Tears start to well up in his eyes and my heart swells
I smile encouragingly at him crouching until I'm at his eye level

let's start slow. My name is Mike what's your name

Mike
Well Peter where do you live? I can walk you home
Peter
It's kind of far... I should call my brother
I nod, looking around briefly. My own phone is back at the bookshop, but I blessedly find a payphone
After showing Peter how to use it, he calls. When he hangs up, there's a smile on his face
Peter
｡◕‿◕｡ okay! My brother is coming to pick me up
Mike
That's great. I'll wait with you in case those jerks come back
The boy grins and it's like sunshine
Peter
You're really nice mike
Peter
You think so? Thanks
So, me and Peter wait on the curb. He's sweet and happy to talk about anything
Mike
*I know I was on my way to escaping but... I'm happy I was able to help him*
Peter
Oh hey that looks like my brother's car
I turn to see a sleek black car pull
Pull to a stop in front of me
The door opens and my heart drops into my stomach
Elias
There you are, Peter
Mike
*This kid's brother is Elias?*
Peter runs into Elias's arms with relieved joy
Elias
Had me worried there, kid
Peter
It's okay. Mike helped me
Elias's eyes flick up from the boy and land at me. There's cold fire in those eyes, piercing and icy hot, and I take a step back in fear
with a settling smile he looks straight at me sending goosebumps all over my body
Elias
what are you doing out here? So far from home
I stare in shock at Elias, with the boy right there at his side
Mike
Elias... I can explain
Elias
Perhaps you can explain when we get back to the house
Peter
Hey, how do you know each other?
Elias
Mike and I are.... Colleagues
Elias
remember I said there was a new bookkeeper?
Peter's eyes go wide and he looks at me with barely contained look
Mike
No. I mean yes but I was
Elias
Mike can be shy. But don't worry, we can all catch up in the car
I swallow, taking a step back and slowly shaking my head, but before I could get far, two of Elias's guards step out of the car
Before I could finish my words, the guards making sure Peter can't see they flash their weapons at me
I look at Peter to Elias to his men. Elias step up to me, his voice low and quiet
Elias
You ran away already, Mike
He wraps a hand around my arm, giving a quick squeeze. I shudder at the strength in his grip, the power in his hold
Elias
Do you really want to make this harder on yourself?
I stumble back, my feet carrying me as I run in the opposite direction
But Elias guards quickly stop me in my tracks, holding me down
