The Unseen Watchers

Kael followed Lucien through the crumbling ruins, his senses sharp, his grip firm on the hilt of his sword. The air was thick with the scent of damp stone and decay, yet there was something else—something unseen, lurking just beyond his perception.

Lucien moved with purpose, his steps light but deliberate. Kael watched him closely, noting the way he scanned the shadows. Whoever this man was, he wasn’t just some wanderer. He had the look of someone who had been running for a long time.

"Where are we going?" Kael asked, breaking the silence.

"Somewhere safe," Lucien replied without looking back. "For now, that’s all you need to know."

Kael clenched his jaw. He didn’t like being led blindly, but he had little choice. The knowledge Lucien held could be the key to understanding everything—the past, the visions, the unsettling truth of his existence.

A chill ran down Kael’s spine. He stopped abruptly, his instincts screaming at him.

"We’re being watched," he muttered.

Lucien sighed. "Of course we are. They’ve been following you since you arrived in Eldoria."

Kael’s fingers tightened around his sword. "Who are they?"

Lucien turned, his expression grim. "The Watchers. They don’t belong to this time, just like you. They exist between moments, in the cracks of reality. They observe, but when necessary, they intervene."

Kael’s blood ran cold. "And what do they want?"

Lucien hesitated. "To erase what shouldn’t exist."

The weight of those words settled heavily on Kael. He had suspected for some time that his presence in this world was unnatural, but hearing it confirmed sent a wave of unease through him.

A whisper of movement caught his attention. Kael spun, drawing his sword just in time to deflect a shadowy blade that materialized from thin air. The force sent him stumbling back, but he recovered quickly, his stance steady.

From the darkness, figures emerged—cloaked in shifting shadows, their faces obscured. Their very presence felt wrong, as if they didn’t belong to this world.

Lucien cursed under his breath. "We need to move—now!"

Kael didn’t argue. The Watchers advanced, their movements smooth, unnatural. One lunged, and Kael met them with steel, their weapons clashing in a burst of cold energy. The impact sent a shiver through his bones.

Lucien grabbed his arm. "Fighting them is pointless. They don’t die like we do."

Kael gritted his teeth, but he knew Lucien was right. These beings weren’t normal adversaries. They were something far worse.

"Then what do we do?" Kael demanded.

Lucien’s eyes darted to a crumbling archway ahead. "We run."

Kael exhaled sharply. Running wasn’t in his nature, but he had no other option. He turned and sprinted after Lucien, the Watchers close behind. The ruins blurred past as they weaved through the remnants of a forgotten era.

A deafening hum filled the air. Kael risked a glance back. The Watchers had stopped, their forms flickering like dying embers. They stood at the threshold of the ruins, unmoving.

"They can’t leave this place," Kael realized.

Lucien nodded, breathing heavily. "Not yet. But they will find a way."

Kael looked ahead, the path stretching into the unknown. He had escaped for now, but he knew this was far from over.
