Raine sat in her room, staring at the untouched plate of food the staff had brought her. She couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, and couldn’t think straight. Damon’s warning from earlier played in her mind on repeat:
Don't trust anyone. Not even me
Her door creaked open, and the same sharp-featured woman stepped inside. Raine had learned her name was Lydia, one of Damon’s most trusted people. Lydia’s expression was as cold as ever, her eyes scanning the room before settling on Raine.
“Get up,” Lydia said briskly. “You’re needed downstairs.”
“For what?” Raine asked, her voice tired.
Lydia didn’t answer. She only gestured for Raine to follow.
Raine reluctantly stood, her legs feeling heavy as she trailed behind Lydia. The hallways seemed darker today, or maybe it was just her mood. Each step felt like she was walking deeper into a trap she couldn’t escape.
Lydia stopped in front of a heavy door Raine hadn’t seen before. She opened it, revealing a dimly lit room with a long table in the center. Damon was there, along with three other men Raine didn’t recognize.
“Come in,” Damon said, his voice calm but firm.
Raine hesitated but stepped inside. The men at the table all turned to look at her. Their stares were cold, assessing.
“Sit,” Damon said, gesturing to an empty chair.
She sat down, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
“This,” Damon began, gesturing to the men, “is a meeting. You’re here because I need you to listen. Understand the stakes.”
Raine frowned. “What stakes?”
One of the men, older with gray hair and a scar running down his cheek, leaned forward. “She doesn’t know, does she?” he said, his voice rough.
“She knows enough,” Damon replied, his tone sharp.
Raine felt her chest tighten. “What are you talking about?”
Damon’s gaze locked onto hers. “Your father’s debt, Miss Bennett, wasn’t just money. It was also a promise. A promise to stay loyal to me. He broke that promise, and now, you’re here to fix it.”
Her throat went dry. “What does that mean?”
“It means you don’t just owe me money,” Damon said, his voice cold. “You owe me loyalty. Obedience. If I tell you to do something, you do it. No questions asked.”
The weight of his words settled on her shoulders. She felt like she couldn’t breathe.
“What if I can’t?” she whispered.
Damon’s expression didn’t change. “Then you fail. And in my world, failure has consequences.”
Raine looked around the room, at the men watching her with interest. She was scared to death, but she refused to let them see it.
Damon leaned forward, his eyes piercing into hers. “Your first real task starts now. You’ll accompany Lydia to meet one of my clients. You’ll observe and do exactly as she says. Understand?”
“What kind of client?” Raine asked, her voice shaking.
Damon smirked. “Someone who owes me a favor. You’ll see soon enough.”
Lydia stood, motioning for Raine to follow.
Raine looked at Damon one last time. His expression was unreadable, but his words echoed in her mind: Failure has consequences.
As Lydia led her out of the room, Raine felt like she was walking into a nightmare.
