It was my second day at work, and I was still nervous. I stood in the elevator lobby holding a cup of coffee, trying to calm my shaking hands. I pressed the button for the elevator and kept telling myself to relax.
The doors opened, and I stepped inside, pressing “15.” The elevator was quiet until it stopped again.
The doors slid open, and my heart skipped a beat. Steave Morris walked in. Our CEO. The man everyone whispered about—strict, cold, and impossible to impress.
He was tall, dressed in a perfect dark suit, with an expression that gave nothing away. His presence filled the small space, and suddenly I felt like I couldn’t move. I kept my eyes on the floor, but in the shiny elevator walls, I saw his reflection… and his eyes met mine.
The ride felt endless. I prayed I wouldn’t spill my coffee. Then, just before we reached my floor, he spoke in a deep, steady voice.
“Fifteenth floor.”
I nodded quickly, but before I could step out, he said something that made me freeze.
“I read your presentation.”
My heart pounded. He read it?
“Not bad,” he added simply, glancing at the papers in my hand.
“Thank you, sir,” I managed to say, hoping my voice didn’t crack.
He stepped out first, but before leaving through the glass doors, he looked back.
“Good luck today, Ms. Pollad.”
Hearing my name in his voice felt strange—sharp yet warm.
I walked to my desk, still replaying his words in my head, when a young assistant stopped beside me.
“Ms. Pollad? Mr. Morris would like to see you in his office.”
My stomach tightened. Already? Did I do something wrong?
I followed the assistant down the long hallway to the corner office with tall glass walls and a sweeping view of Seoul. Inside, Steave Morris stood by his desk, hands in his pockets. He motioned for me to sit.
“I like to meet every new employee personally,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “It’s important for me to know the people who work here—and for them to know me.”
I nodded, feeling a little more at ease. “That’s… very thoughtful of you, sir.”
He leaned back in his chair. “This company is only as strong as its people. My job is to make sure you have what you need to do your best work.”
It wasn’t what I expected at all. The man everyone feared was… actually kind? Direct, yes, but there was a warmth in his words.
“I’ll be watching your progress, Ms. Pollad,” he said with the hint of a smile. “Welcome to the team.”
“Thank you, Mr. Morris,” I replied, this time with more confidence.
When I stepped out of his office, I saw Miya walking toward the break area. She waved at me. “Hey, you survived your second day so far,” she teased.
I grinned. “You’ll never guess who I just talked to.”
Her eyes went wide. “No. Don’t tell me—”
“Yes. The CEO himself.”
Miya almost dropped her coffee. “What?! What happened? Did he yell? Did he fire you already?”
I laughed. “No! He actually invited me into his office. Said he likes to meet all the new employees.”
“That’s… not scary?” she asked, still looking doubtful.
“Not at all. He was serious, but… nice. He told me the company is only as strong as its people. Honestly, I think he really cares about the staff.”
Miya raised her eyebrows. “Wow. Maybe the rumors are wrong.”
“Maybe,” I said with a smile. “Or maybe he’s just different when you actually meet him.”😉
