Nicholas was trying to concentrate on the letter to his mother, a letter that was probably the most important document he would ever write. Everything depended upon this letter: his estates, his family's future---and his life.

But as he wrote he began to hear her. Softly at first, but growing louder. It was a woman weeping, but not weeping as from pain or even from grief but from something deeper.

He gave his attention back to the letter but he could not concentrate. The woman need something but he could not tell what. Comfort? Soothing?

No, he thought, she needed hope. The tears, the weeping, were the tears of a person who no longer had any hope.

Nicholas looked back at the paper. The woman's problems were not his. if he did not finish this letter and soon give it to the waiting messenger, his own life would be without hope.

He wrote two more line then stopped. The crying increased. It wasn't louder, but it seemed to grow in size until it filled the room.

"Lady," he wispered, "give me peace. I would give my life to help you but my life is pledged."

He picked up the pen and wrote, with one hand over his ear, trying to block out the woman's need.
