Beneath The Veil of Deception 4

Episode 4: A Brewing Conflict He Cannot Avoid.
Minister: It seems so easy for her, doesn’t it? Marrying a man she was not supposed to. I am sure she is rather pleased with the way things turned out. After all, who would not want to marry a Duke?
Zander came to a halt, a storm brewing within him. He could endure the blows, the mockery—they were nothing compared to the weight he carried. Why shouldn't he? This position belonged to his brother, Rafael, the rightful Duke of Elodour. Trained from childhood to wield power and command respect, Rafael was born for this role.
However, he has zero tolerance for anyone who shows disrespect toward Jacinth.
Zander turned back slowly, his eyes narrowing as he approached the minister with an unsettling calmness. Without a word, he grabbed the minister by the collar, pulling him closer with deliberate precision. The minister’s breath hitched slightly, but Zander’s grip wasn’t tight—it was a warning.

You will not speak of her that way again.
Zander’s voice was soft, almost serene, but the threat in his tone was unmistakable.
He let go of the collar and took a step back, his gaze cold and unflinching.

I suggest you remember who holds the power in this room. Do not test me again. Do you understand?
Minister: How dare you, Zander Von Edrington!
The Minister's face turned a deep shade of crimson, a vivid sign of his mounting rage. He shot up from his seat, the chair skidding backward with a harsh scrape against the floor. Fury and humiliation evident in his face.
Minister: I have served this Kingdom longer than you have been alive and—
Zander Von Edrington

Do. You. Understand.
Zander's eyes blazed with something that made the Minister flinch. He looked away.
. . .
Marco spun on his heel, seizing his elbow with a firm grip. His voice shot up in frustration as they stepped outside the building.

Zander, you have lost it! The man is twice your age, and he was not lying when he said he had been serving the kingdom longer than you are breathing! You cannot offend him!
Zander, adjusting his gloves, didn’t even look up.
Zander Von Edrington

Let him be offended.
Marco stopped pacing and turned to face him, his expression a mix of disbelief and frustration.

Zander, you cannot afford to be so careless. He has allies—other noble families who will rally behind him. The moment you make him your enemy, it is not just him you are going to have to contend with. There are people who will use this against you, and we cannot afford to make such a move now, not when you are still establishing your rule. It is a Kingdom, not a hospital, Zander!
Zander finally lifted his gaze, meeting Marco’s eyes with his own frustration, clenching his jaw.

He has been hurling criticisms at me since the moment I walked into the court, and I did not utter a word! Did you not hear how he talked about Jacinth? I can put up with a lot, but I cannot stand anyone insulting her!
Marco sighed.
Marco Roosevelt

My apologies. I do understand that it was an extreme disrespect to the Duchess. But you could have handled it better.
As Zander remains in silence, Marco’s expression shifts, his eyes understanding. He gently presses his shoulders.

You love her, don't you?
Zander's Adam's apple bobs as he looks away.

We are not having this conversation again.
He gets into the carriage.

You are expected to go to the merchandise and report to me about it by evening. I am leaving for the eastern hotel.
Marco sighed, clearly exasperated, but he knew that arguing further would be futile. He turned away, muttering under his breath.

As Primrose departed, Lysandra carefully set the cup down. She then looked up at her elder daughter, her gaze conveying affection, however, not more than the firm demeanor she consistently upholds within the household.
Mother: In Edrington's, there is a longstanding tradition that the bride does not return to her father's home until one week following the wedding ceremony. Are you not aware, Jacinth?
