Episode 8

I sit on the edge of the bed, letting out a tired sigh.

Dark growls furiously.

Dark: "You acted like a complete idiot, Adrian! She was scared, vulnerable, and you didn't show an ounce of compassion. If I could get out of this body right now, I would do it just to bite you and teach you a lesson for making her cry!" His words echo in my mind with a different intensity.

But of course, my pride manages to be bigger than all of this... after all, it's not my fault!

Adrian: "She means nothing to me, Dark. Why are you so obsessed with her?"

Dark: "Because she's important, Adrian. You can choose to be indifferent, but I can't. She deserves our protection, even if you don't agree."

I feel the weight of his words, a mixture of anger and guilt flooding my thoughts.

Adrian: "But I don't like her!" I retort.

Dark: "That doesn't matter. She needs to be here. She needs us!" Dark insists, his voice sounding stronger than ever.

I lean back on the bed, frustrated...

This is a fight I'm bound to lose...

Adrian: "Thanks for ruining my life forever..." I mutter.

Dark: "You do that on your own. And if I didn't interfere you would have ended up with that despicable alpha's pup," he murmurs.

Adrian: "Don't talk about Melany like that."

Dark: "The truth hurts, doesn't it?"

Adrian: "Go lick yourself and leave me alone," I mutter.

The next day, I decide to face the situation head-on. Guilt had weighed on my conscience since I woke up.

It was early but I knew Zade and Anne were already awake...if they were even sleeping...

I knock on the door of their house and shortly after, Zade opens the door and greets me.

"Is Anne in?" I ask.

"She's in the kitchen," Zade replies, and I'm soon on my way there.

"Good morning, Adrian, good morning, Dark," Anne says in her usual calm voice.

"Good morning, Anne," I reply.

"Good morning, Anne and Nala," Dark replies telepathically.

"Anne, I...need a favor..." I say, feeling strangely uncomfortable.

"Sure...what do you need?" She says, turning off the stove and placing the last pancake on the plate.

"Do you have some clothes you can lend me? My...my fiancee is at my house, but she doesn't have any spare clothes..." I mutter.

"Your fake fiancee, you mean?" she asks with a slight mischievous smile and a raised eyebrow.

I turn to Zade, narrowing my eyes.

"Seriously, you can't keep your mouth shut?" I ask, and he just shrugs.

"He may be the alpha out there, but he knows I'm his supreme here," she jokes. "We have no secrets, unless they're council secrets...but anyway...what happened, why doesn't she have clothes?"

So I begin to tell her what happened, the fire, and how we got out of there and I brought her to my house.

"Poor thing...She must be terrified with all this...to lose everything so suddenly..."

"But Adrian made a point of making everything worse!" Dark yells to Anne and Zade's wolves.

"Be quiet!" I whisper, reprimanding him.

"Make me!" he growls.

"What's this about you making things worse, Adrian?" Anne asks.

"I don't know what they're talking about. Nothing happened," I mutter, trying to sound indifferent.

"He's lying. He argued with her, made her cry, and treated her like her loss was nothing, when she needed support," Dark rats me out.

"Adrian!" Anne scolds me.

"You messed up, Adrian...you messed up bad..." Zade says.

I look away, feeling increasingly uncomfortable.

"I know, I know. I'll fix it..." I mutter.

Anne shakes her head, indignant.

"I hope so. And as for you, Dark, it's not the first time we've had to intervene because of your impulsive actions. You need to learn to control your emotions too," she says.

"Well done," I murmur to Dark.

"And you, young man," she says, looking at me. "It's not just Dark who should protect her. Even though she's human, she deserves respect and protection, after all, she saved both of your lives. You're in one piece thanks to her...and if you make her cry again, Nala's going to kick both your butts," she says, and I just nod. "This week I'm going to take her shopping so I can show her around the village and she won't feel alone."

"Thank you, Anne, you're the best," I say with a slight smile.

"That's why Zade married me," she jokes, making me laugh. "Wait a minute, I'll get the clothes."

She goes upstairs and a few minutes later, comes down and hands me a small cloth bag.

"There are a few things I think she'll need, everything is new and sealed. When I go with her downtown, I'll buy more for myself," she explains.

"Thanks again, Anne... I'm going, to give it to her," I say.

"And make her coffee...as an apology," Zade advises me, and I nod.

I go back home and put the bag on the sofa.

I sigh as I make breakfast. And of course, Dark doesn't stop reminding me of the need to do things right, as if I needed constant reminders on how to act. Even so, I move on, pouring the coffee into the cup with a little more care than necessary.

It's strange to think that she's already here, that she's going to start taking up a space that, until now, was just mine.

But what can I do?

Dark is right about one thing: it's our responsibility to take care of her now, regardless of my own feelings.

Those betas must have tracked me down...but why burn down a human's house?

Dark: "Sometimes the obvious... they thought it was just another pack and they left this to get to you... Or they might have thought something else..."

Adrian: "But that wouldn't be an advantage for them, especially if I decide to retaliate...What do you think it is?"

Dark: "I think there's more to it than that. Something we're not seeing."

Adrian: "What do you mean? Do you know something I don't?"

Dark: "I'm not sure. But I feel a strange energy in the air. As if something is approaching, something bigger than we imagine...They might be preparing for something bigger. Who knows what they are planning in the north village."

Adrian: "It's possible. We need to be alert and find out what they're planning..."

Dark: "I agree. We can't let our guard down, especially now that Ayla is involved."

Adrian: "Yes. Let's keep an eye out and be prepared for whatever comes."

With a tired sigh, I focus on finishing breakfast.

Dark: "Adrian, you can't serve this like this, it looks like you're giving her dog food," he grumbles.

I roll my eyes.

Adrian: "I know what I'm doing, Dark. You don't have to keep reminding me every second."

He growls.

Dark: "I'm just trying to make sure you don't screw it up again."

Sighing, knowing he's right, but still annoying me with his constant presence. Ignoring his complaints, I finish setting the table.

Adrian: "There, done. Now, can you stop bugging me?" I tell Dark, hoping he'll finally shut up.

After I finish, I go upstairs and knock on Ayla's door, she doesn't answer.

I knock again...

Nothing.

I open the door, look inside, and see her lying on her back to the door.

"Ayla. I made coffee," I say.

Dark: "Speak properly!"

I take a deep breath.

"If...if you want to come down... I don't know if you like coffee... but... I made some things... It's better to come down, otherwise it'll get cold," I say, keeping my voice soft.

She stirs but doesn't turn to me.

I just close the door and go downstairs, back to the kitchen.

As I'm preparing the plate, I hear footsteps approaching and I turn to talk to her.

"There's herbal te- Ah! For the love of the Supremes!" I say after jumping a little, looking at her.

She was disheveled, her face swollen, in a mixture of anger and sadness.

Frightening...

She sits at the table as if she were a little out of it.

I put the plate in front of her.

As if gathering her strength, she picks up her fork and pokes at the food...

She eats a little, but she keeps pushing the food around...

Dark: "Look what you did, Adrian. She's like this because of you!"

I mentally roll my eyes.

Adrian: "Don't start, Dark. I know I wasn't very nice yesterday, but it wasn't my intention to leave her like this."

Dark just snorts.

Dark: "Intention or not, you acted like a jerk. She didn't deserve that."

I sigh, feeling a weight on my conscience.

Maybe Dark was right...

"I...got some clothes for you from my friend's wife, it's in the bag on the couch. This week she'll come here to take you downtown so you can buy everything you need...Don't worry about the cost, just put it all in my name..." I offer, trying to sound kind.

She just nods, without taking her eyes off the plate, and continues to push the breakfast around without appetite.

After a while she pushes the plate away slightly and stands up without a word.

She goes upstairs and I hear the door close.

Adrian: "Shut up. Don't say anything. Don't even think about it... I got it..."

But of course... Dark wouldn't be quiet...

While I was in the council office looking at paperwork, all I could hear in my mind was Dark's voice with comments or criticisms, reminding me of what happened and how I acted with Ayla.

Adrian: "I'm trying to concentrate here, can you...? Just five minutes!" I mutter, reprimanding him.

As I try to work, the door opens.

I look up and see Melany entering the door with her seductive smile on her lips.

Dark automatically starts growling.

She comes up to me, turns my chair around, and lunges at me, her lips seeking mine in an urgent and hungry kiss. For a moment, I give in to temptation, lost in the heat of the moment and the familiarity of her touch...

"Get away from him!" Dark orders her wolf.

A little confused, she steps back.

"Why is he talking to me like that?" she asks.

"Melany, we need to talk," I murmur, feeling her confused gaze on me.

"What is it, Adrian? You seem tense," she says, her hands running across my chest and arms. "If you want, I can make you relax..." Her hands start to move down to my thighs as she smiles suggestively.

I swallow hard, wanting to give in...

Dark: "Adrian!"

Dark's voice in my mind brings me back...

"Melany..." I say, taking her hands. "It's about us..."

She looks at me in confusion.

"What about us?" she asks.

"We can't go on... I... I'm engaged," I say, feeling a lump form in my throat as the words came out.

"What?!" Melany exclaims, shocked, backing away. "To whom?"

"To Ayla," I reply, seeing her expression change to a mixture of disbelief and indignation. "You don't know her."

"Come on, Adrian! What about us? Huh? I'm the one you're supposed to be with!" she says, the anger evident in her voice.

"Melany... I've made up my mind."

She crosses her arms, her lips pursed in a disapproving pout, her eyes flashing with anger, unable to accept the rejection.

"You're making a terrible mistake! You're going to choose anyone over me?!" she yells.

"Ayla is my DNA mate, so think carefully when you talk about her! Now you... You have nothing to offer me, so please don't look for me again," Dark says, his voice firm and threatening, making her take a step back.

"You'll regret dumping me, I guarantee it!" She turns on her heel with a sharp movement, her blonde hair swinging with the dramatic gesture as she storms out of the office.

Dark: "Thank the Supremes that repulsive being is gone..."

Adrian: "What's this about Ayla being your DNA mate? You were bluffing, weren't you?"

A DNA mate was more than just a genetic coincidence; it was a deep bond between two people whose genetic codes intertwined in a unique way. In our reality, this bond transcended the boundaries of biology and manifested as an undeniable connection.

Zade and Anne were a clear example of this. When they met and touched for the first time, something inside them instantly recognized the compatibility of their DNA. It was as if their wolves, the fruit of the same genetic experience, knew intuitively that they belonged to each other.

This bond could not be disputed. It was not just a physical or emotional affinity, but something deeper, a primal connection that transcended the barriers of time and space. It was as if their souls were destined to meet, regardless of the circumstances. And that was a truth that even science couldn't fully explain. It was like we were soul mates...

Dark: "I never bluff," he replies firmly.

Adrian: "She can't be your DNA mate, Dark. She's human, she doesn't have a wolf," I argue.

Dark: "Then why are you asking if I'm lying?"

I take a deep breath, gathering the rest of the patience I had.

Adrian: "Because this is too serious for games!"

Dark: "Take it however you want, if you want to deny the truth, the problem is yours."

Heavens... now what... Dark, besides being delusional about a human, is going crazy...

I'm going to lose the rest of my sanity...

Adrian: "I'm already doing everything you asked, but I'm not going to get carried away by your delusions."

Someone knocks on my door.

But it's the height of not having a minute's peace.

"Come in!"

One of the betas opens the door.

"Sir, just to inform you that the council members are waiting for you in the meeting room," he says, and I nod.

Adrian: "As if that wasn't enough, I still have to tell everyone that she's my fiancee... I hope you're satisfied, Dark."

Dark: "You have no idea," he says with a somewhat smug tone of voice.

I get out of my chair and walk to the meeting room.

I walk into the room, seeing all those faces... alphas of long lineage...

"Gentlemen," I begin, my voice sounding firm and controlled despite the inner turmoil. "I would like to inform you all that I am engaged."

I could feel the piercing gaze of the other members on me, an enormous pressure, making me suffocate...

"She is... my DNA mate," I say, trying to sound firm without giving in to distrust.

Dark was laughing internally.

Dark: "Are you bluffing, Adrian? I don't believe it..." he chuckles.

The news causes a stir in the room, with murmurs and expressions of surprise.

Maxus, Melany's father, had a satisfied smile on his face, but the malice was evident...

"Congratulations, Adrian!" Maxus exclaims, causing all eyes to turn to him. "Let me be the first to suggest a grand engagement party to celebrate this occasion and, of course, to meet the lucky lady!"

I just nod.

"Yes, Maxus, thank you for the suggestion. I'll leave the details to you."

As the other council members expressed their approval and offered their congratulations, I could barely hear the words of encouragement.

Adrian: "It's lie after lie..." I murmur to Dark.

When the meeting finally comes to an end, I leave the room, feeling an infernal discomfort, a shortness of breath...

I walk quickly to my office, closing the door behind me as soon as I enter, allowing myself to breathe.

Adrian: "This farce won't last long... Do you have any idea what we've done? She's human, they'll find out sooner or later!"

Dark: "You could try marking her... maybe you could inject our genes into her..."

Adrian: "And what if it doesn't work? What if she rejects the genes and ends up... Ouch! DAMN IT, DARK! LOOK AT THE MESS YOU GOT US INTO!"
