Chapter 4 - Darkness
The cold swept over the North like a tsunami, covering grain and ground alike.
My territory always struggled during the winter despite the vigorous preparations for it.
Warm blood splattered across the white snow as I sliced through one last monster, causing it to fall dead in front of me.
I straightened my back, my hand gripping tightly the handle of my sword.
I turned around, my expression well-known to be as cold as the winter climate in the North.
I turned towards my attendant, waiting for him to speak.
I didn't have to wait long.
Albert Smith
There has been another breach in the Southern side of the mountains.
Albert Smith
I've dispatched Yates and his team to deal with the threat.
Our walls are supposed to be impenetrable and unclimbable.
Yet we've suffered fourteen major breaches in the past month.
This can't be a coincidence.
Someone is letting those creatures through the gates.
I've only got one question. Who is so eager to sign their own death warrant that they'd dare go against me in my own territory?
Albert Smith
I await your instructions.
I turn towards the dead corpse of the monster I had just killed before wiping my sword on the snow.
I sheathed it before turning towards my assistant.
Kylian Shade
Find me who authorized the gates to be left open and when.
Albert Smith
And Sir... shall I make the necessary preparations?
Although my expression doesn't change, I feel frustration boil inside me.
Kylian Shade
I can delay it for another day.
Albert Smith
Sir, you said that three days ago.
Albert Smith
If you don't perform the 'Letting' ceremony, there's a chance that-
Kylian Shade
I'll be fine.
I've got a duty to protect my land. Trifling affairs have no place in my mind, not when my land is falling apart because of a traitor.
Kylian Shade
Find out who is responsible.
Al looked at me before nodding, bowing briefly before dismissing himself.
I walked towards my horse, my heart racing with adrenaline and anger.
I am starting to feel the effects of the curse...
It's been too long since I last performed a 'Letting' ceremony to calm the beast hidden inside me.
I mount onto my horse before heading towards the nearest gate, my eyes sharp.
I look around me, trying to pick up on people's fluctuations.
Nothing overtly suspicious.
Then again, my presence has something of a repelling effect to most common folk.
Most people desert upon laying their eyes on me.
However, there are a few who stay... and one of those people is staring at me with hatred in his eyes.
Seems like I've found one of my traitor candidates...
Time to ask some questions.
Just like a shadow descending from the night's sky, I came upon my suspect like a thief in the night.
Many people must learn that betraying me comes at a greater cost than they could ever pay...
