Su Tang’s hammering did not hurt the man. Rather, it was like a tickle. His voice, however, was loud and resounding, the shock making Ling Si somewhat dazed.
“How am I a rogue once again?” Ling Si helplessly asked.
“You, you, you.. you just said you’ll invite me to eat chicken[jī]…… oh!” Su Tang suddenly reacted and promptly covering his mouth with his hands. A blush rising on his face, he did not want to continue speaking.
He may have overreacted a little just a moment ago. The ‘ba‘[吧][1] here seems to be the modal particle. This person, Ling Si, probably did not expect this of him, but he happened to be a bit impure. The fact that the two of them were not on the same line made Su Tang feel quite embarrassed.
“Hahaha, you are indeed a Little Ancestor, amusing me to death.” At his side, the system sneered.
“Just say chicken[jī] without the ‘bā‘[巴][2]. That way, it would be harmonious for everyone. Really, can you blame me?” Su Tang mumbled a few words to himself and his face became heated once more. He hammered at Ling Si’s back again then buried his face into the other person’s nape, refusing to say a word.
At this point, Ling Si also reacted and simply thought that Su Tang was amusing. He softly chuckled but was immediately bitten by Su Tang.
Bitten on the back of the neck.
Su Tang’s small teeth grew very evenly and were not at all sharp. Leaving behind only a small watermark after he had finish biting, they did not hurt and merely itched. Hot air puffed against his skin, stirring him up and Ling Si could not help but tremble.
This only made Su Tang think that his bite had hurt the other person. Feeling quite pleased with himself, he shouted: “Not allowed to say anything about this, or I will bite you again.”
“En, okay.” Though Ling Si nodded, he actually wanted the other person to continue biting.
Because it was surprisingly comfortable.
Phoenix Mountain was not far from the capital city. After descending the mountain, they would arrive after walking just a few miles down the road. Ling Si’s footstep were very fast and despite there being a beauty on his back, he did not feel tired at all. On the contrary, he was very happy.
Naturally, Su Tang, who was being carried on his back, was also feeling comfortable. With a rice-cake held in his right hand and a water bag in his left, he would take two bites when hungry, and two mouthful of water when thirsty. The May scenery around him was both beautiful and picturesque, with colorful butterflies lightly dancing about. It was like being out on a spring excursion and Su Tang nearly wanted to indulge in the pleasure and forget his home and duty.
“Little Ancestor, you still have the mind to be happy now? Do you even know where the female lord has ran to?” the system asked, conjecturing darkly.
“Oh, then do you know?” Su Tang asked.
“I……” The system felt choked, growing annoyed with Su Tang, and took a moment to calm itself before saying: “In any case, she has to be somewhere in the capital. It’s written like that in the script. I do not choose the place.”
“Then what should I do, ah?” Not even eating the rice-cake anymore, Su Tang placed it back into Ling Si’s bundle. As he did so, he happened to see a red rope hanging from around Ling Si’s neck and began to claw at it with his nails.
“Just take it one step at a time, okay. The male and female lords are a pair decreed by fate so the two will always be connected by a thread.” The system comforted but then remembered what Su Tangs mind was like. Afraid he would just happily play around, it hurriedly warned: “This is your task. Don’t get distracted. If you can’t complete the task, you won’t be able to return home. If that happens, even crying will be useless.”
“Oh, oh, oh, got it. I will definitely be diligently searching.” Su Tang perfunctory ended the matter and laid in a daze on top of Ling Si. The sun was very warm, the rays making him somewhat sleepy. After letting out a soft sigh, he narrowed his eyes, wanting to take a nap on Ling Si’s back.
“Ling Si, how long until we get there?” Su Tang softly asked.
“We’ll get there before dinner time,” Ling Si answered.
Earlier, the two had already exchanged their names, even conveniently chatting for a while. Su Tang, this person with sincere eyes, to anything that Ling Si asked, he would answer. With just a few words, he had confessed everything about his family.
For example, because of a forced marriage, his order sister felt compelled to run away. He also spoke of how his clan was very powerful and that they did not eat humans as it was enough for them to eat the tributes given to them by the small demons on the mountain. When speaking of this, Su Tang had licked his lips, probably remembering the taste of the mountain’s treasure.
Ling Si listened and his heart felt relieved. He knew that some demons who have already become spiritual, followed the cultivation path and never sinned. Su Tang, as a rarely seen arctic fox who had been pampered and spoiled since childhood, was probably from that kind of clan.
As a result, Su Tang was a kindhearted little demon and Ling Si had a clear conscience about not wanting to capture him.
Su Tang finished speaking and while pulling at the red rope around Ling Si’s neck once again, he asked: “And what about you? Why did you come down the mountain?”
Su Tang only had a general idea of the story’s plot. The system had not told him any specific details. Because he was curious, he couldn’t help but ask.
“I accepted an order from my master to go and capture demons. I’ll only capture demons who have done evil, of course. I won’t capture those who are like you,” Ling Si said.
“And then what?” Su Tang asked, jabbing him with his finger.
“And then?” Ling Si paused, then disappointingly said: “I want to find something.”
“Oh.” Su Tang thought that Ling Si’s tone was a little sad and he immediately felt uncomfortable. In a rare moment of silence, he simply held tightly onto Ling Si’s neck and laid trustingly on his back.
Walking and walking, Su Tang fought to keep his eyelids propped up. Walking and walking again, he fell asleep.
When Su Tang woke up, the sun was already leaning to the west. There were now many pedestrians around, as well as many stalls with peddlers flaunting and selling their crafts. It was very lively and Su Tang curiously looked in all direction. Ling Si informed him that they have already entered the city.
“Wow, that’s great.” Su Tang happily cheered and was itching to climb up and sit directly on Ling Si’s shoulders. Openly looking at everything, his range of movements were not small, attracting the surrounding pedestrians to look his way.
In passing, they also looked at Ling Si.
The two people’s style of dress was quite ordinary but their appearances were truly first class. Ling Si, being the story’s male lord, was handsome and unrestrained. Also being eight feet tall[3], he was extremely eye catching when walking through the crowd. All the young ladies looked his way, blushing and whispering to one another.
Then, there was also the small and attractive young man on his back. With white porcelain-like skin, shining black eyes, red lips and white teeth, he was both lovable and desirable. If couple with a pair of ears, he would almost be like a small milk dog[4].
The two of them were extremely good-looking, like Immortal beings. Passing through, the people could not help but look. Su Tang was also being quite cooperative as he would return the gazes of all those who looked his way, making the people watching to feel embarrassed.
“Are they looking at me because I’m good-looking?” Su Tang poke Ling Si and leaned his body forward to ask in his ear.
The hot breath wormed through his ear, heating up until half of Ling Si’s face was red. Groaning out a sound of agreement, he propped up Su Tang’s bottom and continued walking.
“Why are you always grabbing my butt? It hurts.” Su Tang was discontented.
“Sorry, just wait till I find an inn, then I can apply medicine for you?” Ling Si asked.
“No need to apply medicine. There’s no broken skin so just giving it a rub is enough.” After Su Tang said that, Ling Si’s face was instantly red.
Rub? Is he letting him rub it?
Su Tang did not know that the words he had spoken were ambiguous and as it was heard by the people passing by, they all could not help but turn their heads to look back at the two again. This was a time where the popular customs was to be opened with one’s sexuality and cut sleeves[5] were not uncommon. Within the capital alone, there were many rich young masters who would love to raise a young and beautiful boy. Looking at the two people’s intimate posture and ambiguous words, it may be assume that such was the case.
“You look at him, so good to his own wife, carrying for so long yet not even saying he’s tired.”
Those words flutter to Su Tang’s ear and he raised his head to look up at several people. Feeling bewildered, he bowed his head and said to Ling Si: “Hehe, they take me for your wife.”
“Is that so?” Hearing this, Ling Si’s heart felt very happy and his face revealed a smiling expression. It goes without saying that he was already very good looking but to see this kind of smile, it was simply too beautiful and not at all like a mortal. It cause the surrounding people who looked to feel a burst of dizziness.
Su Tang was aware that these people were watching them, and feeling odd and uncomfortable at heart, he gave Ling Si a poke. “We should quickly leave. It feels strange to be looked at by so many people, almost like looking at a monkey.”
“Ah, will listen to you, little wife.” Ling Si smiled and teased but his feet nonetheless began moving faster.
In fact, he also wanted to quickly leave. His little fox was so cute that even he had not seen enough yet so how could he let others have a look?
Footnotes:
1. ba // 吧 – I explained in chapter 2 how Su Tang thought chicken to be something else and this character is the main culprit. This 吧(ba) is a modal particle.
2. bā // 巴 – The other bā that when added to 鸡(jī), which means chicken, becomes 鸡巴(jībā) which then means cock. Say chicken(鸡), but don’t add bā(巴)//ba(吧)! lol
3. eight feet tall – According to what I looked up, eight feet in ancient China is just 185cm which is like a little over 6 feet. Apparently, an adult male in ancient China had feet smaller than what they are now.
4. small milk dog // 小奶狗 // xiǎo nǎi gǒu – either he a small baby dog or its referencing the Chinese internet slang for a person who is considerate, innocent, sweet, clingy and loyal to his companion
5. cut sleeves // 断袖 // duàn xiù – euphemism for homosexuality
