The first buffalo wanted to find food for the day on a hill not far from the forest, unfortunately the second buffalo wanted different things. He wanted to find food in the garden in the eastern part of the forest. Two other buffalo tried to break up the fight between the first buffalo and the second buffalo. However, the effort was in vain because neither of them was willing to budge. "If you don't want to come with me, let me go alone to that hill." The first buffalo decided to leave the other three friends. "What if the wolf comes?" said the third buffalo. "I'm not afraid of wolves." While holding back annoyance that his friend did not want to follow his wishes, the first buffalo went alone towards the hill. Things that are not much different are also done with the second buffalo. Annoyed with the third and fourth buffalo who also did not want to look for food in the garden, the second buffalo decided to go alone. The wolf smiled contentedly at the quarrel. He first caught up with the first buffalo and pounced on the buffalo alive. Apparently, the wolf was not full and satisfied yet, he turned to pounce on the second buffalo who was busy eating grass in the garden. By nightfall, the third and fourth buffaloes were worried about their two friends. Both agreed to look for the first buffalo and the second buffalo. The search ended in vain when the hare met the two and informed them of the misfortunes of the first buffalo and the second buffalo. "You don't have to look for them. Both have been eaten by wolves. Alkisah di hutan belantara, di antara banyaknya binatang, ada empat ekor kerbau yang bersahabat.

Pada suatu hari, dari kejauhan, serigala mengamati empat ekor kerbau tersebut saat mereka tengah mengumpulkan rumput untuk disantap. Dari kejauhan itu, serigala sangat tergoda untuk memangsa mereka satu per satu. Namun, hal itu tampak sulit jika mereka selalu bersama. Bisa saja mereka malah memberontak dan membuat serigala kehabisan tenaga.
Serigala memutuskan untuk menunggu waktu yang tepat. Dia berencana menunggu keempat kerbau itu berpisah.
Penantian serigala tidak sia-sia karena pada suatu hari keempat kerbau bertengkar. Kerbau pertama ingin mencari makanan untuk hari ini di atas bukit yang tidak jauh dari hutan, sayangnya kerbau kedua mengingkan hal yang berbeda. Ia ingin mencari makanan di kebun yang ada di bagian timur hutan.
Dua kerbau lainnya berusaha untuk melerai pertengkaran kerbau pertama dan kerbau kedua. Namun, usaha itu sia-sia karena tidak ada satupun di antara mereka yang hendak mengalah.
“Jika kalian tidak ingin ikut denganku, biar aku sendirian saja yang pergi menuju bukit itu.” Kerbau pertama memutuskan untuk meninggalkan ketiga temannya yang lain.
“Jika serigala datang bagaimana?” ucap kerbau ketiga.
“Aku tidak takut dengan serigala.” Sambil menahan kesal karena temannya tidak ingin mengikuti keinginannya, kerbau pertama perrgi sendirian ke arah bukit.
Hal yang tidak jauh berbeda juga dilakukan dengan kerbau kedua. Karena kesal dengan kerbau ketiga dan keempat yang juga tidak mau mencari makanan di kebun, kerbau kedua memutuskan untuk pergi sendiri.
Serigala tersenyum puas melihat pertengkaran tersebut. Dia terlebih dahulu menyusul kerbau pertama dan menerkam kerbau itu hidup-hidup. Ternyata, serigala belum merasa kenyang dan puas, ia beralih menerkam kerbau kedua yang tengah asik memakan rumput di kebun.
Menjelang malam hari, kerbau ketiga dan keempat mengkhawatirkan kedua sahabat mereka. Keduanyapun sepakat untuk mencari kerbau pertama dan kerbau kedua.
Pencarian itu berakhir sia-sia ketika kelinci menemui keduanya dan memberitahukan nasib malang kerbau pertama dan kerbau kedua. “Kalian tidak perlu mencari mereka. Keduanya telah dimakan oleh serigala. Aku melihat hanya tanduk mereka yang tersisa.” ujar kelinci.
Kerbau ketiga dan kerbau keempat sangat bersedih dan berjanji tidak akan meninggalkan satu sama lain.
