A Place To Crash
Once I was in the cab, I knew where I would go to. Hence, without thinking twice, I took out my cellphone and dialed my former girlfriend, Myra Baruch.
I heard her voice after what? Like two years? The last time I talked to her was before I knew Agastya.
I don't know if she would even be willing to help me since I disappeared from her life without any trace.
I heard Myra's voice again over the cellphone and I knew I had to answer this time.
I cleared my throat before asking for her. I was entirely unsure if she'd even recognize me.
I heard her mumble at the same time I decided to introduce myself to her.
Meera
It's Meera this side. Meera Dhar-
Shit I forgot. I'm not a Dharmatma anymore, and I am not willing to disclose it to her either. At least not right now.
Myra
I know who you are. I recognize your damn voice Meera.
The shrill her voice suddenly picked up when she said that sentence somehow cheered me up, telling me she hasn't forgotten me just yet.
Myra asked me. I kind of flinched the way she just screamed at me from the other side.
I thought about my situation and realized something: I don't have an answer to her question.
I replied to her sighing.
Myra
Meera, are you alright? Did something happen to you? Are you in the city? Do you want to meet up and talk?
I know how impatient Myra was right now after all we only had each other to call family. Myra was an orphan too from the same orphanage grew up in.
Meera
I'm okay Myra, and we'll meet soon but listen, I just kind of need a favor from you right now.
I was a little hesitant asking her for a favor. It just doesn't sound right to me, suddenly appearing out of nowhere in her life after two long years.
Myra responded in her usual supportive voice and it kind of settled my heart at peace.
Meera
I don't have a place to call home or even go back to. Do you have a place I could crash in? It will just be for a week or two max, until I get myself an apartment?
Myra took a long pause from the other side. It was somehow scaring me about the what-ifs of if she said no.
Myra
I'm not in the city right now. But I do have a friend's place here. She lives abroad, and her apartment. You can go there and stay as long as you want. I'll get her on the phone with the security there.
Meera
Oh Myra, thank you. Thank you so much. I don't know how I'm going to thank you enough for this favor.
Myra
If you really want to 'thank' me, I'm returning Friday. Take me out on a treat to someplace nice and tell me everything you were up to the last two years you disappeared. Alright?
Myra sounded crazy mad with the last one.
Meera
Sure Myra, whenever you say. I'm just one call away.
Myra
That one goes for you as well babe. See you.
With that, I took a breath of relief. At least I have a place to live. Now, I just need a JOB.
