"Letting Go"

Chapter Ten

Rachel tried to push Jack out of her mind, but it was harder than she thought. Every time she closed her eyes, she could see his face, hear his voice. She knew that she needed to move on, but it felt like an impossible task.

One day, Rachel received a phone call from a number that she didn't recognize. She almost didn't answer, but something made her pick up the phone.

"Hello?" she said.

"Rachel? It's me, Jack," the voice on the other end said.

Rachel's heart skipped a beat. She didn't know what to say.

"I'm sorry to call you like this," Jack said. "But I needed to talk to you. I need your help."

Rachel hesitated for a moment before asking, "What kind of help?"

"I need to get away," Jack said. "From everything. My wife, my job, my life. I just can't take it anymore."

Rachel felt a pang of sympathy for Jack, but she knew that she couldn't be the one to help him.

"I'm sorry, Jack," she said, her voice firm. "But I can't be a part of this. You need to figure things out on your own."

There was a long pause before Jack spoke again.

"I understand," he said. "I just...I don't know what to do."

Rachel could hear the desperation in his voice, but she knew that she couldn't give in. She needed to focus on herself and her own life.

"I'm sorry, Jack," she said again. "But I can't help you."

With that, Rachel hung up the phone, feeling a mix of relief and sadness. She knew that it was time to let go of her dark obsession with Jack and move on with her life. It wouldn't be easy, but she knew that it was the right thing to do.

bonus topic -

Amis's first and — many would say — best book mixes sexually charged campus novel with angry-young-man critique of academic inertia, bourgeois convention and artistic pretension, with hilarious results. Jim Dixon is a history lecturer at an English university who doesn't like his job but feels he has to try to keep it, and doesn't much like his girlfriend either but feels he has to keep her, too, because she is emotionally unstable. The drunken lecture that has the effect of loosening these life-denying knots is a comic tour de force. Stephen Moss.
