The Light

He didn’t notice when she became his safe place.
Her presence shifted something in him. He found himself waiting for her laughter, her gentle teasing, the way she carried warmth without even trying. One morning, he caught himself looking forward to seeing her—and it terrified him. But beneath the fear was something else. Relief.
It was in the little things that he noticed the change. Not sudden, not loud—just quiet shifts that slipped past his defenses until they were simply there.
The way his mornings felt incomplete without her “hi.” The way he started looking for her in the crowd, even when he pretended he wasn’t. The way her laughter seemed to cut through the heaviness in his chest, leaving behind something lighter.
He hated it at first—the realization that she mattered. Because people who mattered had the power to hurt. And hurt was something he had promised himself he’d never allow again.
Yet here he was.
One morning, before he could catch himself, the words slipped out.

“Good morning,” he said quietly, almost too low to hear.

She blinked in surprise, then grinned as though he’d given her something precious. “Well, good morning to you too.”
He looked away, pretending it was nothing, but his ears burned.
Later that evening, she found him at the library, slouched over his notebook, his mind drowning in thoughts he didn’t want to name. She sat down across from him, no words, no questions—just presence.

After a while, she tilted her head. “You look heavy today.”

He stiffened. “Because I am.”

Her smile was soft, patient. “Then let me carry a little of it.”
He stared at her, at the quiet sincerity in her eyes. He didn’t know what to say, so he said nothing. But his silence wasn’t rejection this time. It was… gratitude.
And maybe, just maybe, a flicker of something he couldn’t admit yet.
When they walked home, he no longer trailed behind. He walked beside her.
And while walking to home, in the quiet where his walls usually stood.

He admitted softly, “I don’t know how to trust anymore.”
She didn’t rush to reassure him. She didn’t tell him to try harder.

She just looked at him with calm eyes and said, “Then don’t force it. Just… let me stay.”
And for the first time in years, he felt like maybe staying was possible.
That night, lying awake, he realized something that shook him. When the world grew too loud, when the weight grew too much, she was the first person he thought of
He didn’t notice when it happened. Didn’t notice when she became the light in the corner of his darkness.
But she had. And the thought both terrified him… and set him free.
