Chapter-5

The next morning, Raine woke up to a knock on her door. She barely slept, her mind replaying yesterday’s events over and over. The package, the man, Damon’s cold smirk—it was all too much.

The knock came again, louder this time.

“Miss Bennett,” a voice called. “Breakfast is ready. The boss wants you to join him.”

Raine hesitated before getting out of bed. She didn’t want to see Damon, but she didn’t have a choice. She quickly changed into the simple clothes left in her closet and followed the same woman who had escorted her before.

The dining room was massive, with a long table covered in silver platters of food. Damon was already seated at the head, sipping coffee as if everything in the world was perfectly fine.

“Good morning, Miss Bennett,” he said, barely looking up.

Raine swallowed hard. “Morning.”

“Sit,” he said, gesturing to the seat beside him.

She did as he asked, her hands resting awkwardly in her lap. She wasn’t hungry, but the smell of fresh pastries and coffee filled the air.

“You did well yesterday,” Damon said, cutting into a piece of toast. “Better than I expected.”

Raine frowned. “It wasn’t that hard. I just gave someone a box.”

Damon’s eyes flicked to hers, sharp and calculating. “You think it was simple? That’s naive. That man you handed the package to could’ve been an enemy. He could’ve been someone who wanted to hurt me—or you. And you’d never know until it was too late.”

Her stomach twisted. “Then why send me? Why not one of your men?”

“Because I needed to see if you could handle it,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “I needed to see if you could follow orders without asking too many questions.”

Raine’s hands clenched under the table. She wanted to argue, but she knew it was pointless.

“You’re scared,” Damon said, his tone softer now. “Good. Fear keeps people alive. But let me give you some advice, Miss Bennett.”

She looked at him, her chest tight.

“Don’t trust anyone in this house. Not the staff, not the men guarding the doors, and especially not me,” he said, his voice low and firm.

Her breath caught. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because you’re in my world now,” Damon said, his eyes locking onto hers. “And my world is dangerous. If you make the wrong move, you won’t survive.”

Raine felt a chill run down her spine. His words were clear, but they only made her more confused.

Before she could respond, Damon stood, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt. “Your tasks will get harder. Yesterday was a test. Today will be more... complicated.”

“What do you mean?” she asked quickly, her voice trembling.

“You’ll find out soon enough,” he said, walking toward the door. “Finish your breakfast. You’ll need your strength.”

The door closed behind him, leaving Raine alone with the untouched food in front of her.

She didn’t eat. Her appetite was gone. All she could think about were Damon’s words:

Don’t trust anyone. Not even me.
