The days that followed felt like a haze. Emma moved through the motions of her life, but nothing felt real. She was a ghost, haunted by the memory of the betrayal, and every corner of the apartment felt like it was suffocating her. The air felt thick, like the walls were closing in on her.
By the end of the week, she’d had enough. She needed to leave—physically, emotionally, everything. Riley, her older sister, had been a comforting presence throughout the whole ordeal, offering support and a listening ear. It was Riley who suggested she leave the city for a while, get some distance.
“You need to heal, Em,” Riley had said over the phone. “You can’t do that in that apartment. Come stay with me for a while. I’ll take care of you.”
It was tempting, and Emma knew her sister was right. Her life was in tatters, and the only way to rebuild it was to take a step back.
Emma packed her things with a sense of finality. The few clothes she had left that weren’t tainted by memories of Jack or the betrayal went into a duffel bag. The rest, the things that had once made her feel at home, she would leave behind. The pictures of her and Jack, their first vacation together, their anniversary cards—everything was shoved into a box and shoved into the back of the closet, where she wouldn’t have to see it.
As she closed the door behind her for the last time, she felt a pang in her chest, but there was also a sense of relief. She wasn’t running away from her problems. She was choosing to heal.
The drive to Riley’s place was long, and Emma spent most of it in silence, her mind drifting between flashes of memories with Jack—both the happy moments and the painful ones. But as the landscape changed, so did her thoughts. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to entertain the idea of moving forward. Of leaving the past behind.
