• The Curry Crush •
The school’s outdoor court glows under a dramatic sunset—peach, lavender, gold.
The chain-link fence surrounding the court rattles gently in the breeze.
A few kids shoot hoops, their sneakers squeaking against the concrete, the faint thump-thump of the ball echoing.
A bench is present just off the court, near a row of scraggly trees. It’s old, paint chipped, one side a bit loose. A perfect, forgotten place to hide after a long day.
Curry approaches, clutching a juice box in one hand, her bag slung crookedly over her shoulder.
Curry
*moving carefully, trying not to trip over the uneven sidewalk*
Curry
(No bookshelves to knock over.)
Curry
(Zero possibility of public disasters.)
She stops short when she sees Kevin already there, sitting with his backpack beside him.
He’s hunched forward, elbows on his knees, watching the players on the court idly.
His profile is washed in orange sunlight, hair slightly messy from the breeze.
Curry
*makes an eye contact with him*
Kevin
*face breaks into an easy smile*
Kevin
Bench's free, if you want.
Curry gives him a nervous, wobbly grin and sits down, leaving a polite six-inch buffer.
She crosses her legs and uncrosses them, then finally plants her feet.
Curry
I'm a picture of serenity.
Kevin
*grinning* You sure about that?
Curry
*reconsidering* Okay…
Curry
Maybe… Like 70% serenity.
Curry
The rest is pure panic.
Curry
(AHHHHHHH WHAT THE HELL AM I SAYING?)
Curry
*picks up a loose thread on her skirt*
Curry
I wanted to say sorry for knocking over half the library yesterday.
Curry
And maybe half the school’s book budget.
Curry
If the librarian invoices you, I will pay half.
Kevin
I think she was more worried about the shelf than the books.
Kevin
But honestly? I’m kinda glad you did it.
Kevin
I wouldn’t have talked to you otherwise.
They fall quiet for a moment, listening to the basketball bouncing, kids shouting, a crow cawing from a telephone wire.
A/N: She isn't there, btw. I did it because I wanted to.
A/N: Alright, back to the story.
Kevin
I, uh... saw you reading the book.
Curry
Yeah… *holds up the book*
Curry
I’m halfway through already.
Curry
Like it knows what you can’t say.
Kevin
That’s why I liked it.
Kevin
Some people talk a lot, but they don’t really say anything.
Kevin
Other people... hold everything in.
Kevin
The letters in that book are kinda like... letting yourself breathe.
A/N: Genuinely, I wanna read it.
Curry
I hold things in too.
Curry
Or worse, I just... say everything except what I actually mean.
Kevin
*smiling softly* I've noticed.
Curry
*embarrassed but warm laughter*
Her fingers drum against the side of her juice box.
Curry
Is that a bad thing?
Curry
(Huh? That's not mine.)
Kevin
Even if it comes out sideways.
Curry
(If it's not mine, then does it mean…)
Curry tries to hide her grin behind the straw.
A basketball rolls by, escaping from the game.
Kevin leans forward, stops it with his foot, and tosses it back in a smooth arc.
Curry watches his easy, calm motion.
Curry
(This one's definitely mine.)
Curry
(Why is my heart trying to launch itself out of my ribs?)
Kevin
*studying her* You seem quieter today.
Curry
I'm trying not to combust.
Curry
Takes a lot of concentration.
Kevin
Well, you're doing great.
Curry
Do not worry, I will make sure to blast once I graduate.
Kevin
Yeah, blast the school.
Kevin
That's every single student's dream afterall.
They both look ahead again.
A breeze rustles through, fluttering Curry’s hair across her cheek. She pushes it back, flustered.
Kevin
*softly* Can I ask you something?
Curry
*heart-rate skyrocketing*
Kevin
Why did you look so scared the other day?
Kevin
After we talked. You kind of... ran out.
Curry
Like, every part of me was screaming, “This is the moment!”
Kevin
You’re allowed to panic, you know.
Kevin
It means it mattered.
Curry
You really think so?
Kevin
*pauses for a second*
Kevin
I... kinda panicked too.
Kevin
I didn’t think you’d even talk to me.
Kevin
I’ve seen you around, and you’re just...
Curry
(It's hard to tell whose heartbeat that is, now.)
Kevin
…kind of unstoppable.
Curry
I tripped over a football last week and nearly took out the principal.
Curry
(There's definitely something wrong with his brain.)
Kevin
*stares at the court*
Kevin
You mess up, but you keep going.
Curry is momentarily speechless.
She looks at her own shoes, scuffed and taped on the side, and tries to process a world in which Kevin sees her as unstoppable.
Curry
(Is this what validation feels like?)
Curry
(Because I think I might faint.)
Curry
*sips juice to calm down*
Kevin
*nudging her with his shoulder*
Kevin
You don’t have to answer right away, but...
Kevin
Would you maybe want to hang out sometime? Outside school?
Curry
*chokes on the juice*
Curry
*wipes her mouth with the back of her hand*
Curry
*shouts as loud as she can* LIKE A DATE?!
Kevin
*blushing while being flustered*
Kevin
Yeah, but—like, casual.
Kevin
Whatever feels comfortable.
Curry’s entire face goes bright red.
She nearly jumps off the bench with excitement, but manages to contain it.
They share a shy moment of eye contact, then both look away at exactly the same time, awkward but sweet.
The sun dips lower behind the school building, throwing a pink glow across the cracked basketball court.
A distant whistle blows. Practice is ending. Players drift away, laughing and pushing each other.
Kevin stands, tossing his bag over one shoulder.
He holds out his phone, hopeful.
Curry gives him hers, hands slightly shaking, and they exchange numbers.
Curry
*giggles quietly at the emoji he chose*
Curry
*smiles* That's adorable.
Curry
Yeah, definitely. *nods*
He waves and starts heading home.
Curry watches him go, the sunset behind him, every color of the world seeming to glow a little brighter.
She pulls her knees up on the bench, hugging them, overwhelmed and happy.
Curry
AHAHAHHSSKDHGEEJDJDDK
Curry
This is how first love feels like…
