Chapter 8 - The Strange Girl
When I first saw her, I wondered how such a strange girl could even smile at this environment.
She was in an unknown land, forced to learn magic in order to return to her world. Even I would be confused to such a degree where I wouldn’t know what to think or trust.
However, she’s different. Perhaps she feels safe in a library where no one would go to. Maybe she feels safe in a world comprised of words. That might be her escape. Reading.
For some reason, something compelled me to go in there and keep her company but I decided against the idea. She’s probably terrified of us. Of devils.
Just as I was about to leave, I heard her moving. I watched as she independently put the book back in its rightful place despite the library being enchanted to do that automatically.
Chester likes order and chaos. Take his office/library. His desk is a mess yet the books are all sorted and aligned on their shelves.
Then, I watched as she slowly climbed up the ladder. She’s cautious, that’s always good to see. She might not be so foolish after all.
However, reaching the place that she wanted, she took out the book on Demon Law, not thinking that it was going to be so heavy.
I watched as she fumbled and then, my eyes tensed once her hand left the railing. I watched as she slowly fell and I couldn’t remain hidden anymore.
I put out my hand, casting a hover spell right under her. Thanks to my quick thinking, she was saved.
I walked towards her and noticed how her eyes had shut closed and her hands were desperately griping onto the book.
She was frightened but didn’t scream. Then, she gently landed into my arms and I soon realised... she is as light as a feather.
She then opened her eyes and I saw them. Two beautiful jewels in guise of eyes.
Cal Bentley
Are humans all this foolish?
I had to speak to her first yet somehow, I couldn’t bring myself to introduce.
Amy Angel
That isn't very nice, you know.
So, she’s a spiteful thing. She appears to be huffing. To me, the heir to one of the most powerful Devil clans in this realm. She amuses me.
Cal Bentley
I'm a Devil. What else do you expect?
The corners of her mouth winded upwards, producing the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
Amy Angel
You aren't rude. You would have let me fall if you were rude. Anyway, thank you for saving me.
Her smile was too radiant, too bright yet somehow, I couldn’t help but look at it.
I gently set her onto the ground, minding that she didn’t topple over from the shock. I then snatched the culprit of her fall from her hands. Of course, it’s boring literature. She’d get along with Percy just fine.
Cal Bentley
Demon Law... how positively boring.
She then chuckled yet again, making something inside of me stir yet again.
Amy Angel
I find all new things fascinating. Especially your language, it shares many common similarities with mine.
She then proceeded to gently removed the book from my hands. Her fingertips brushed past mine, making me feel a quick yet lingering warmth.
Instead of giving me a straight answer, she shot me a mysterious smile and slowly walked back towards her seat.
Cal Bentley
You learnt our language? Already?
What was that just now? Did she let me have the last word of the conversation?
She didn’t speak to me, caring about who I was and what rank I might be. She didn’t suck up to me just because of my birth right.
Being around her... I felt relaxed. I didn’t need to pretend to be anyone except for myself.
