Yulexi couldn't stop her tears for a lengthy period. This began to vex the other mermaids present there.
"Why did you bring her here?" Another mermaid's voice chimed in. "That vampire is very noisy."
"What did you expect me to do? Let her die?"
"Die? How?" Yulexi inquired, seemingly, her greatest issue at the moment wasn't Victoriano's love.
"You were thrown into the sea, shackled, by two wolves, if I hadn't pulled you out you would've drowned," replied Bianca, the name of the mermaid who had saved her.
"Thank you very much. Although now I'm not sure if it's better to be alive or dead." The hurt in her heart was more intense than any beating she had sustained in her life.
"Being alive is always better. You will overcome this pain."
"You never get over losing a mate."
"You don't need to worry about that anymore. Regardless, you'll never leave this place."
Yulexi cried harder.
"You're not good at comforting people."
"I'm sorry."
"What's your name?"
"I'm Bianca."
"I'm Yulexi."
"I know, we mermaids possess the power to see a person's past."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"I read about it in a legend. It seems most legends are true."
"Did you also know about the prince with two mates?"
"Yes."
"You're a fool; only you would give up your powers for love," remarked a mermaid whom Yulexi hadn't seen.
"Whose voice is that?" Yulexi questioned.
"I know someone who threw herself into the sea so her love would live his life in guilt," Bianca said, silencing the other mermaid.
"Shut up, Bianca," the other snapped. Several mermaids gradually started emerging from the sea.
"Are all of you...?" Yulexi looked on with awe.
"Women disappointed in love who threw ourselves into the sea, we're mermaids now but were once human," Bianca shared.
"That's incredible. Can all of you see the past?"
"Most of us, yes. There's five or six who can't; their powers haven't evolved."
"What about the future? Can anyone see that?" Yulexi wouldn't hesitate to inquire about her own future if it were so.
"No, the ocean goddess only allows us to see the past."
Yulexi felt let down. Yet, a sliver of hope lingered.
"Is there any way for me to leave this place?"
"If you become a mermaid you may come and go freely, but you'll never set foot on solid ground again."
"I don't want that, I need to get to dry land, to seek out my family."
"Look, the only way you'll leave as a human is by reaching the bottom of the whirlpool, finding the blue flower, and eating it," one of the mermaids stated.
"What?" Yulexi knew of that flower. But it was said that no one had ever even managed to see it, let alone touch it.
"The blue flower is a myth, don't listen to her," said Bianca, not wanting Yulexi to risk danger.
"That flower does exist, but only someone with a pure heart can find it, someone who has never killed. We killed ourselves so even if we reached it we wouldn't be able to see it. But maybe you can."
"I've never killed but my heart isn't pure, if that flower is real, I wouldn't be able to find it either," Yulexi lamented sadly.
"How can you be so sure that your heart isn't pure? I see no hate in your eyes, only sadness. I see no malice, only pain. I see no thirst for revenge, only a longing to see your loved ones. You have a purer heart than most."
"Regardless, I can't breathe underwater."— That was the greatest obstacle. Yulexi's stomach growled.
"You're hungry, aren't you?" Bianca observed.
Yulexi fainted; she hadn't eaten since the hospital, coupled with being interned for three months, and the relinquishment of her powers. It's still a mystery how she manages to speak.
Bianca cut herself with a rock.
"What are you doing?" another mermaid asked.
"I won't let her die." She dripped a few drops of her blood into Yulexi's mouth.
Half an hour later, Yuli awoke. She saw only darkness until Bianca conjured a light.
"Thank you for helping me," she said to Bianca.
"How do you know it was me?"
"You're the kindest here."
"That hurt," remarked a mermaid.
"I'll introduce you. This is Andy, Lili, Niki, Lucy, Elsy, Maru, Tilo..." she introduced them all.
Yulexi stood up with a bit of difficulty.
"Is there any way I can take a bath?"
"We are at sea, there is only saltwater."
"I never liked saltwater."
"If you had your powers, you could turn saltwater into freshwater," Andy said.
"Thanks for telling me what I already know. That's what I get for underestimating my powers. Tell me more about that flower."
Bianca recounted the story.
"Many centuries ago, the ocean goddess saw many wicked people casting others into the sea. She took pity on them and transformed them into mermaids, mermen, and oceanic creatures.
Then she planted a flower at the base of that whirlpool. She said that if anyone wished to return to dry land, they could do so. But that person had to have a pure heart and no ill intentions.
We cannot reach it, you know the reason."
"Mmm."
Yulexi dived into the sea, but when she reached the whirlpool, controlling her body became impossible. It sucked in everything it encountered. She had no choice but to swim to the surface.
"I'll never get there; that whirlpool is too strong."
"You need strength." Bianca produced some food.
Yulexi felt saliva form around her mouth.
"Thank you." She took an apple and ate it savoring its delicious taste.
"Be cautious here. It's not just us who live on this island," Bianca warned.
"Who else resides here?"
"Creatures that consume humans. They might not harm you, but I can't be certain."
"Thank you for the warning."
