Maybe next time!
It was another one of those days. I had lost count of how many times this had happened, but it still stung the same.

"I'm pretty sure that he too going to reject me"
My parents had told me the day before that a boy named Varun Roy and his mother were coming to “see” me.
They made it sound so casual, but I knew the undercurrent of desperation in their voices.
Another match, another hope, another chance to offload the daughter who didn’t fit the bill of a perfect bride.

"Please do it everything properly"
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
"I want everything perfect"
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
"And Supu wear the saree I gave you because it's simple and beautiful that will make you look slim."
As if clothes could mask the fact that I wasn’t society’s idea of beautiful.

*chuckled**
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
"Go fast , they're coming soon"
Suparna Mukherjee( FL)
"Hmmm"
When they arrived, I could hear their voices from my room.
Suparna Mukherjee( FL)
"Be ready Supu"
Varun and his mother exchanged pleasantries with mine and Baba’s soft, polite tones.
I waited in my room, as I always did, heart pounding, knowing what came next. The summons.
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
"Hello"
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
"Please have seat and make yourself comfortable"
Aswini Mukherjee (Bua)
"Sushmita, Call Supu"
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
*smiles nervously*...."Ji, “Suparna, beta, come outside"
Ma called, her voice tinged with that hopeful.
I walked into the room, forcing a small smile, my hands nervously clutching the ends of my saree.

💭 You can do it suparna, you can do it 💭
But the moment his eyes landed on me, I saw it. That flicker of disappointment, the involuntary grimace, the way his face twisted as if he had been expecting something better.
Suparna Mukherjee( FL)
💭I knew it didn't I ?💭
He didn’t even try to hide it. I sat down quietly, my parents immediately engaging in small talk to fill the awkward silence that followed.
But Varun didn’t participate. He leaned over to his mother and whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear.
Varun roy
“Maa, I can’t marry her. Look at her… she’s so fat. And dark. She’s just not my type.”
I froze. I felt the words hit me like a slap across the face, burning and stinging.
I could see my mother’s nervous glance toward me, my father shifting uncomfortably in his seat. But no one said a word. Not a single word in my defense.
Varun continued, as if it wasn’t enough to shatter me just once.
Varun roy
“I don’t even like her, not even a bit. There’s no way I can do this.”
He leaned back, arms crossed, his disapproval written all over his face.
His mother, clearly embarrassed, gave an apologetic smile and said.
Radhika Roy
“I’m sorry. We can’t proceed further. My son doesn’t think this will work.”
And just like that, it was over. They stood up to leave, my parents nodding and thanking them for coming as if their insults were nothing more than a polite decline.

💭I wanted to scream, to shout, to demand why no one—not even my own family—thought to defend me. Was I so unworthy that my dignity didn’t matter?💭
But I didn’t. I stayed silent, biting back the lump in my throat as they left. It wasn’t Varun’s words that broke me the most.
It was the silence of my parents—the people who should have stood by me, who should have told him to leave if he couldn’t respect their daughter.
Their silence told me everything: that my worth in their eyes was tied to whether or not someone like Varun would accept me.
Radhika Roy
"Maybe next time"
Aswini Mukherjee (Bua)
"The way is your daughter, I don't think anyone will marry her."
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
"Didi!!"
Aswini Mukherjee (Bua)
"What didi ? Ask your daughter to eat less instead of pointing at me"
Susmita Apurba Mukherjee. ( FL mother)
*sigh***
My mother began cleaning the tea tray, her face tight with disappointment but not surprise.
And I? I went back to my room, closed the door, and stared at the mirror.
Suparna Mukherjee( FL)
"Don't cry , don't cry , you're strong"
I sat down on the bed and whispered to myself.
Suparna Mukherjee( FL)
"Maybe next time"
