Selene Maristelle doesn’t do blind trust. She doesn’t take risks that could ruin her carefully built life.
But Lucian Vale isn’t offering her a choice.
Selene Maristelle
(crossing her arms) You still haven’t answered my question.
Lucian Vale
(raising a brow) Which one?
Selene Maristelle
What exactly do you want from me?
Lucian studies her for a moment. A slow, unreadable glance.
Then, he leans in just enough to lower his voice.
Lucian Vale
I need someone with quick reflexes, a sharp mind, and no fear of confrontation.
Selene Maristelle
(mocking) Sounds like you’re hiring a bodyguard.
Lucian Vale
(smirking) If that were the case, you’d be underqualified.
Selene clenches her jaw, irritation flaring. He’s playing with her—she knows it.
Selene Maristelle
(flatly) Get to the point.
Lucian Vale
(sipping his drink) There’s a… situation I need handled. Someone I need watched.
Selene Maristelle
You have an entire empire, and you need me to spy on someone?
The question lingers between them. She’s no fool. If he came to her, it meant one thing—whoever he wanted watched was someone no ordinary man could get close to.
And that made this dangerous.
Lucian Vale
(calmly) You’re an outsider. That makes you valuable.
Selene Maristelle
(scoffing) Or expendable.
Lucian Vale
(softly) I don’t waste valuable things, Selene.
Her breath catches for half a second. Not because of his words, but because of the way he says her name—like he’s known it forever.
Selene Maristelle
(narrowing her eyes) I don’t take orders.
Lucian Vale
(chuckles) You say that now.
Selene should leave. She should walk away from whatever game this is before she’s dragged into something she can’t escape.
But the problem is—she’s intrigued.
And Lucian Vale can see it.
Lucian Vale
Think about it, little fighter. We’ll talk again soon.
