Episode 9

POV: Amy

I dashed to reach the scene where the man lay, where upon my arrival I found paramedics doing everything they could to save him. The young medic who was performing CPR was visibly exhausted, yet unwilling to cease his resuscitation efforts. As soon as I reached them, I insisted the weary medic step aside to rest. Taking his place, I mounted over the man, replacing the medic, and soon we managed to stabilize him.

"Come on, we need to get him into the OR immediately!" I exclaimed as we entered the elevator.

Reaching the OR, I met with resistance as it appeared no one wanted to help; none of the staff on the floor would enter the surgery room, which infuriated me. Nevertheless, I took a deep breath, silently vowing to report them all, and led the assisting nurses I had at the time into the OR. We hastily prepared and began the surgery, extracting five bullets from his body, astonished that he had remained alive.

Hours later, the surgery ended, and we moved the patient to a room for recovery. While the nurses transported him, I went to the waiting room where a group of anxious men awaited news. As I approached, they swarmed me with questions, giving me no chance to answer. Minutes later, I managed to quiet them down to speak.

"The patient is stable; he's out of surgery. We've successfully removed all the bullets. He's now resting but will be under observation for a while."

"Can we see him?" one of them asked.

"Not just yet, as he's just come out of surgery. You should call his parents to be with him."

"The gentleman's parents are not in the realm; they live far from here," replied the man who had collected the patient's belongings.

"Did you complete all the paperwork for his admission?" I inquired.

"Yes, it's all been taken care of," they said in unison.

"Then you should get some rest. Come back tomorrow to see him."

"We won't leave from here; we'll stay beside our lord. Just tell us which room he's in," they pleaded. I let out a weary sigh, knowing they wouldn't relent.

"He's in room 1036. He's under anesthesia effects. I'll check on him later. You cannot enter the room, but you can watch through the window."

"Thank you, doctor," they said, visibly more relaxed.

I left the area to continue my rounds; I performed another lengthy operation, and afterwards, I took a break before stopping by the man's room.

Arriving there, I saw all the men seated outside the room, some asleep, some half-awake, with the sole alert man being the one who had attacked my friend and colleague. I entered the room and took a moment to observe the patient; he was strikingly attractive, and his face seemed familiar, but I couldn't place him. Puzzled, I checked on him before exiting to inform his companions he was doing well. I allowed them into the room but warned them to remain quiet and to press the blue button by the bed if he awoke. Then, I left them and made my way to the doctors' lounge on the floor, fetched a cigar from my locker, and stepped outside to smoke, noting the dawn and realizing I hadn't slept a wink. I sighed, lit the cigar, and settled in to enjoy it and calm my nerves.

POV: Luka

A year had passed since I had wed a mystery woman, whom I'd searched for fervently, but to no avail. She eluded me – as though I had married a phantom, but that was impossible. From the moment I learned of my marriage, I found myself haunted by her image – those deep blue eyes and black hair had captivated me, though I fought against admitting it; I couldn't fall for a woman and wouldn't allow it.

Curiosity about my unseen wedding led me to watch the video, where the glances we shared spoke of love; it seemed we were truly enamored. Throughout the year, I remained faithful to our marriage, a real bond that deserved respect, but each time I thought of being with another woman, her image stopped me.

Questions from colleagues about what was troubling me led to anger when thoughts of my wife with another man crept into my mind. I couldn't bear the thought of her being unfaithful, yet my own ignorance about her was maddening. I sent men in search of her, desperation growing with each failed attempt. I longed to return to Gravas to hunt for her myself, but had resolved never to set foot there again.

As time passed, we secured an auspicious deal, though the location of its execution was unknown to me until my father compelled me to travel. Upon meeting with new contacts, we were ambushed, and amidst the aftermath, I realized I was injured, collapsing and losing consciousness immediately, pondering if I'd die without knowing my wife.

Upon awakening, I found myself in a hospital bed surrounded by tubes. My surroundings were a blur, save for my men sleeping in the room. Trying to move, I was stopped by my best friend, who leaned in close.

"My lord, we've brought you to a hospital," he informed me.

"How could you?" I asked, annoyed with them all, despite feeling weak.

"You were gravely injured, and it was the closest help. You could have died," he said with deep sadness.

"There's no excuse," I retorted.

"By the way, my lord, I think..." He didn't finish his thought when suddenly interrupted.

"Hello, good morning," the voice of a woman rang through. My eyes flicked to the door to see a beautiful woman in white coat and blue attire.

Seeing her, my heart raced, and a spark surged through me – an unknown sensation, as she was a stranger to me.

"She's beautiful, but she doesn't compare to my wife," I thought to myself.

"Doctor, he's awake," my friend announced with glee.

"That's perfect," she replied, smiling, approaching me. "Any pain upon waking?" she asked, her gaze locked on mine.

"Who are you?" I asked, unable to place her.

"How rude of me; I've failed to introduce myself properly," she chastised herself. "I'm Amy – your doctor, and the surgeon that treated and operated on you upon arrival," she answered. "So, any pain?"

"No, none at all," I replied.

"Don't lie to me, sir," she said with a knowing smile.

"I feel no pain, although there's a slight discomfort in my chest," I admitted.

"That's better. You shouldn't lie to me."

After she had checked on me, Amy bid farewell to all and left the room. Once she was gone, I fixated on my friend, who'd watched her closely and continued to do so until she vanished.

"If you fancy her, find out who she is and go win her over," I chuckled; my friend always had an eye for attractive women.

"I wouldn't dare, my lord," he replied.

"She's a pretty young lady," I said, smiling.

"It's not that, my lord, it's...," he trailed off, his head hanging low.

"What's going on?" I pressed, sensing his hesitance.

"I strongly suspect she's your wife, sir," he said point-blank.

"That's impossible!" I exclaimed, flustered. "She's vastly different from the woman I married, in every way. They look nothing alike."

"I understand, Luka, but she wears a ring that matches the one you have," he explained.

"I cannot believe it; she's not my wife!" I declared emphatically. "Let's end this discussion."
