Ashers pov:
Fate. That’s what I decided to call it. Perhaps it was the same instant draw that Hades felt when he first saw Persephone. Or even Romeo to Juliet. All I know for certain was that she was my forever and I was hers. I’ve known that since the moment I first laid eyes on her.
Her auburn hair lay in pools on her desk while she lay hunched over reading with only a corner of the book peeking out of her hair. She was hidden in the far back corner of the class and I could only assume she had the intention of going unnoticed. I smirked to myself. Not on my watch.
I strode over to her desk and sat next to her however she didn’t even acknowledge me. I would have assumed she was too encompassed in her book to notice my presence if it wasn’t for her hand which dug deeper into her scalp as I sat down. ‘Nice try princess’ I thought to myself. I cleared my throat and tapped her shoulder. She jolted upright and blinked fast trying to act as though she hadn’t noticed me. Her face turned a soft shade of pink as if she was embarrassed by her fake jolt. I looked into the deep pools of turquoise that were her eyes. Her eyes were naturally wide and looked like she was constantly making doe eyes. “Um sorry to bother you but I have to ask. Are you a thief? Bec-” I was interrupted by her as she duly looked at me and rolled her eyes. “Let me guess. You were going to say ‘Because you stole my heart?’’ she said, cocking her eyebrow at me knowingly. I flushed a little red then gathered my composure. “N-No I was going to say. Because that looks like my pencil,” I replied pointing to her pencil. Weak I know but I had to salvage whatever pride I could. She kept her eyebrow cocked and eyed me before sighing and returning to her book.
I internally groaned at myself for trying a pickup line. She was so beautiful it wouldn’t surprise me if she got a dozen daily. After a few minutes of pretending to be deeply invested in what the teacher was saying I gave up and turned to the side of me to look at her. Her large doe eyes stared at the board with intent and I could tell she could feel my gaze but she stayed strong and refused to look at me. I tapped her shoulder gently. She redirected her gaze to mine.
“Yes?” she whispered to me ducking her head out of view of the teacher. “I was just wondering if I could know your name? I’ll give you something I exchange for it.” I did a sing-songy voice for the last part hoping she wouldn’t ignore my request. Her eyes met mine and she studied them with a skeptical look like she was trying to size me up. Finally, she relented and sighed. “Evanna. But I mostly go by either Eva or Anna. take your pick.” she said before returning her attention to the teacher. “Don’t you want to know what I'll give you in return?” I asked, raising a questioning eyebrow. She looked at me then shrugged. “I don’t really care Asher.” I was stunned and confused and I guess my face was easy to read because she laughed through her nose at my look and pointed to the paper that sat in front of me and read ‘Asher’. I turned red and could feel the color and blood fill my cheeks while she fought hard to stifle her laughter.
Once she had calmed down a bit and stopped her small laughter she looked at me with less of a distant look and more of a friendly gaze. I made eye contact with her and she inspected my eyes with her own and for some reason, it felt good. “So you said your name was Evanna, right?” I double-checked with her trying to change the subject from the laughter and glances. She nodded slightly and replied, “Yea but like I said. You can call me Eva or Anna or any other name that comes to mind. I’m used to everything at this point.” She shrugged. I could feel a smirk tug lightly at the corner of my lips as I moved my arm onto my desk to gently rest my head in it still looking at her. “Perfect, so then you won’t mind when I call you princess? Or maybe Angel? Or how about Baby girl?” I stopped when her face turned bright red and she turned away from me. Baby girl it is. I smirked and turned to the front of the class using my peripheral vision to eye her every now and then.
We continued like that for about two weeks. Her making sarcastic remarks and challenging my pride and me making a sly retorts back making her blush or get flustered and shy away from the fight. After two weeks I asked her on a date. She was quick to turn me down and tried to come up with excuses to remain friends but I wouldn’t let her off. She finally accepted my request and we started dating. We went slow. It was beautiful before I ruined it. We had been together for about 3 weeks by Valentine’s Day and we were happy. She gave me this cologne that complimented me so well. I gave her a locket with a picture of us in it to wear close to her heart as well as a promise that I wouldn’t leave her. I knew about her situation with her dad and promised I wouldn’t run away. I would have stayed true to that promise too if it wasn’t for that one night that destroyed everything.
