chapter one

I WOKE UP screaming and breathing erratically as I looked around my room.

It was just a dream..an eerily vivid nightmare.

Willing myself to calm down, I stared at the reflection of my pale face in it.

I look like I just saw a ghost, I thought as I stared at the mirror beside my bed.

Shaking my head at my absurd thought, I climbed off the bed and made my way to the mirror.

Touching my reflection, I frowned as I suddenly felt something pass by me,something like a shadow.

"W-who's there?"

No one answered.. Huh. I must have imagined that.

I thought ,man that dream was pretty creepy, so much that I'm imagining things now.

However,I couldn't shake out the feeling that..the girl in my dream was familiar.

I'm watching too much fantasy movies these days to get those dreams...

Pressing at my temples that has currently started to throb violently,I lied back down in hopes of getting some sleep.

However, I wasn't so lucky. After tossing and turning around for half an hour,I decided to give up.

Sighing, I made my way to the kitchen to grab myself a cup of coffee.

"Huh. So mom's out with the friends now, aye?"

I muttered under my breath as I noticed the stick in note by the kitchen counter that says.

Hey babe, I'm going out with aunt Michelle, we're going to fishing so probably will be late.

P.S. Mama loves you XOXO

I grinned, you would think a mother of a 18 year old girl would knit sweaters at home with a cat in her lap and watch TV melodrama.

However, the reality is quite the different.

Diane Jones goes bungee jumping from the mountains in her vacation and goes fishing in the weekends.

After brewing a steaming pot of coffee,I stared at the ceiling.

Being a single mother must be hard on her, specially for raising such a troublemaker child but I I gotta admit, nobody knows how to raise her child better than miss Diane.

And just like that I stared at the clock to see it's only past five o'clock. Huh.

I better go run a few metres today, lately I've been munching on too much greasy stuff and got a few good pounds on me.

Cringing at the thought of mom getting to know that, and the actions she would take I made a long sigh.

Being the daughter of a gym trainer ain't no easy thing, I tell ya..

"Well..I better get going now."

_________

After locking my door,I put on my earphones and set out for the long, painful run.

I've always been a couch potato,so you know how good I am at the athletics.

I passed by the fat couple that took their pug out for peeing and the willow tree by the park under which we used to hold picnics when I was a kid.

It's always been me and my mum. I don't know why, but mom doesn't like to talk about my biological father.

It's been a taboo for us since my childhood. Naturally, as a kid I wanted to know who my father is,how he looks like.

But whenever I used to ask anything related to dad,mom used to lock herself up in her study and drink a bottle of red wine.

So,after I realised that mentioning him makes her sad,I learnt to never, under in no circumstances, ever talk about dad.

That didn't make me stop my investigation of finding some source of dad though, I don't know why I did it but I wanted to know that he exists.

That he is a living human too, somewhere in this world,he has his own existence as well.

But of course, after months of searching every corner, every shelf and whatnot, I still got nothing on me.

It's like he doesn't exist.

I huffed, either my mom is very smart to erase every single belonging of dad, or she never had one.

I came back with a jolt and suddenly, like the moron I am,and bumped into someone.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry sir,are you okay?I didn't notice where I was..going."

I couldn't even complete my apology before the hooded man in front me stepped back as if I've zapped him,and made a run for his life.

Huh. What's that all about?

No reply whatsoever, that's fine. But it wasn't like I am some monster..

Do I look that ugly?

Making a face at the grey hooded figure retreating at the end of the alley,I thought, too bad I didn't see his face. Otherwise, I'd love to give him a piece of my mind.

Weirdo.

"What are you doing standing in middle of the road, huh?"

I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard the voice.

Calm down,Evie. It's just your annoying neighbour.

"Don't scare me like that, you idiot! I almost died, yknow." Punching Caleb in the ribs,I grinned when he winced.

"You're such a drama queen,Evie." Rubbing at his sides,he rolled on the balls of his feet, the way he usually does when he has something to say.

I rolled my eyes at him.

Some things never change, do they?

Even after growing up,he is still the shy boy who used to follow me around all day,and time has never put a dent in our friendship.

My best friend is just as shy and calm as the first time I met him.

"Spill it dude." Putting my arm around his shoulder I smirked, "I know you wanna."

He made a face at me,but did start spilling.

He knows better.

"I was just wondering..if you were going to go to the party Caroline is throwing today. She invited me,but I don't wanna go there alone."

"But she didn't invite me" I grinned, somebody's getting famous lately.

I'm not going to lie, Caleb is hot. With his blue eyes, blonde hair and athletic body, he sure is a lady killer.

I'm not surprised that he is invited to literally everywhere, thanks to his look and meek attitude.

"And you want me to be your social shield? You evil, evil boy!"

With that,I messed up his hair(which he hates) and ran for my life.

"You son of...you just wait,Evelyn Jones!"
