The Truth Hurts

"Jawohl Herr General, I will let him know." Emma said before putting the phone down. She got up before going over to Konrad's office with a stack of papers. She knocked on the door.

"Enter." Konrad called from within. She did so.

"These came through from Gestapo HQ, Herr Kommandant. General Bulkschnider wanted you to approve them."

"Me? Approve Gestapo papers?" Konrad said, almost concerned.

"It has to do with the weapons firm, Herr Kommandant."

"Oh yes. For some reason the Führer had them sent through the Gestapo. I'll get to them just now, thank you, Miss Heinzberg."

"You're welcome Herr Kommandant." With that she left his office. As she closed the door and went to her desk, the front door opened and strode Hogan. The sight of him made Emma momentarily freeze.

"Hey sweetheart." he said.

"What are you doing back here... I...uh" her voice was a bit shaky. For all she knew he was a dangerous rebel and that their last encounter was just luck that it all went well.

"Relax, lass, I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to speak with the Kommandant."

"I-I can't let you." she stuttered.

"Come on." he said, approaching her. "Or do I have to kiss my way through you again?"

"No, it's just he's really busy." Emma replied.

Hogan smiled. "Alright, then I'll wait." he said, casually sitting down. "How about you and I chat a bit?" Emma shrugged and carefully sat back behind the desk. "So tell me, how does a pretty little lass like you get to working a job like this?" he asked.

Emma blushed slightly. "I...uh, just finished studying and needed to find work to try to help pay it off."

"Studying, ay. What did you study?"

"Mostly hospitality related stuff."

Hogan chuckle. "I should have guessed. You are very hospitable, and I can tell you're very kind."

"What about you? Why are you doing what you're doing?" she asked.

"I was British Special Forces in Africa, part of a Commando unit. Men like me just don't know when to stop fighting."

"But the war is essentially over. Shouldn't you have been imprisoned for what you did; I mean the British were the bad guys."

Hogan shook his head. "I understand where you get that from but the Nazi's are the bad guys. I mean, Poland, France, and Yugoslavia."

"Poland attacked Germany, we were at war with France and Yugoslavia betrayed us."

"Okay, maybe you have a point. Although I heard the Poland attack was orchestrated. What about neutral Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg?"

"Well; we needed to get to France and... Make sure they couldn't push us back."

"Maybe understandable. Okay, what about neutral Norway and Denmark."

"Well...uh..." Emma stopped to think.

"I mean, I'm not saying anything but maybe what you were told on the news, in newspapers and posters wasn't all true."

"No, it had to be. There must be a reason..." She stopped and looked at him. "No, you're just trying to trick me, aren't you?"

Before he could reply, the door handle to Konrad's office slowly turned. Hogan stood up and backed against the wall, putting his hands up, as Konrad came out. Konrad looked over at him.

"What on earth is happening here?" he said.

"Kommandant your receptionist has a gun under that table pointing right at me." Hogan exclaimed in a fake panic. Emma looked at him confused and Konrad smiled.

"Well, Hogan, I see you learned the new consequences of trying to get in here."

"I know you've hired a Rottweiler of a woman. If she's going to finish me off, tell her to make it quick."

Konrad chuckled again. "Miss Heinzberg, shoot him in the leg and call the Gestapo would you. I'll be in my office." With that, Konrad re-entered his office, leaving the pretending Hogan and confused Emma alone.

"Great job. Just play along a bit more next time. I've got to go." Hogan half whispered. "YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!" he yelled before running to the door and opening it. "See you around; Emma" he said before leaving. She just sat there very confused. After a while she decided to get back to work, but something bugged her. It was what he had said; was the Führer the actual bad one and not the leaders of the Allies? She thought he may have been tricking her or trying to. Then again, he certainly didn't act like some rebel who used such trickery; he barely actually seemed like a rebel at all. She tried to ignore the thought and got back to work, yet they still lingered for a long time.
