speak that way—!
But the doctor emerged next, wiping his brow with a cloth, surgical mask still around his neck. His face was exhausted — grief written in the lines on his forehead.
Doctor.
We’re stabilizing her for now, but it doesn’t look good. The damage is… extensive. She’s conscious, but fading.
Chairman Kim’s face twitched.
Mr.Kim.
Is there anything money can do?
Doctor.
Sir… this isn’t about money. It’s about time. Minutes, maybe.
The baby whimpered. The nurse tried to soothe him, gently rocking him in her arms.
She turned to Min-jae, eyes pleading.
Nurse.
Would you… would you like to hold your son?
Min-jae looked at her like she had offered him poison.
Choi Min-jae.
He’s the reason she’s dying, *he snapped.* I never wanted him. I told her to abort. This… this thing took her from me.
The nurse flinched as though slapped.
Mrs.Choi.
This child has been nothing but misfortune since the day she got pregnant.
A faint cry rose from the infant — not loud, but heart-wrenching. As if he sensed the venom in the air. His little fists clenched, his face scrunched, tears spilling down a face too new for sorrow.
The doctor snapped, his voice rising.
Doctor.
You are talking about a baby, he didn’t ask to be born! He didn’t choose any of this.
Choi Min-jae.
Then let someone else deal with him.
Min-jae said coldly, stepping back.
Choi Min-jae.
He’s not my problem.❄
And then—
The air shifted.
Thunderous footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Fast. Furious.
A man turned the corner — tall, striking, and utterly unignorable. His coat flew behind him, his dark hair stuck to his damp forehead, and fire — no, a storm — swirled in his almond eyes.
No one breathed.
Even the nurse froze, baby clutched tight to her chest.
Taehyung didn’t look at anyone.
He walked directly to her, his gaze falling instantly on the crying child.
With gentle hands, he reached for the baby.
The nurse hesitated for only a moment — then gave him over.
And the moment that tiny bundle touched his chest — the crying stopped.
The baby breathed in his warmth, his scent… and let out a soft, hiccuping sob, clutching Taehyung’s shirt with trembling fingers.
Taehyung’s jaw clenched. His arms curled protectively around his nephew. His heart — shattered. His sister — dying. His blood — condemned.
He turned, eyes like ice and wildfire both, staring down every single person in that corridor.
Choi Min-jae.
Of course you’d come. Emotional as ever—
Kim Taehyung.
Speak one more word, and I’ll bury that tongue of yours in the floor. ❄
Taehyung’s voice was like thunder.
Low. Dangerous. Calm in the way lightning is calm before it hits.
Chairman Kim stepped forward.
Kim Taehyung.
Not you. Not her. *His glare sliced to his mother.* You stood here and said nothing. Your daughter is dying, and you’re still worried about reputation. ❄
Madam Kim’s mouth trembled.
Kim Taehyung.
You’re pretending. ❄
Kim Taehyung.
And you—you called this child cursed? My sister is giving her life for him. That makes him more human than all of you combined. ❄
The baby whimpered again. Taehyung rocked him gently, fingers brushing his soft cheek.
Then — a voice. Weak. Almost lost, whisper floated from inside the ward.
His eyes widened. The breath fled his lungs.
And without another glance at them, he walked into the room, the baby safe in his arms.
He stepped into the dimly lit room.
The steady beep of the heart monitor echoed in the sterile silence.
Too slow.
Too soft.
Too close to the end.
Taehyung stood frozen at the doorway, his throat clenched tight, eyes locked on the fragile figure lying in the hospital bed.
His sister. His protector. His whole childhood in a single heartbeat.
The whisper was nearly lost to the machines.
He moved instantly, crossing the room like a shadow, pulling a chair beside her bed, his hands trembling. In his arms, the baby stirred softly, letting out a sleepy whimper.
Taeyeon's eyes dim but full of warmth, focused on the child.
Taehyung gently placed the baby in her arms.
Her frail fingers closed around her son like porcelain about to crack. She held him as though she could imprint her soul into his skin in those last fleeting moments.
A single tear rolled down her cheek — and she smiled.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
He’s beautiful… isn’t he?
Her voice was paper-thin.
Taehyung brushed the sweat-soaked hair from her forehead, trying to smile — but it didn’t reach his eyes.
Kim Taehyung.
He looks just like you… especially when he cries.
She let out a soft laugh, barely a breath.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
…Did Min-jae hold him? *she asked, almost childlike in hope.*
Taehyung’s throat clenched.
His heart broke… again.
He couldn’t lie. Not to her. Not now.
Kim Taehyung.
He didn’t even look back.
A small, bitter laugh escaped her lips — dry, hollow.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
I thought… maybe… just once…
Kim Taehyung.
You don’t need him.
Taehyung whispered, gripping her hand.
Kim Taehyung.
He doesn’t deserve you… or this child. You’re not alone, noona. I’m here.
Her eyes flicked down to her child again — memorizing every detail. The curve of his nose. The softness of his cheek. The flutter of lashes.
Then she looked back at Taehyung — the boy she’d raised like a son, the man she trusted more than life.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
I don’t have time, do I?
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Please, don’t lie to me now.
Kim Taehyung.
You’re tired. But you’re not alone. I’m right here.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Promise me.
She said, suddenly urgent, the strength in her voice rising with panic.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Tae… promise me they won’t get him. Not our parents. Not Min-jae. No one. Promise me you’ll protect him. That you’ll raise him… love him like your own.
He leaned forward, burying his face against her forehead, shaking with sobs.
Kim Taehyung.
I swear. On my life. On everything we ever shared. He’ll never feel abandoned. He’ll never feel unloved. I will raise him, noona. I’ll give him everything.
She smiled faintly, her fingers brushing his tear-streaked cheek.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
You were always… the only one who really loved me without reason.
The monitor beeped slower.
She reached up with a shaking hand, caressing her baby’s cheek, then Taehyung’s.
She exhaled sharply — a breath that rattled with pain and finality.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Bear… marry someone who truly sees you. Someone who chooses you, not someone Appa picks to polish the family name.
Her lips trembled as she forced the words out.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Don’t end up like me… I died the moment I said ‘I do.’
Taehyung’s throat tightened. Tears clung to his lashes.
Kim Taehyung.
It’s already done, noona… you know that. I’m engaged. A business deal. That’s all it is.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Then end it.
She said, voice slicing through the room with sudden urgency.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Tae, listen to me. Don’t chain your soul to something that starves it. Don’t live behind a mask and let your heart rot in silence. Don’t become another hollow heir in a tailored cage.
Taehyung blinked rapidly, crumbling inside. He leaned closer, pressing his forehead to her hand.
Kim Taehyung.
I will… I promise. Just— just stay, okay? Stay with me, noona. Don’t go… not yet.
His voice cracked like glass.
She exhaled — slow, like the wind slipping away.
Her eyes fluttered half-open, and her lips moved gently, barely forming the words.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Noona will always stay with you… even if you can’t see me.
Taehyung sobbed softly, his grip trembling.
His tears were falling freely now, streaming down his cheeks.
Kim Taehyung.
Please, I need you—don’t leave me behind.
Her eyes fluttered, unfocused, lost between worlds.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
I’m not afraid anymore… *she whispered, her voice like a dying flame.* He’ll be safe. With you… with my bear…
Taehyung shook his head, refusing to accept the way her voice was fading.
Kim Taehyung.
Stay with me—just a little longer. Please. I’m not ready—don’t go yet, noona—don’t go...
Her eyes drifted toward the ceiling, and her lips barely parted.
The monitor’s beeping began to slow further.
A horrible sound. The countdown to goodbye.
Her hand shook as she lifted it to the baby’s face again. Then to Taehyung’s.
Choi Kim Taeyeon.
Take care of my son… love him like I would’ve. And take care of yourself, Tae… you matter more than they ever told you. I— I lo—
A long, haunting beep filled the room.
His voice was barely a whisper — stunned, trembling, already breaking.
Kim Taehyung.
No, no—please!
He gripped her shoulders, voice rising in panic.
Kim Taehyung.
You can’t—Noona, wake up! Please—don’t do this! Don’t leave me—don’t leave your bear like this.
He sobbed violently, cradling her lifeless body as if trying to will her back to life.
Kim Taehyung.
Please come back… I still have so much to say… so much to show you. Please don’t disappear… not like this… not when I need you most.
There was no answer. No warmth in her hand. No breath on her lips.
A silence that screamed louder than any goodbye ever could.
The baby’s cry pierced the heavy silence — high and desperate — like a fragile soul mourning a loss it hadn’t yet lived long enough to understand.
The sound wasn’t just a cry. It was grief in its purest, smallest form. A mourning wail for a mother he would never know.
The nurse entered quietly, her breath caught in her throat. She approached with reverence, as though the room itself had become sacred in its sorrow.
Gently, she laid a comforting hand on Taehyung’s back — offering solace where words had no place.
Taehyung didn’t flinch. His body trembled with sobs, face buried deep into the fabric of his sister’s blanket — the last piece of her warmth that still lingered. Grief consumed him in violent, crashing waves.
And still, the baby cried.
Minutes passed, silent but for the aching sobs of a brother and the helpless cries of a newborn.
Then, as if something within him shifted — cracked open and bled into purpose — Taehyung slowly lifted his head. His face was a map of sorrow: red, swollen eyes, tear-streaked cheeks, lips trembling as he turned to the sound of the child.
He reached for the baby, hands shaking, and drew him close against his chest.
This time, he didn’t just hold him out of instinct — he held him with devotion, with a promise being etched into the marrow of his bones.
He kissed the baby’s head softly, his breath catching, voice no more than a whisper as it cracked under the weight of his words.
Kim Taehyung.
You weren’t born to carry this pain.
Kim Taehyung.
You weren’t born to be cursed… or to be blamed for the life she lost.
He closed his eyes, resting his forehead against the baby’s.
Kim Taehyung.
You were born to be cherished.
Kim Taehyung.
You were 𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙.
A trembling breath escaped him.
Kim Taehyung.
And I’ll make sure you are.
Kim Taehyung.
No matter what it takes… even if I have to give you every last piece of me.
He held the baby tighter, as if he could shield him from fate itself. His tears didn’t stop, but his hands no longer trembled.
Grief still clung to him, sharp and suffocating — but it no longer stood alone.
In its shadow bloomed something quiet, but unyielding.
But her heartbeat lived on in the child.
And now, Taehyung would carry them both.
But because he would never let this child feel alone in a world that had already taken too much.
