Chapter 71

"My family was destroyed by women," Elsa said at last.

Azalea didn't interrupt. She simply listened, fully present.

"From my grandfather... all the way to my father," Elsa continued, her voice growing heavy. "They all fell for village women who looked innocent."

Azalea held her breath.

"They came with naive faces and gentle words, but they destroyed everything," Elsa added. Her eyes began to glisten, her voice weakening. "I saw it myself — how marriages fell apart, how my mother cried every night."

The room fell silent. Only the faint sound of crickets from outside seeped through the cracks of the stillness.

"Since then, I've been afraid," she whispered. "Afraid it would happen again."

Azalea looked at her deeply. A pang of sadness touched her own heart, even though the wound was not hers.

"So when I found out you were from a village..." Elsa's voice shrank until it nearly disappeared.

Azalea nodded slowly. "I understand now." She shifted slightly closer, narrowing the distance that had felt so vast for so long. "Not everyone is the same, Mom," she said gently.

Elsa looked at her.

"I might be from a village," Azalea continued softly, "but I didn't come to ruin anyone."

Elsa's tears fell without restraint.

"I know you must have felt such deep pain," Azalea added, her voice warm. "But not everyone who looks the same has the same heart."

Elsa gripped Azalea's hand. The hold was warm and tight. As though she never wanted to let go again. "Forgive me," she whispered.

Azalea returned the grip without hesitation. "Of course, Mom."

There were no loud sobs. No dramatic embrace. But within that clasped grip was genuine acceptance. Understanding that had finally found its shape. And a relationship slowly healing from prejudice.

The night grew late without either of them noticing. Conversation flowed easily — about a past that had once felt crushing, about hopes beginning to bloom, and about small things that occasionally drew quiet laughter in the stillness.
