Let's start with the story 😌😌
Grace didn’t remember when Bliss started calling her “best friend.” It just… happened.
One day in class, a guy had asked Bliss if she wanted to sit with his group for a project. She grinned, tilted her head, and said:
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
I already have a best friend. Her name’s Grace.
Grace hadn’t reacted. Not really. She just kept highlighting her textbook.
But her chest? Her chest had burned for hours.
It became normal after that.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
Can my best friend help me pick an outfit?
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
My best friend hates parties but I’m dragging her anyway.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
My best friend Grace doesn’t like people but she likes me, so.
Grace would roll her eyes, but she never corrected her.
They shared playlists now.
Grace didn’t listen to pop music, but she had a Bliss-only folder on her phone filled with soft indie songs and chaotic romantic ballads.
Bliss kept stealing Grace’s sweaters.
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
You’re small.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
You’re warm.
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
*heart skipped a beat*
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
*smile beautifully yet warmly*
One weekend, Bliss dragged her to a bookstore two cities over.
They spent hours there, sitting on the floor in the corner between poetry and philosophy.
Bliss read sonnets aloud. Grace pretended to hate it.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
You like tragic things, right?
Bliss teased, flipping pages.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
Wanna hear about lovers dying in each other’s arms?
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
You’re the tragedy.
Grace murmured. Bliss gasped, hand to chest.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
Are you flirting with me, Grace Fernandez?
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
God, no.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
Then why is your face red?
They started sharing food. Secrets. Silence.
Grace learned that Bliss was scared of thunder but loved the smell of rain. That she once got suspended in high school for punching a boy who slut-shamed her friend. That she cried during Pixar movies but not during horror.
Bliss learned that Grace only wore black because colors made her feel too seen. That she used to draw before she stopped believing she was good enough. That she didn’t know how to ask for hugs—but sometimes really, really needed one.
Then came the moment Bliss said it with softness, not a joke.
They were sitting under the giant oak behind the science building, sunlight flickering through the leaves.
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
You know, you're kind of my safe person now.
Bliss said suddenly, half-laughing but entirely serious. Grace looked up.
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
What?
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
I don’t know. I feel like... even if everything else falls apart, I’ll still have you.
Grace didn’t answer. Because what was she supposed to say?
“I hope you’ll never leave me”?
“I want to be your always, not just your safety”?
She stayed quiet. But that night, she clutched that moment like it was a secret blooming in her ribs.
Later that night, Bliss texted her:
Bliss D'Souza/clg student
"If you ever need a hug, just look at me like I’m the answer to a question."
Grace stared at the message. She didn’t reply. She wanted to. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. She almost typed:
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
“I look at you like that every damn day.”
But she didn’t send it. Instead, she closed the chat, turned off her phone, and opened her journal.
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
"She says I’m her best friend."
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
"But sometimes she touches me like I’m more. Looks at me like I matter."
Grace Fernandez/ clg student
"I want to believe it means something. But if I believe wrong… I’ll lose her completely."
She closed the book. Sat in silence.
Her hand drifted toward the cat-paw glove Bliss left in her bag earlier that day.
She held it like it meant something. Because it did.
Grace Fernandez was her best friend.
But Grace was starting to want the kind of closeness you couldn’t laugh your way out of.
The kind that ruined friendships.
The kind you confessed… or buried.
