Raine Bennett was tired. Her feet hurt, and her back ached. All she wanted was to go home, lie down on her tiny bed, and forget the world. The streets were dark, and the rain had left everything cold and wet. She pulled her jacket tighter around her.
Her apartment was just a few blocks away. It wasn’t much, but it was home. She hurried her steps, wanting to be inside before the strange silence of the night got to her.
Then she heard it—a car engine. It was low and steady, but it made her uneasy.
She turned her head and saw it. A black car. Shiny, expensive, and out of place. She didn’t know why, but it scared her. The car scared her to death.
Raine’s heart began to race. She walked faster, her hands gripping her bag tightly. The car started moving, following her at a slow, steady pace.
She was scared to death. She tried to tell herself it was nothing, just someone driving home, but the car didn’t pass her. It stayed behind her, crawling forward like it was watching her.
Her apartment was close. She just needed to get inside. She was so scared she didn’t notice how her hands were shaking.
The car stopped. The car door opened. Two men stepped out.
“Miss Bennett,” one of them said, his voice calm but firm. “You need to come with us.”
Raine froze. Her heart pounded so hard she thought it would burst. She was scared to death. “Who are you? What do you want?”
“Don’t make this difficult,” the man said, stepping closer. “We have orders.”
She turned to run, but before she could take a step, one of them grabbed her arm. His grip was like steel.
“Let me go!” she screamed, struggling against him. She was scared to death, but no one came to help her.
The man didn’t let go. He dragged her to the car and pushed her inside. The door slammed shut, and the car sped off.
Raine sat frozen, her heart pounding. She didn’t know who they were or where they were taking her. All she knew was that she was scared to death.
The car drove through a pair of tall iron gates and stopped in front of a massive mansion. The building was dark and cold, and it looked like the kind of place where bad things happened.
The men opened the car door and pulled her out. She didn’t fight this time. She was too scared to fight.
They led her into the mansion. The inside was huge and perfect, but it didn’t feel safe. It felt cold, like the walls were watching her.
The men brought her to a large room. A man was sitting behind a desk. He looked up as she walked in, and Raine felt her stomach drop.
He was tall and sharp, with piercing blue eyes and an expression that didn’t care about anyone or anything. His presence filled the room, and it scared her to death.
“Miss Bennett,” he said, his voice calm but cold. “Sit down.”
Raine didn’t move. “Who are you? Why am I here?”
“I’m Damon Voss,” he said. “And you’re here because of your father.”
Her heart sank. “My father? I haven’t seen him in years! He left us!”
Damon leaned back in his chair, his blue eyes never leaving hers. “Yes, he left. But before he did, he borrowed a lot of money from me. Money he never paid back.”
Raine shook her head. “I didn’t know about that! I have nothing to do with him!”
Damon stood, his tall frame towering over her. “You’re going to repay his debt,” he said, his voice firm.
Raine felt her knees weaken. She was scared to death. “I don’t have that kind of money! I can barely pay my rent!”
“You don’t need money,” Damon said, stepping closer. “You’ll work for me until the debt is paid.”
“Work for you? Doing what?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” he said. His voice was calm, but his words sent chills down her spine. “For now, you’ll stay here. You don’t have a choice.”
She felt trapped. She was scared to death. She wanted to run, but there was nowhere to go.
“The sooner you accept this, the easier it will be,” Damon said, his voice cold and final. “This is your new life, Miss Bennett.”
Raine stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn’t know how she’d get out of this, but one thing was clear—her life would never be the same.
