“Do you mind telling me what was the reason for accepting
her invitation, without thinking twice?” I really wanted to know it.
“As I told you earlier, my father didn’t let me eat
the kind of food that I want to. I mean, he let’s us eat boiled vegetables and
bland food, because of his health consciousness.” He whined.
“So, you want to eat at a stranger's house, because you
don’t like the food you have at your home, is that it.” I asked.
“Well yes, she is a kindhearted person, I see no harm
in it. Even more, haven’t you tasted those cookies, they were delicious.” He
reasoned.
“Whatever you say, Veer.” I sighed.
I see of veer to his house, as it was in the way to my
hotel. We said our goodbyes and I began walking towards the hotel thinking only
about the lady.
“What were her intentions? Could it hold some potential
dangers, that my mind is thinking of. Or she might be truly a good person as
Veer said. Either way, we have to attend the dinner now. Or I might let him go
alone. Nah, can’t put him at any risk, that dumbass won’t be able to
differentiate between the danger and safety. And if something happens to us
nobody will know. What should I do?......” I was trying to be cautious.
“Where were you, you brat! Haven’t I told you to come
on time.” A huge man came standing in front of me outside hotel, “didn’t I tell
you to be here on time.” With a crooked look on his face, he repeated himself
again.
“I’m a half hour early, chef.” I said with a pleasant
smile on my face.
“Yeah, whatever! Now don’t just stand there looking at
my face, get in your uniform and attend the table number 7.” With a pointing
finger towards me, he said, “And, you better not make any mistake, do you
understand me, Sambar?”
“Ambar, sir” I corrected him.
“Haven’t I given you work to do, you little brat, quit
standing there correcting me and go instead, shu shu; and one more thing you
know how much I hate you, don’t you?” I might never know the reason of his
rudeness.
“Yes, chef.” With the same pleasant smile, I went in,
changed and began.
“Hey, Ambar how are you sweetie!” Sophie inquired.
Sophie, a beautiful woman and a fun-loving person, who
was a new assistant chef who joined us before a month. She was somewhere around
in her late twenties. She had a joyful nature, she used to talk politely and everybody
including me, enjoyed her company. She was also dependable.
“Right, Sophie, I should talk to her about the
invitation!” I thought.
“I’m good big sis, what about you. How are you?” I
asked.
“Can’t you tell, as frustrated as always, this chef
gives me all the cooking and just sits there, bothering us whenever he wants.
That fatso, ill add some extra pepper in his food one day.” She said, with a
smiling face. We both shared a moment of laughter and continued our work.
After sometimes; “Sis, can I ask you a favor? I need
to talk about to you something.” I asked her.
“Sure, you can. Wait, don’t tell me you want me to meet
your girlfriend. I’ll be more than happy to do that.” And she smiled.
“No, sis…” and then I told her all the story, and about
the invitation.
“I want to meet this Veer, that stupid, if he wanted,
he could’ve come to us, I would have cooked anything for him. Why that fool.” She
was a little mad at Veer, but that’s okay.
“So, was the girl pretty?” She asked.
“Why does it matter?” I requestioned.
“Okay, Ambar, what you want me to do then?” She asked me
with a serious look on her face.
“I need you to be lookout for us.” I told her.
“Sure, however it’ll cost something.” She said smiling.
“What?” I was
amazed, never thought she could’ve asked something.
“I’ll tell you when I will be in the need. Rest assure
it is nothing difficult.” She chuckled.
“Are you, both, slacking off? I swear I’ll compensate this
time with your salaries. And Sophie he is a brat not you, come on pick up the
pace, and you Sambar, what were you talking about to her?” he asked.
“Oh, it was nothing, King pin.” Said Sophie taunting him
for his belly.
“Sophie, shut your mouth and cook the order for table 3.”
He ordered her and continued, “Sambar, come to my cabin now.”
“Yes, master Ketu.” Sophie saluted him, as she was a
crew mate of a pirate.
“How many times have I told you not call me by my name
in manner.” Said Ketu.
“Come Sambar. We need to talk.” And he went to his
cabin.
“Ooo, someone is in big trouble.” Sophie mocked me.
“Sis, did I do something? Will he kick me out?” I
asked her, with a smirking face.
It was a usual thing, he would call me, ask me about my health,
and study and if I required any kind of help. And his concerns were obvious in
his cabin. But for the outside world, I don’t know why, he is the rudest man, and
inside his 8×8 cabin, he is rude but at least a concerned guardian.
“You should go, or he’ll be back, And I don’t want that.”
Sophie grumbled.
I nodded my head and went inside the cabin. He was
doing the bills, and was about to open up the registers to write down the sales.
“Come on in, take your seat. You had a test today, didn’t you? How it went?” he asked.
“It was great, chef. I did try to do better than the
last time.” I replied.
“That’s good.” Took a deep breath and said, “I
overheard, you and Sophie. Tell me if I can help you guys in any way. It is
really dangerous to go alone for only two young boys, and if they are some
fools like you are.” Said Ketu.
“Sir, it’s really fine, Sophie can be enough help. And
it is just a dinner, and that lady seems to be a good person.” I spoke.
“Are you sure about it.” He asked.
“Yes, sir, we’ll be fine.” I assured.
“Then go back to the work.” He ordered.
“Right now, Sir.” I said and left.
The day came to an end. My 4-hour shift was over, and we were about to leave. Ketu came to us and asked, “are you sure, that you don’t need
my help?” and I simply shook my head, “You both take care of yourself then, and
you are not going to be late tomorrow. Is that clear?” he said and he took off
on his old motorbike.
