Episode 6

Everything was perfect, both at home and at work. Sometimes I traveled for work, all in the most normal way possible.

Sometimes at home, Mrs. Maria would tell me more stories about the Bastos, especially about my mother-in-law, and how difficult her loss to cancer was.

And since her death, her son has never returned home, and that his father will go find him, but their convenience was never great before their mother's death, it only got worse after.

I asked Maria a question: why aren't there any photos of the son as an adult in the house, and why doesn't anything here look like the house they lived in?

Maria: Girl, Ari, this house was bought to receive you, we lived in another mansion, and when Mr. Augusto practically forced his son to marry, he demanded that he buy a house where he wouldn't know anything about him or his childhood. He would be a stranger, just like you are to him.

He only allowed that picture from when he was a baby, otherwise he wouldn't accept the marriage, and so it was done.

His mother has been dead for over five years, and he went to another country, she lives to this day, they say, but tongues say that he takes care of the family's companies where he lives.

But I've also heard that he has his own company, and that he hasn't decided to take over the family business yet.

So it's hard to know what goes on in the mind of that man, who I observed at his mother's funeral was twenty-four years old.

Now he must be about to turn twenty-nine, you know, he didn't even come on his mother's death anniversary.

I think he blames his father, because during his mother's treatment to alleviate the disease, his father was always traveling on business, and was never part of his wife's final moments.

I've been working for the family for fifteen years, I've never heard any comments about cheating or anything like that.

So much so that Mr. Augusto never had a secretary, they were all male employees.

And he always showed love for his wife, but when the doctors gave up, he suddenly started to withdraw, and I think that's where the son's anger at his father lies.

But everyone who knew the couple says that he closed himself off to everything too, I think that because he loved her so much, he went into depression even before losing her.

But who knows, honey, everything is so difficult, and one of them is understanding the human mind.

Mr. Augusto lives here in this solitude, the son lives far away, we know nothing about him, the way is to stay and watch everything up close without being able to do much.

Mr. Augusto started talking more now after he came to live here, and to my eyes he is happy to have you here.

And of course we too, you brought light to this place, and to Mr. Augusto's eyes.

Ariane: I'm happy that, even though I came here by parachute, I'm making someone happy, thank you.

Maria: Not someone, all of us who live here, and we appreciate your wonderful presence.

You are very dear, and you have won our affection and our hearts, being this good person that you are.

You never made an exception of any of us, from the gardener, to the security guards, you always treated us with education and friendship, that is what we will miss if you leave.

I know you're anxious to finish this marriage contract and go live with your mother, we understand.

But you can be sure that we will miss you very much.

And you also made us miss Mrs. Luna Bastos a lot, she was just like you, always smiling and treated us the same way you do, with respect and as a human being, never as servants of the house.
