Chapter Eight
Rachel walked away from Jack that night feeling conflicted. Part of her was relieved that she had finally stood up to him and ended things for good. But another part of her couldn't shake the feeling that she was making a mistake.
Over the next few days, Rachel tried to distract herself from her thoughts by throwing herself into her work. But she found it difficult to focus, constantly replaying the events of the previous night in her head.
One afternoon, Rachel received a call from an unknown number. She hesitated for a moment before answering, but curiosity got the better of her.
"Hello?" she said.
"Rachel, it's me," Jack's voice came through the phone.
Rachel's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected to hear from him so soon.
"What do you want?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I need to see you," Jack said. "Please, just hear me out. I have something important to tell you."
Rachel hesitated for a moment before agreeing to meet Jack at a local coffee shop. She knew that it was probably a mistake, but part of her couldn't resist the pull that he had on her.
As she sat across from Jack, sipping her coffee, she tried to keep her emotions in check.
"What do you want to tell me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I've been seeing a therapist," Jack said. "I know that I have a problem, and I'm trying to fix it. I never wanted to hurt you. I just didn't know how to handle my emotions."
Rachel listened, unsure of what to say.
"I know that I messed up," Jack continued. "But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make things right. I still care about you, Rachel. And I want to be with you."
Rachel felt a mix of emotions swirling inside of her. Part of her wanted to believe that Jack had changed, that he could be the man that she had always wanted him to be. But another part of her knew that it was too dangerous to take that chance.
As she looked into Jack's eyes, Rachel knew that she had to make a decision. She could either forgive him and give him another chance, or she could walk away and never look back.
But as she sat there, staring at Jack, she knew that the choice had already been made for her. She couldn't let herself fall back into the dark obsession that had consumed her before.
"I'm sorry, Jack," Rachel said, her voice firm. "But it's over. We can't go back."
With that, she stood up and walked away, leaving Jack sitting alone in the coffee shop, his heart heavy with regret.
