The ballroom buzzed with laughter and clinking glasses, but to me, it felt like a battlefield. Because on one end of the room stood my brother, and across from him — Theo Anderson.

Everyone pretended not to notice, but all eyes flicked back to them when they thought no one was looking. The rivalry wasn’t new—it had been boiling for years. Business deals, political influence, reputation. If my brother took one step forward, Theo took two. If Theo claimed a victory, my brother burned the ground beneath him.

But tonight… it was worse

Their smiles were thin, sharp, brittle. A mask for the war simmering beneath.

*coolly, swirling his drink* Congratulations. I hear you secured the whitmore contract

A few men chuckled awkwardly. The tension was thick, crawling into every corner of the room.

*voice dropping, almost a growl* Cheating? Or being smart enough to move before you even step onto the board?

I shifted uncomfortably, wishing I could vanish into the wallpaper. My brother thrived on this, but Theo… there was something dangerous about the way he stood there. Still. Composed. Like a predator deciding when to strike.

The words cut through the air like glass shattering. The small crowd around them went silent. All eyes were on the two men, circling each other like wolves.

And then Theo’s gaze flicked—just for a second—toward me.

My chest tightened.

*soft, venomous* You talk about protecting what’s yours… yet you’re blind to see the cracks right beside you

*interrupting, smile chilling* You’ve taken plenty from me. Deals. Clients. Respect.

Maybe it’s time I take something from you. Something you’ll never.....win back

The words weren’t shouted. They didn’t need to be. They slithered into the air, heavy, suffocating, final.

My brother’s jaw clenched, eyes burning into Theo’s. For once, he didn’t fire back.

And me? I froze. My stomach churned. I didn’t even understand what Theo meant… but the way he said it—so certain, so calm—made my skin crawl.

I thought it was just another threat. Another game. What I didn’t know that night, under those glittering chandeliers, Theo Anderson had already chosen his next move.

I didn’t know then what he meant. But the way my brother’s jaw clenched, the way Theo’s eyes lingered for a fraction of a second on me before sliding away— that was the night the seed was planted.

And two months later, it bloomed into the cage I couldn’t escape.

*smirk* Stole? No, Anderson. I outplayed you. Don’t confuse my skill with your failure

A murmur of amusement rippled through the nearby crowd, but it died quickly when Theo’s eyes swept the room. His presence had weight. He didn’t need to raise his voice—he only needed to exist, and people went silent

*laughing, but sharp* You? You’re a shadow. Always chasing. Always behind. That’s where you’ll stay—second place, forever

His words were meant to humiliate, but they didn’t land the way he thought. Theo didn’t flinch. He just smiled—that calm, unsettling smile that made my stomach twist.

Second place? Careful. Empires fall, not because of the enemies outside… but because of the cracks inside

The silence after Theo’s words was unbearable. Even the orchestra seemed to hesitate, notes faltering before picking up again like nothing had happened. But everyone was listening. Watching. Waiting.

My brother’s jaw tightened. He wouldn’t let Theo walk away with the upper hand. Not here. Not in front of an audience.

My brother straightened, feeding off the moment, certain he had put Theo back in his place

But Theo didn’t flinch. He just tilted his glass, studying the wine as if none of this mattered. And then… he looked up. Straight at my brother. Straight through him.

Careful Pride has a nasty habit of blinding men right before they lose everything

The words weren’t loud. But somehow, I swear every person in that ballroom heard them.

His smile calm, unsettling, psychotic in its certainty

My brother clenched his fists, but he didn’t chase him. He couldn’t.
