Bound by Shadows
Lan Yi’s flames flickered uncertainly as the young woman introduced herself. Mei Lin’s calm demeanor unsettled him more than the creatures had.
Ruo Chen (ML)
Why should we trust you?
(Ruo Chen interjected, stepping closer to Lan Yi as if to shield him. His sharp gaze swept over Mei Lin, his tone edged with suspicion.)
Mei lin
(Mei Lin raised an eyebrow, unimpressed.)
You don’t have much of a choice. Those creatures were just scouts. If you want to survive what’s coming, you’ll need someone who knows the terrain.
Lan Yi (MC)
(Lan Yi glanced at Ruo Chen, sensing his unease.)
She’s right.
(he said softly.)
We’re in unfamiliar territory. If she knows something, we should listen.
Ruo Chen’s jaw tightened, his possessive streak flaring. He didn’t like the way Mei Lin spoke to Lan Yi, as though she knew what was best for him.
Ruo Chen (ML)
Fine.
( Ruo Chen said, his voice curt.)
But if you try anything, you’ll regret it.
Mei lin
(Mei Lin smirked, clearly unfazed.)
Noted. Now follow me.
Tension in the Air
As they walked through the forest, Ruo Chen stayed close to Lan Yi, his protective presence impossible to ignore.
Ruo Chen (ML)
She’s too confident.
( Ruo Chen muttered under his breath, his eyes fixed on Mei Lin’s back.)
Lan Yi (MC)
(Lan Yi glanced at him, a teasing smile tugging at his lips.)
You’re not jealous, are you?
Ruo Chen (ML)
(Ruo Chen stiffened.)
I’m not jealous. I’m cautious. There’s a difference.
Lan Yi (MC)
(Lan Yi chuckled softly, the sound easing some of the tension.)
Relax, Ruo Chen. I can take care of myself.
Ruo Chen (ML)
I know you can.
(Ruo Chen said, his tone softening.)
But that doesn’t mean I’ll let anyone take advantage of you.
Lan Yi felt a flicker of warmth at Ruo Chen’s words. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he appreciated the protectiveness.
Mei Lin’s Warning
As they reached a clearing, Mei Lin stopped abruptly. She turned to face them, her expression serious.
Mei lin
Before we go any further, you need to understand something.
(she said.)
The creatures you fought earlier are nothing compared to what lies ahead. The shadows grow stronger the closer we get to their source.
Lan Yi (MC)
(Lan Yi nodded.)
We’re ready for whatever comes.
Mei lin
Are you?
( Mei Lin challenged, her piercing gaze landing on Lan Yi. )
he Black Phoenix is no ordinary foe. It’s ancient, cunning, and relentless. And it’s connected to you in ways you don’t fully understand yet.
Ruo Chen (ML)
(Ruo Chen stepped forward, his possessive nature flaring again.)
If you have something to say to Lan Yi, say it clearly. Don’t speak in riddles.
Mei lin
(Mei Lin smirked, amused by his protectiveness.)
I’m saying that if Lan Yi doesn’t master the Phoenix Flame soon, the Black Phoenix will consume him.
Lan Yi swallowed hard, the weight of her words sinking in.
A Moment of Reassurance
That night, as they set up camp, Ruo Chen watched Lan Yi closely. He could see the worry etched on his face, the flickering flames in his palms reflecting his inner turmoil.
Ruo Chen (ML)
Lan Yi.
( Ruo Chen said, his voice gentle yet firm.)
Don’t let her words get to you. You’re stronger than you think.
Lan Yi (MC)
(Lan Yi looked up, meeting Ruo Chen’s gaze.)
What if she’s right? What if I’m not ready?
Ruo Chen (ML)
You are.
( Ruo Chen said without hesitation.)
I’ve seen what you’re capable of. And no matter what happens, I’ll be here to help you. Always.
Lan Yi felt his heart skip a beat. Ruo Chen’s unwavering support was a lifeline he didn’t know he needed.
Lan Yi (MC)
Thank you.
( Lan Yi whispered, the faintest smile breaking through his worry.)
Ruo Chen (ML)
(Ruo Chen’s expression softened, but there was an unmistakable possessiveness in his eyes as he added.)
You’re mine to protect, Lan Yi. Don’t forget that.
