Dear diary,

Today was my first day at my new school in Tokyo.

Hana Mitchell.

Mom says its called 'Higashi Elementary',

Hana Mitchell.

but I call it 'huh Elementary' because I said "huh" at least a thousand times today. Maybe even a million.

I didn't understand anything. Not the announcements, not the rules, not even where to put my shoes!

Mine have bunnies on them. They squish my toes.

My homeroom teacher is named Aoyama-sensei.

*smiles softly at Hana.*

Hehe. She'd smile at me a lot, just like that and speak slowly so I'd be able to follow.

But... I could only get five little words...

One of them was *ganbatte*,

it means ^do your best.^

I think I'm gonna need that one for every single day I'm studying here.

At lunch, everyone brought these cute little bentos,

which had rice, pickled plums and rolled eggs in them.

Mama packed PB (peanut butter) sandwich and apple slices, along with a milk carton for my lunchbox.

I felt that my lunch was weird compared to everyone else's so I tried to hide it behind my milk carton,

But a boy saw it and said something, I have no idea what it meant, then laughed.

I'm hoping it's a surprise laugh and not a mean one...
