The sound of heels echoed through the marble hallway as Elena adjusted the files in her arm. She had just finished an exhausting meeting, her mind already on tomorrow’s agenda—until she froze at the sight in her office.
He was there.
Leaning casually in her chair, one leg crossed over the other, jacket draped across the armrest like he owned the place.
“Are you lost?” Elena asked, tone calm but sharp as glass.
Lorenzo’s lips curled into that maddening half-smirk. “I was waiting for you.”
Her jaw tightened. “This is a restricted space. You can’t just—”
“I can,” he cut her off smoothly. “I just did.”
She dropped the files on her desk with deliberate calm. “Mafia boss or not, you don’t get to walk into my office like it’s your playground.”
He tilted his head, studying her, eyes lingering too long. “Everything becomes mine eventually. Offices… companies…” His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before rising again. “…people.”
Her pulse skipped, but her voice stayed steady. “Then you’ll be disappointed. I’m not a thing you can buy, own, or threaten into submission.”
He chuckled low, standing, closing the distance slowly. “You say that, but your eyes—” he leaned slightly closer, enough that she caught the faint scent of his cologne—“they betray you every time. They hesitate.”
Elena’s hand curled around the edge of her desk. “You’re imagining things.”
“Am I?” His smirk deepened. “You pretend not to notice me, but you do. Every single time I enter a room, you stiffen. You measure your words. You’re not indifferent, Elena. You’re cautious. And I like that. It means you’re hiding something worth finding.”
Her chest tightened. He was circling too close to the truth.
“Or maybe,” she said, lifting her chin, “I’m simply tolerating a man who thinks obsession is charm.”
Lorenzo’s eyes darkened, the smirk fading into something sharper. “Obsession is honest. At least I don’t lie about what I want.”
“And what exactly do you want?” she asked, voice low.
His reply was immediate. “You.”
The word hung in the air, heavy and dangerous.
Elena’s breath caught, but she forced a mocking smile. “You want a challenge, Lorenzo. That’s all this is. You see someone who won’t bow, and it excites you.”
“Wrong.” He moved closer, his shadow merging with hers. “It’s not the challenge. It’s you. The way you walk into rooms like you own them. The way you pretend control is armor. The way you guard yourself, like there’s something precious behind those walls. I want it all.”
Her heartbeat thundered in her chest. She took a step back, regaining space. “Then you’ll keep wanting. Because I don’t break, and I don’t bend.”
He chuckled, eyes glinting. “We’ll see. Everyone has a breaking point, Elena. And I intend to find yours.”
Their gazes locked, silence thickening, words unspoken pressing between them. Finally, she forced herself to turn away, gathering her files again.
“This conversation is over,” she said firmly.
But his voice followed, low and certain, as he moved toward the door. “No, Elena. This is only the beginning.”
The door shut behind him, leaving her office too quiet, too heavy. She leaned against her desk, exhaling slowly, fingers trembling before she forced them still!
He wanted to break her...
But the most dangerous part was the whisper inside her that wondered if she wanted to let him try!!
