By the time his car pulled into the driveway I had eaten my delicious straddles and had rushed my usual 20 minutes shower to have just enough time to put on a pair of pants and a shirt from my bags. I did waste a little time scrambling to sort through my unpacked bags after forgetting where I put my going out clothes rather than my crappy staying in clothes that all had no match.
Downstairs the doorbell rang a soft, broken, two dings before failing the third. Great first impression when the doors light gray was already pealing and the doorbell slowly suffering a weak deaf. For the first time it occurs to me that it is very possible that Noah will be scared away by the state of the house I mean not everyone was willing to risk suffocation by stale air. Even after all my work I knew this house was still in it's condemned worthy state.
Gathering myself and realizing I'd been wasting times I shout downstairs to wait a moment before bolting down the creaky but safe stairs. When I open the door I was out of breath and my legs were slightly shaking from running from the far room and missing half the stairs in my haste.
My breath however was swiftly taken again at the sight of the potential roommate that had responded. Honestly I had thought him to be a weird neat freak who was the type to only wear suits. Or of course I also thought someone who would choose a place as condemned as this one would be a teen who is desperate. Instead, in front of me was a black, well cut haired man who had dark gray eyes and a bit of a tall stance. His silver eyes made me stiffen but they were darker than the ones I remember. That gene belongs to more than just that man anyway. He was in a nice black button up that was tucked into his black pants. Definitely looked all majestic and professional while I only wore a red Shirt and jeans. I felt severely under dressed.
His face was calm as though he was only here on business (I guess he was) but his eyes showed more interest than arrogance. "Oh- come in, sorry for the wait, I was just getting dressed, so it took me a bit more seconds." he did a slight not and stepped inside after I moved over. "Im still fixing up the place, so I know the house looks pretty....rough. I made sure to focus on the guest room though, so it should be clean enough." it felt kind of awkward saying it out loud. Most people would finish cleaning up before listing the room for rent, but I really could not stand being in this house alone. Being left with your thoughts is not fun when in the quiet home of your tortured childhood. The mental and physical abuse felt almost as if it radiated off the walls.
I showed him around the house explaining how rooming would operate. I would pay the bills, but he was expected to give up his amount of money every month to play into those bills. He would have to pay for any food that he wanted other than the other common things I had bought like bread, milk, and spices. All snacks that were bought by me would be mine unless given permission and vise versa. Both of us would likely be sharing the upstairs bathroom though there was a downstairs one, and it was key that we both respect each other's privacy and respect each other In general. I got a little more specific about laundry and other things I had made a mental list of while I was preparing for his arrival. He only nodded along and was so quiet that I slowly just slowed my speaking and stopped after realizing I had been rambling on for about 20 minutes. The clock hung on the wall behind him giving that clue away.
I cleared my throat and awkwardly spoke. "a-anyway...so...did I scare you away or...are you possibly interested in rooming with me here...?" he only stares at me like he would listening to his child rambling on about his new project. After a bit of uncomfortable shifting on my part he simply nods with a slight smile. "yes. Id be grateful to rent here for my stay." suddenly the suffocating still house filled with what felt like a fresh breeze of air and my chest swelled at the thought of this dull house I had been almost completely secluded in was now going to have another living being in it. I smiled and nod. "glad the dust bunny army wasn't to intense for your nose." he chuckled and nods before he walks back to his car to grab his bags. I help him carry the bags. Guess he never planned on saying no.
