• The Curry Crush •
The school is nearly empty now.
The fading sun casts soft amber light through the tall windows.
Desks are slightly misaligned, posters curl at the corners, and the faint buzz of distant janitorial equipment hums from the hallway.
At the back of the classroom, Curry sits alone on top of a desk, her feet resting on the chair.
Her head is leaned against the cold windowpane.
The room is drenched in golden hour light, but her mood doesn’t match the warmth.
Curry
*hugging her knees loosely*
Her backpack is tossed onto the floor.
Her once perfectly styled hair is now frizzy and loose.
She’s chewing the straw of a juice box like it owes her money.
Curry
(It should feel like a victory.)
Curry
But why do I feel like hiding is a broom closet? *mutters*
The door creaks open gently.
Ash
So… This is where the protagonist retreats to reflect.
Curry
*sighs without turning*
Curry
Came here to psychoanalyze me again?
Ash
It's on my contract as your most rational friend.
A/N: Is anyone of us rational? No. But did I mention rationality in the story? Yes.
Ash drops her own bag by the teacher’s desk and plops into the seat beside Curry—leaning back, arms crossed behind her head.
Ash
I also bring judgment and unsolicited advice.
She reaches into her blazer pocket and tosses a crumpled snack bar toward Curry.
Curry
This expired last month.
Ash
Still have nutritional value, probably.
Ash
And yet, you still look like a soap opera lead in existential crisis.
Ash
Did he reject your book choice?
Curry
He was nice. He was charmingly nice.
Curry
He gave me a book suggestion. We laughed.
Curry
It was like a scene from a movie.
Curry
It is! I should be over the moon, right?
Curry
But instead, I feel like I’m about to puke rainbows.
Ash
You’re scared because something you’ve been building in your head just got real.
Curry
What if I’m just… a funny background character to him?
Ash
You’re not background, Curry. You’re a whole genre.
Curry
*chokes a laugh* What does that even mean?
Ash
It means you walk into rooms and things happen
Ash
You stress. You dramatize. You live loud.
Ash
But that’s what makes you... you.
Ash
Kevin smiled at that version of you, didn’t he?
Curry
(He did. He really did.)
Curry’s hands. She fidgets with the corner of the snack bar wrapper. Then looks out the window.
Curry
What if he doesn't actually like me?
Curry
What if he was just being polite?
Ash
Bro would miss such a golden opportunity to get our one and only bilota.
Ash
Then don’t you want to find out?
Curry
You make it sound so simple.
Ash
You either try and live…
Ash
Or you stay here in this dusty room, talking to a machine-brained girl who snacks on expired granola.
Curry
*smiles* You forgot "emotionally stunted."
A/N: True, none of us aren't emotionally stunted tho.
Ash
*scratches the back of her neck* That too.
They sit quietly for a few beats.
Outside, a bird lands on the windowsill, hops once, then flies away.
Ash
You’re scared because this isn’t just a crush anymore.
Ash
And maybes are terrifying.
Curry
It’s easier when he was just a hallway fantasy.
Curry
Now he has... thoughts.
Curry
And flawless handwriting. Did you know that?
Ash
I refuse to believe that…
Ash
A man with a good penmanship is absolutely impossible to find.
Ash
*deep voice* Cherish him, truly rare.
Ash
Afterall, every single man's handwriting that I've seen looks like an insect learning to poop.
They both laugh—quiet, genuine laughter that breaks some of the heaviness.
Ash
You don't have to confess.
Ash
Or name your imaginary kids.
Ash
Just… keep talking to him.
Curry
Even if I knock over a library shelf every time?
A bell rings faintly in the distance—the school’s end-of-day chime.
Curry
*hops off the desk, landing with a soft thud*
Curry
I hate how right you always are.
Ash
It’s exhausting carrying this much wisdom at seventeen.
They walk to the door together. Curry grabs her bag. Ash opens the door dramatically.
Ash
After you, emotional trainwreck.
Curry
Why, thank you, emotionally unavailable robot.
The hallway is nearly empty now.
The walls echo their footsteps. Faint chatter from the courtyard seeps through the windows.
They walk side by side. Curry is still chewing the straw of her drink.
Curry
Do you think I'm too much?
Ash
No, you're just… uncensored.
Curry
*crosses arms and covers her chest*
Curry
What do you mean-? *terrified*
Ash
T-That's not what I meant-
Ash
Why do you look so disappointed?
Ash
Anyway, I'm just being honest.
Ash
And I’d rather be around a girl who speaks in chaos than someone who says nothing at all.
Curry
I don’t want to say nothing to him anymore.
Curry
I think I want… a full conversation.
Curry
Like, words. Real words.
Ash
Then you’re already halfway there.
They reach the exit doors.
Kevin is still seated, flipping through Letters I’ll Never Send.
Kevin
*eyes land on a line*
“Some words stay folded in silence until someone kind enough helps you unfold them.”
Kevin
*glances towards the empty hallways beyond the window, thinking*
Ash and Curry walk down the steps.
Ash
So, what’s your next move?
Curry
*takes a deep breath*
Curry
I am going to approach him first and say hi.
