The next morning

I woke up to silence. Not the warm kind, but the heavy, suffocating kind that presses down on your chest until you can’t breathe.

For a moment, I forgot where I was Wait a minute did I fainted last night. The unfamiliar ceiling, the too-soft sheets, the faint scent of expensive cologne clinging to the air—it all screamed not home.

And then it hit me. Last night. The vows. The ring. The way Theo’s hand gripped mine, forcing the words past my lips.

I wasn’t Ellis Morris anymore. I was Ellis Anderson.

My stomach twisted. I pushed myself up, half-expecting this nightmare to dissolve, but instead my eyes landed on him.

Theo. Sitting in an armchair across the room, calm, collected, watching me like he’d been waiting for me to wake up.

I froze. His eyes met mine, and the silence between us thickened until I wanted to claw at it.

It slipped out before I could stop myself. The question that had been burning holes in my chest since this began.

Theo leaned back slightly, crossing one leg over the other, unbothered.

He didn’t answer immediately. His silence was louder than words, and my heart hammered against my ribs.

My breath caught in my throat. So that was it. I wasn’t a husband sorry his damn wife. I was a weapon. A punishment.

But then—why the way he looked at me? Why that unsettling patience, as if he wasn’t in a rush to break me, but to… keep me?

A thousand questions screamed in my head: Would he hurt me? Would he cage me? Or worse—would he make me depend on him?

I wanted to demand answers, to claw back some control, but my voice betrayed me.

Theo’s lips curved into that slow, psychotic smile that made my blood run cold.
