Episode 11

Pov.: Luka

I was lying on my bed discussing various matters with my men, and of course, I wanted revenge on that trash that had ambushed me, so I sent my men out with a plan to kill them all. Once everyone had left, I turned to Vladimir, who was the only one not going.

"I want you to investigate that doctor who treated me," I commanded. "It's impossible that she is my wife."

"My lord," he said seriously, "I will do so immediately, but there is something else I must inform you of."

"What is it?"

"Do you know Helen Norvicova?"

"Yes, she's one of the top investigators and a subordinate of my mother's, but why do you ask?" I inquired, not understanding what he was getting at.

"I've just seen her in this hospital. I don't know, but it's possible that your mother has found out you're here."

"Then ask her!" I exclaimed angrily, hating the idea of my mother keeping tabs on me.

"I'm sorry, my lord, but I can't. Every time I try to approach, she evades me, and I can't find her."

"What is one of my mother's subordinates, who was supposed to be on vacation, doing in this hospital now?" I wondered to myself. "I need to speak to my mother as soon as possible to find out what's going on."

"Our men also report that some investigators and subordinates of your father are currently in the empire."

"From my father? Are you certain?" I asked, surprised since that caught my attention. My mother's involvement didn't surprise me because she's always concerned about me, but my father would only deploy his subordinates if something very important and urgent was happening.

"Investigate what's going on. All of this is very strange."

"Right away, sir," he said and left immediately.

Alone in the hospital room, I dwelled for a long time on the woman who had occupied my mind for the past year, persistently there for some unknown reason.

"Where are you? Why can't I find you still?" I pondered, unable to find an answer to those questions.

"Hello, good afternoon," a female voice said from the door.

As I turned around, I saw her. It was her, my wife. I was about to ask where she had been during the last year and how she found out I was in the hospital, but when I blinked, I realized my mistake. It wasn't my wife but my doctor standing before me.

"Doctor, why are you here?" I asked, confused.

"I've come to see how my problematic patient is doing," she said with a smile and entered my room.

"Problematic?" I was perplexed by her reference.

"Didn't they tell you?" she asked. "Your friend struck one of my nurses, and your men prevented my team from attending to you when you first arrived. I had to put my foot down to get on with work."

"They didn't tell me anything."

"That's understandable. They were very worried about you. It seems you're someone they care for deeply," she replied.

"They're my brothers," I said with a smile.

"It's good to know that. I wish I could find even one person who cares about me half as much as they do for you," she said, a hint of sadness in her voice.

"Are you alright?" I asked, noticing the tinge of sadness.

"I am," she said, her smile returning as if nothing had happened.

She stepped even closer to check on me, and that's when I noticed that she wore a ring quite similar to mine.

"That ring?" I inquired, seeing her tense up.

"It was a gift," she replied.

"It must be from someone very important to you. You haven't taken it off, not even for work," I said, trying to learn more about the giver.

"It's a beautiful ring, and it feels like it hides many secrets," she observed, staring at it. "The crown shape makes me feel like a queen," she added, not taking her eyes off the ring and smiling.

"You are a queen," I thought to myself.

When she finished checking me, she reported I was doing well, thanks to the medications and regenerative magic. She mentioned it was time for me to start walking a little, saying it would do me good.

"Miss, are you a doctor or a nurse?" I asked, noting the extent of care she provided.

"I'm both, a nurse and a doctor," she said proudly.

"I see. Thank you very much for taking care of me and dealing with my men. They might seem intimidating, but they're good people," I said, and she nodded.

"I understand, but I would appreciate it, and it would make me very happy if your friend offers a sincere apology to my nurse, Marga, who was his victim."

"He will," I said with a smile, watching her leave.

Alone again, I pondered the possibility that my friend was right about the wedding ring being very similar to mine, but still, I couldn't believe she was my wife. I remembered her – her hair black as night and eyes blue, cold as ice; this woman, however, was warm-hearted, with auburn hair and bright green eyes, nothing like the woman from the casino.

Getting up slowly from my bed, I did as the doctor suggested and started to walk a bit until I grew tired and stopped to rest. That's when I encountered Vladimir and my men, who approached me anxiously.

"Sir, what are you doing here? You should be resting in your room," Vladimir said.

"The doctor checked on me while you were away and said I could walk a little, but to be careful."

"Let's return to the room, sir," one of my men suggested.

"Of course, we'll go back, and we need to talk," I said with a furrowed brow, making them tense up.

They helped me back to my feet and walked with me to the room. Once there, I lay back down in bed and looked at them all.

"I've just found out what you did. How could you dare?" I asked, clearly upset.

"We don't understand what you're referring to, sir," one of my men said.

"I'm referring to the commotion you caused in this hospital when they brought me here. How could you do such a thing? You disappoint me, and above all, you Vlad, how could you strike a nurse? She was just doing her job."

"When we arrived, they put you on a stretcher and took you away from us," he explained.

"They did that to treat me. Your duty at that time was to be concerned about me. They had to focus on saving me, not dealing with you."

"We didn't know, and when we saw so many people trying to enter the room where you were, we stopped them, thinking they would harm you."

"They were trying to save my life. What happened with the girl that you acted that way?" I asked, looking him in the eye.

"She approached us to let her pass, she became aggressive, so I grabbed her hair so she wouldn't be a nuisance."

"Oh, Vladimir, she was doing her job, trying to reason with you, but you attacked her," I said, angered. "You better go find that nurse and apologize for what you did. You never raise your hand against a woman, under no circumstances. Did you understand?"

"Yes, sir," he said, head bowed.

"Go apologize to her right now!" I ordered, and he ran off. "And you all as well! You're going to find everyone who attended to me and apologize for your behavior. If need be, you will apologize to the entire hospital," I declared, and they also departed.

I may be a mobster and killer, but what my men did was wrong. I didn't teach them to act like that, and they must apologize for all the harm they caused when they brought me here.

Hours passed until my men and Vlad returned, apparently taking my order of "apologize to the entire hospital if necessary" seriously.

When they arrived, they all sat and informed me they had followed the order, then sat on the floor of the room to rest.

A few minutes passed when I heard hurried footsteps, as if someone was running. The door burst open, and all my men went on alert but lowered their weapons upon seeing the intruder was Helen. I looked at her, and she seemed very agitated.

"What's going on, Helen?" I asked, and as she caught her breath, she looked at me with concern.

"Amy's been kidnapped!" she exclaimed, and I didn't understand why she was telling me.
