Chapter 3

Kael stepped out of the bathroom in one of his silk shirts and joggers, hair damp, face fresh.

He walked straight into the kitchen—didn’t even hesitate.

Wrapped his arms around his grandma from behind.

Kael Ravencourt

(mock dramatic) I missed your cooking. And your yelling. And the smell of this weird soup.

Kael's grandma

(startled) Kael! You scared me!

Kael Ravencourt

You’re holding a knife. You’ll survive.

Kael's grandma

(elbowing him lightly) Go sit down, you brat.

Kael Ravencourt

(resting his chin on her shoulder) You’re so soft for someone so violent.

Kael's grandma

(smirking) And you’re sweet for someone so reckless.

Kael Ravencourt

Don’t tell anyone. It’ll ruin my image.

His phone buzzed on the table. Again.

Dad.

Kael didn't look.

Didn’t answer.

Just tapped it to silent.

Again.

And again.

Kael's grandma

(side-eyeing) You’re ignoring your father?

Kael Ravencourt

(grinning) Of course. He needs the experience.

Kael's grandma

You’re such a handful.

Kael Ravencourt

(sitting on the counter, popping a grape) And yet you still feed me. Love is tragic.

She rolled her eyes but smiled anyway.

He could tell she missed him.

Even if she wouldn’t say it.

The rest of the day passed slow.

Kael napped.

Wandered the garden.

Teased her about the neighbor’s ugly dog.

Picked at dinner before it was even ready.

But by evening, the breeze shifted.

Cold.

Sharp.

Whispers in the trees.

He looked out the window.

Darkness creeping in like a dare.

Silence.

No rules.

His favorite.

Kael Ravencourt

(quiet to himself) Perfect night.

The Ducati waited by the fence.

He slipped out the back door.

Didn’t even leave a note.

Helmet on.

Heart calm.

It wasn’t recklessness.

It was ritual.
