She muttered, clenching her fists so tightly her nails dug into her palms.
She started hitting her thigh with the side of her fist — once, twice, again.

Her voice trembled, but she kept repeating it — like a chant, like armor. Her breath turned shaky, but her hands didn’t stop.
Something inside her was clawing its way up. Something she didn’t want to face.
Something that had lived in the dark corners of her past, and was now knocking again.
The more she tried to suppress it, the louder it echoed in her chest.

She hit her thigh again, harder this time, as if trying to beat the memory back down.
Tears welled up — but she blinked them away, forcing them back with clenched teeth.
She wasn’t going to break. Not here. Not again.

Kiener, you know how important Raya is to this case!
Kiener looked at her, calm but firm.

I can’t help that. If she stayed, she would’ve only made things more difficult.
A tense silence followed until Marlowe finally spoke, his voice steady and commanding.

Enough. If Raya doesn’t want to take this case, that’s her choice
He turned to Kiener, eyes narrowing slightly.

She barely got the words out before he cut her off.

Kiener, Asher,Juliet, and Maya will be on this team. And Asher bring in your unit as well. We’re going to need everyone we’ve got.

Kiener stepped inside. The office was plain, functional — like any other, yet it carried the weight of every decision made inside it.Marlowe didn’t look up from his files as he spoke.
